Claims
- 1. An infusion pump for delivering intravenous fluid from a variable geometry intravenous bag to a patient through a tube, the infusion pump comprising:
- a receptacle for containing the bag;
- a moveable member for contacting a surface of the bag, the moveable member configured to apply a force to the bag surface to cause the intravenous fluid to flow out of the bag and into the tube;
- drive means for moving the moveable member;
- pressure sensing means for sensing the pressure of the fluid within the bag; and,
- valve means associated with the tube for reversibly restricting fluid flow through the tube, the valve means communicating with the pressure sensing means and being actuated between an open position and a closed position as a result of changes in the pressure of the fluid within the bag as detected by the sensing means.
- 2. The invention of claim 1, wherein the receptacle is at least in part defined by a first wall and an opposing second wall.
- 3. The invention of claim 2, wherein the pressure sensing means includes a transducer which is mounted on a wall of the receptacle.
- 4. The invention of claim 2, wherein the first and second walls define an inverted V-shaped receptacle.
- 5. The invention of claim 4, wherein the bag is suspended vertically within the receptacle.
- 6. The invention of claim 1, further comprising control means communicating between the pressure sensing means and the valve means for actuating the valve means between the open position and the closed position in response to changes in the pressure of the fluid in the reservoir.
- 7. The invention of claim 6, wherein the valve means is actuated to an open position from a closed position when the pressure of the fluid within the reservoir increases to above a first predetermined value and from an open position to a closed position when the pressure falls below a second predetermined value.
- 8. The invention of claim 7, wherein the first predetermined value is higher than the second predetermined value.
- 9. The invention of claim 8, wherein the first predetermined value is about 2.1 psi.
- 10. The invention of claim 9, wherein the second predetermined value is about 2.0 psi.
- 11. An infusion pump for delivering an intravenous fluid from a variable geometry reservoir to a patient, the pump comprising:
- a housing;
- an inverted V-shaped chamber within the housing capable of containing the reservoir, the chamber being at least partially defined by a first wall connected pivotally relative to an opposing second wall such that the volume of the chamber may be varied by movement of the first wall with respect to the second wall;
- first wall movement means located within the housing for moving the first wall relative to the second wall, the first wall capable of compressing a reservoir contained within the chamber;
- electronic control means within the housing to control the movement of the first wall toward the second wall, the control means communicating with the first wall movement means, the control means actuating the first wall movement according to determinations of how first wall movement will effect the reduction in reservoir volume; and,
- the control means including pressure sensing means for sensing the pressure of the fluid within the bag.
- 12. The infusion pump of claim 11, wherein the variable geometry reservoir is a standard IV bag.
- 13. The infusion pump of claim 11, further comprising a power source and wherein the power source is a battery or series of batteries.
