Claims
- 1. A power unit for mounting a work implement comprising:
a frame supported for movement over the ground by a pair of wheels; an engine supported on said frame to provide a source of rotational power for operating said work implement, said engine having an power output shaft extending in a generally vertical orientation; an implement mounting mechanism pivotally supported from said frame for pivotal movement about a generally vertical axis of rotation, said implement mounting mechanism being adapted for connection of said work implement to permit said work implement to pivotally move relative to said frame about said axis of rotation.
- 2. The power unit of claim 1 further comprising:
a drive mechanism interconnecting said power output shaft and said work implement, said axis of rotation coinciding with said power output shaft so that said work implement can pivot about said axis of rotation without disrupting the transfer of rotational power from said engine power output shaft.
- 3. The power unit of claim 2 wherein said implement is detachable from said implement mounting mechanism to permit different implements to be connected to said power unit.
- 4. The power unit of claim 3 further comprising:
a locking mechanism supported from said frame and engaging said implement mounting mechanism to control the pivotal movement of said implement mounting mechanism about said axis of rotation.
- 5. The power unit of claim 4 wherein said implement mounting mechanism includes a support arm extending orthogonally to said axis of rotation, said support arm being adapted for connection to said work implement.
- 6. The power unit of claim 5 wherein said locking mechanism comprises:
a bracket formed with a plurality of slots therein arranged to be engageable with a key affixed to said support arm, the engagement of said bracket with said key preventing said support arm from pivoting about said axis of rotation.
- 7. The power unit of claim 6 wherein said bracket is pivotally mounted on said frame for movement between a raised inoperative position and a lowered locking position in which said bracket is engaged with said key, said bracket being biased by a spring into said lowered locking position.
- 8. The power unit of claim 7 wherein said bracket is arcuate with a center of curvature coinciding generally with said axis of rotation.
- 9. The power unit of claim 7 wherein said work implement is movably mounted on said support arm for movement toward and away from said frame, said implement mounting mechanism further including fasteners for fixing the position of said work implement relative to said support arm.
- 10. The power unit of claim 9 wherein said drive mechanism includes a drive belt entrained around a drive pulley mounted on said engine output shaft and a driven pulley mounted on said work implement, the tension in said drive belt being maintained through the positional relationship of said work implement relative to said support arm.
- 11. The power unit of claim 1 wherein said implement mounting mechanism is positionable in a longitudinally extending position corresponding to the direction of travel, said implement mounting mechanism being movable to both sides of said longitudinally extending position to permit said work implement to move laterally relative to said power unit.
- 12. The power unit of claim 11 wherein said power unit is a walk-behind version, said frame terminating rearwardly in a pair of handle bars for manipulation by an operator.
- 13. A powered landscape edging apparatus comprising:
a power unit having a frame supported for movement over the ground by a pair of wheels and an engine providing a source of rotational power; an implement mounting mechanism pivotally supported by said frame for pivotal movement about a generally vertical axis of rotation, said implement mounting mechanism including a support arm extending generally orthogonally to said axis of rotation; an edging implement connected to said support arm to be pivotally movable therewith, said edging implement including a disk member rotatably mounted on a mounting arm configured to position said disk member adjacent one of said wheels; and a drive mechanism operatively interconnecting said engine and said disk member to power the rotation of said disk member.
- 14. The landscape edging apparatus of claim 13 wherein said edging apparatus includes a mounting member engagable with said support arm to detachably mount said edging implement on said power unit.
- 15. The landscape edging apparatus of claim 14 wherein said mounting arm includes a transverse portion extending from said mounting member to a longitudinal portion, said longitudinal portion extending rearwardly from said transverse portion to position said disk member outboard of said one wheel.
- 16. The landscape edging apparatus of claim 15 wherein said longitudinal portion includes:
a yoke defining a generally transversely extending pivot axis for said longitudinal portion to permit a vertical movement of said disk member relative to said transverse portion of said mounting arm.
- 17. The landscape edging apparatus of claim 16 wherein said drive mechanism comprises:
a gearbox mounted on said mounting arm and having a power input shaft and a power output shaft; a first drive belt transferring rotational power from said engine to said power input shaft of said gearbox; and a second drive belt transferring rotational power from said power output shaft of said gearbox to said disk member, said transverse pivot axis defined by said yoke coinciding with said power output shaft so that tension in said second drive belt would not be affected by the vertical movement of said disk member about said transverse pivot axis.
- 18. The landscape edging apparatus of claim 17 wherein tension in said first drive belt member is adjusted through a positional movement of said mounting member relative to said support arm, thereby changing the distance between said gearbox power input shaft and said engine, said longitudinal portion of said mounting arm being formed in two pieces with one piece mounting said disk member and being positionally movable relative to said the other piece, said tension in said second drive belt being adjusted through the movement of said one piece relative to the other piece thereby changing the distance between said disk member and said power output shaft of said gearbox.
- 19. The landscape edging apparatus of claim 13 wherein the pivotal movement of said edging implement about said axis of rotation changes the orientation of said disk member relative to the ground such that an angle at which said disk member engages the ground to form a trough therein varies correspondingly to the pivoted position of said implement mounting mechanism, the greater the angle at which said disk member engages the ground the wider the formed trough will be.
- 20. The landscape edging apparatus of claim 19 wherein said engine has a power output shaft, said axis of rotation coinciding with said engine power output shaft.
- 21. The landscape edging apparatus of claim 20 further comprising:
a locking mechanism supported by said frame and selectively engaging said implement mounting mechanism to control the pivotal movement thereof about said axis of rotation.
- 22. The landscape edging apparatus of claim 21 wherein said locking mechanism comprises:
a bracket pivotally supported on said frame, said bracket including a plurality of slots formed therein; a key mounted on said support arm for engagement with said bracket, said key being restrained with a selected one of said slots to fix the pivoted position of said support arm about said axis of rotation; and a spring interengaging said bracket and said frame to urge said bracket into engagement with said key.
- 23. The landscape edging apparatus of claim 22 wherein said bracket is arcuate with a center of curvature generally coinciding with said axis of rotation.
- 24. The landscape edging apparatus of claim 23 wherein said power unit is a walk-behind version with said frame terminating rearwardly in a pair of handle bars for manipulation by an operator.
- 25. A powered walk-behind apparatus comprising:
a power unit having a frame supported for movement over the ground by a pair of wheels and an engine providing a source of rotational power; an implement mounting mechanism pivotally supported by said frame for pivotal movement about a generally vertical axis of rotation, said implement mounting mechanism including a support arm extending generally orthogonally to said axis of rotation; a detachable implement connected to said support arm to be pivotally movable therewith relative to said power unit, said implement including at least one driven component; and a drive mechanism operatively interconnecting said engine and said implement to power the rotation of said driven component.
- 26. The powered walk-behind apparatus of claim 25 wherein said vertical axis of rotation of said implement mounting mechanism generally coincides with a power output shaft of said engine, said drive mechanism being operably connected to said power output shaft.
- 27. The powered walk-behind apparatus of claim 26 wherein said detachable implement is a wheeled implement having wheels rotatably supported on a fixed axis, steering of the connected wheeled implement and power unit being effected through an articulation of said wheeled implement relative to said power unit by pivoting said implement mounting mechanism about said vertical axis of rotation.
- 28. The powered walk-behind apparatus of claim 27 wherein said wheeled implement includes a powered component driven from a secondary drive mechanism operably powered from said drive mechanism transferring operational power from said power unit.
- 29. The powered walk-behind apparatus of claim 28 further comprising:
a locking mechanism supported from said frame and engaging said implement mounting mechanism to control the pivotal movement of said implement mounting mechanism about said vertical axis of rotation.
- 30. The powered walk-behind apparatus of claim 29 wherein said locking mechanism comprises:
a bracket formed with a plurality of slots therein arranged to be engageable with a key affixed to said support arm, the engagement of said bracket with said key preventing said support arm from pivoting about said axis of rotation.
- 31. The powered walk-behind apparatus of claim 26 wherein said detachable implement is mounted on said support arm for lateral pivotal movement about said vertical axis of rotation relative to said power unit.
- 32. The powered walk-behind apparatus of claim 31 wherein said detachable implement is a landscape edging apparatus having a powered rotatable disk for cutting a trough around landscape beds.
- 33. The powered walk-behind apparatus of claim 31 wherein said detachable implement is a powered mower.
