Claims
- 1. A composition comprising:
a) a spermicidal effective amount of a vanadium (IV) complex of Formula I: 14 wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 are the same or different and are independently selected from H, halo, OH2, O3SCF3, N3, CN, OCN, SCN, SeCN, NO2, C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy and aryl; n is 0 or 1; and R5 and R6 are the same or different and are either monodentate ligands or R5 and R6 together comprise a bidentate ligand, with the provisio that
i) when n=0 and R5 and R6 are monodentate ligands of unsubstituted cyclopentadienyl, R1, R2, R3, and R4 are not each H and are not each Cl, ii) when n=1 and R1, R2, R3, and R4 are each H, R5 and R6 are not bidentate ligands of the formula OH, OH2, 15 and iii) when n=1 and R1, R2, R3 and R4 are each Cl, R5 and R6 are not 16 or 3-tert-butyl; b) a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier; and c) a diluent or vehicle.
- 2. The composition of claim 1, wherein R5 and R6 together comprise a bidentate ligand, the bidentate ligand selected from the group consisting of N,N′; N,O; and O,O′ bidentate ligands.
- 3. The composition of claim 2, wherein the bidentate ligand comprises one or more aromatic rings.
- 4. The composition of claim 3, wherein the bidentate ligand is selected from the group consisting of substituted or un-substituted bipyridyl, bridged bipyridyl, and acetophenone bidentate ligands.
- 5. The composition of claim 4, wherein the bridged bidentate ligand is phenanthroline.
- 6. The composition of claim 1, wherein R5 and R6 comprise monodentate ligands.
- 7. The composition of claim 6, wherein at least one of the monodentate ligands comprise one or more aromatic rings.
- 8. The composition of claim 7, wherein at least one of the monodentate ligands is a substituted or un-substituted cyclopentadienyl ligand.
- 9. The composition of claim 1, wherein R5 and R6 are each unsubstituted cyclopentadienyl, or substituted cyclopentadieneyl with one or more substituents selected from aryl, C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy, halo, OH2, O3SCF3, N3, CN, OCN, SCN, SeCN, NO2
- 10. The composition of claim 1 or 9, wherein one or more of R1, R2, R3 and R4 are H, halo, or C1-C4 alkyl.
- 11. The composition of claim 1 or 9, wherein the vanadium (IV) complex is selected from the group consisting of Cp2V(dbcat), Cp2V(mbcat), and Cp2V(dpcat).
- 12. The composition of claim 11, wherein the vanadium (IV) complex is Cp2V(mbcat) or Cp2V(dpcat).
- 13. The composition of claim 1, wherein R5 and R6 are

- 17. A method for inhibiting the motility of a sperm cell comprising contacting the sperm cell with a spermicidal effective amount of an vanadium (IV) comprising a substituted or un-substituted catecholate ligand.
- 18. The method of claim 17, wherein the vanadium (IV) complex is of Formula I

- 20. The method of claim 17, wherein R5 and R6 together comprise a bidentate ligand, the bidentate ligand selected from the group consisting of N,N′; N,O; and O,O′ bidentate ligands.
- 21. The method of claim 20, wherein the bidentate ligand is selected from the group consisting of substituted or un-substituted bipyridyl, bridged bipyridyl, and acetophenone bidentate ligands.
- 22. The method of claim 21, wherein the bridged bipyridyl bidentate ligand is phenanthroline.
- 23. The method of claim 17, wherein R5 and R6 comprise monodentate ligands.
- 24. The method of claim 23, wherein at least one of the monodentate ligands is a substituted or un-substituted cyclopentadienyl ligand.
- 25. The method of claim 17, wherein R5 and R6 are each unsubstituted cyclopentadienyl, or substituted cyclopentadienyl with one or more substituents selected from aryl, C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy, halo, OH2, O3SCF3, N3, CN, OCN, SCN, SeCN, NO2
- 26. The method of claim 25, wherein one or more of R1, R2, R3 and R4 are C1-C4 alkyl.
- 27. The method of claim 26, wherein the vanadium (IV) complex is selected from the group consisting of Cp2V(dbcat), Cp2V(mbcat), and Cp2V(dpcat).
- 28. The method of claim 27, wherein the vanadium (IV) complex is Cp2V(mbcat) or Cp2V(dpcat).
