Claims
- 1. A method of preparing a print job containing variable data comprising the steps of:
providing a variable data print job that defines layout and product intent; identifying a plurality of groups of characteristics having elements pertaining to layout and product intent; and forming a plurality of production ready print jobs based on said groups of characteristics.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the providing step further comprises providing said variable data print job as a plurality of Instance Documents each having a plurality of page definitions.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the step of identifying said group of common characteristics further comprises identifying a set of parameters for each of said groups that it is related to workflow.
- 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the step of forming said production ready print jobs based on said set of parameters allows for efficient workflow production.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of identifying further comprises matching elements from layout and product intent to form said group of characteristics.
- 6. The method of claim 5, wherein the step of forming further comprises forming said plurality of production ready print jobs such that each of said production ready print jobs is a Family defined by elements of layout and product intent.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of identifying further comprises employing production requirements as elements of product intent.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the step of identifying further comprises as production requirements, one of the following: common media selection; common binding style; common page sizes; common number of pages; common number of copies; common pages exceeding imaging area; common page orientation; common meta-data; or common page layout.
- 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the providing step provides said variable data print job as a plurality of Instance Documents, the identifying step identifies said characteristics from said Instance Documents, and said forming step matches elements pertaining to layout and product intent within each of said Instance Documents to arrive at said plurality of production ready print jobs.
- 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the forming step further comprises the steps of:
determining if any of said Instance Documents are not within any of said groups; creating at least one new group using variants from Instance Documents as characteristics; and placing Instance Documents identified with matching characteristics by the determining step into said new group.
- 11. The method of claim 1, wherein the forming step further comprises the steps of:
determining if a portion of said print job is not contained within said plurality of groups; identifying at least one set of variant characteristics within said portion; and grouping said portion in accordance with said set of variant characteristics.
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the step of grouping further comprises; repeating the steps of identifying and grouping until all portions of said print job are identified with a group.
- 13. A variable data printing (VDP) system comprising:
a computational element within said system that is operatively connected to receive a VDP Job file defined by a plurality of Instance Documents in terms of layout and product intent; an interpreter associated with said computational element that can read layout and product intent within said Instance Documents; a user interface to said system that is capable of displaying data related to layout and product intent, said user interface allowing user selection of a plurality of sets of variants related to layout and product intent; and an organizing device within said computational element that takes user selection of said sets of variants and forms a plurality of groups.
- 14. The system of claim 13, wherein said organizing device matches said sets of variants with each of said Instance Documents having corresponding variants.
- 15. The system of claim 13, further comprising:
a mechanism within said organizing device that identifies if any of said Instance Documents are not included within one of said groups; a new group creation device that creates at least one additional group from an additional set of variants chosen from those of said Instance Documents that are not included within one of said groups; and an association routine that places those of said Instance Documents not included within one of said groups into said additional group.
- 16. The system of claim 15, wherein said new group creation device and said association routine operate on those of said Instance Documents that are not included within one of said groups until each of said Instance Documents that are not included within one of said groups are placed into one of said additional groups.
- 17. The system of claim 13, wherein each of said groups is a production ready print job.
- 18. The system of claim 17, wherein each of said groups is determined based on a set of common characteristics, said set of common characteristics being related to workflow.
- 19. The system of claim 18, wherein said set of common characteristics related to workflow comprises one of the following: common media; common binding style; common page sizes; common number of pages; common number of copies; common pages exceeding imaging area; common page orientation; common meta-data; or common page layout.
- 20. The system of claim 13, wherein the variants within said Instance Documents are selected from one of the following: page count; media type; number of copies; occurrence of pages imaging area exceeded; meta-data; page layout; page orientation and finishing.
