Claims
- 1. A tablet dispenser for dispensing a regimen of pills in a designated sequence, comprising:
- as a first element, a flat support having a tablet dispensing aperture, an encircling wall portion defining a cup-like interior, and an axis of rotation;
- as a second element, a rotatable knob having indicators of periodicity, rotatable means for connecting to the flat support for movement about the axis of rotation, and means for ratchet advancement;
- as a third element, a tablet package for containing the tablets of the regimen in individual collapsible pockets with frangible lidding, the pockets arrayed circularly about a bore to dispense from the aperture when rotated about the axis of rotation, the tablet package having second rotatable means for connecting to the rotatable knob when extended through the bore; and
- as a fourth element, means for preventing the loading of the tablet package onto the flat support except in one predetermined orientation.
- 2. The tablet dispenser of claim 1 wherein the means for preventing misoriented loading comprises a plurality of ledges cantilevered from the encircling wall portion, the ledges matched to complementary cut-aways in the tablet package for bypass in only one orientation, the tablet package having the property of stiffness provided by means for stiffening thereby to prevent forceable loading when misoriented.
- 3. The tablet dispenser of claim 2 wherein the means for stiffening is provided by a forming of the tablet package to provide a vertical element which resists bending.
- 4. The tablet dispenser of claim 3 wherein the vertical element is one or more essentially continuous circular ribs.
- 5. The tablet dispenser of claim 3 wherein the vertical element is an edge-roll forming a tubular structure at the periphery.
- 6. The tablet dispenser of claim 1 wherein the second means for connecting is a plurality of complementing lugs and recesses arranged between the boundry of the bore and the rotatable knob such that the rotatable knob is permitted any pre-orientation in registry with the means for ratchet advancement.
- 7. A tablet dispenser for dispensing a regimen of pills in a designated sequence, comprising:
- as a first element, a flat support having a single tablet dispensing aperture therein and an encircling wall portion thereon defining a cup-like interior;
- as a second element, a pivot connected to the center of the flat support defining an axis;
- as a third element, a rotatable knob having a top surface with indicators of periodicity marked thereon in correspondence with the tablets, means for gripping thereby to apply rotary force, and a bore in the center sized for encircling the pivot;
- as a fourth element, first connecting means for rotatably connecting the rotatable knob coaxially to the flat support;
- as a fifth element, means for intermittent unidirectional advancement of the knob about the axis with registry corresponding to the aperture and the indicators of periodicity;
- as a sixth element, a tablet package comprising a housing having a ductile periphery and containing the tablets in a plurality of frangibly lidded collapsible tablet pockets arranged circularly about the package at a radial distance corresponding to the distance of the aperture from the axis, the housing having a bore in the center sized for encircling the rotatable knob;
- as a seventh element, means for orienting the tablet package to the flat support such that the first tablet is located over the aperature in such a way that misorientation of the tablet package to the flat support is prevented; and
- as an eighth element, second means for connecting the tablet package to the rotatable knob upon loading onto the flat support for any initial setting of the knob such that rotary force applied to the knob is translated to the tablet package thereby providing the manner in which the tablet package is advanced, the applied force causing each tablet of the regimen to be presented in the designated order and in accompanyment with the corresponding indicator of periodicity to the aperture, with registration thereonto provided by the intermittent unidirectional advancement means, for the purpose of dispensing a single tablet at a time from the tablet dispenser, the dispensing taking place by collapsing the collapsible tablet pocket positioned thereto and urging the tablet through the frangible lidding into and through the aperture.
- 8. The tablet dispenser of claim 7 further comprising means for indicating the location of the aperture visible during and after loading of the tablet package thereby providing a fixed registry point.
- 9. The tablet dispenser of claim 8 wherein the retaining means comprises a plurality of ledges extending inwardly from the encircling wall portion of the flat support to provide underclearance space, the ledges matched to complementary cut-aways on the periphery of the tablet package thereby providing unique orientation during assembly, the ledges further overlaping the tablet package periphery for each position of the intermittent unidirectional advancement means other than the initial position.
- 10. The tablet dispenser of claim 7 further comprising means for retaining the tablet package on the flat support and in continuous connection with the rotatable knob.
- 11. The tablet dispenser of claim 7 further comprising a cover which encloses the tablet dispenser.
- 12. The tablet dispenser of claim 11 wherein the the cover is hinged to the flat support and secured in a closed position by means for latching.
- 13. The tablet dispenser of claim 7 wherein the pivot comprises a stationary flat surface elevated above the flat support by means for supporting which projects through a through-bore of the rotatable knob after assembly thereto.
- 14. The tablet dispenser of claim 13 wherein the means for supporting comprises a stalk having means for orienting the stationary flat surface of the pivot to the flat support, and thereby to the means for indicating, and further having means for fastening the stalk rigidly to the flat support.
- 15. The tablet dispenser of claim 14 wherein the means for fastening comprises a cylindrical wall portion attached to the flat support at its center and contained within the bore of the rotatable knob when assembled thereto, for receiving the pivot stalk with friction fit to the interior surface of the cylindrical wall.
- 16. The tablet dispenser of claim 15 wherein the means for orienting the stalk comprises a plurality of radial vanes extending inward from the cylindrical wall portion which nest within complementary slots in the base of the stalk when assembled thereto.
- 17. The tablet dispenser of claim 14 wherein the first connecting means comprises an overlap of a bottom surface to the stationary flat surface of the pivot and a plurality of clockwise-tending spring pawls based at the bottom of a second interior cylindrical wall serving to space the spring pawls beneath the inner edge of the top surface of the rotatable knob, thereby forming a recess, the second interior cylindrical wall encircling the pivot stationary flat surface interposed in the recess and positioned relative thereto in assembly by an essentially cylindrical exterior wall elevating the top surface to a point of contact between the spring pawls and the pivot stationary flat surface when bottomed on the flat support.
- 18. The tablet dispenser of claim 17 wherein the means for intermittent unidirectional advancement of the rotatable knob comprises the plurality of clockwise-tending spring pawls cantilevered for an upward bias and arrayed to match a circular clockwise-tending ratchet track formed into the stationary flat surface bottom surface of the pivot, with ridge and recess geometry of a conventional design, and in registry with the indicators of periodicity and the means for indicating, the interaction of components such that the spring pawls are urged downward by the rotation of the ratchet track over sliding face surfaces of the spring pawls, the spring pawls subsequently clearing the ridges and springing back into the recesses of the ratchet track thus simultaneously interrupting the rotation, positively locating the rotatable knob, and locking against counterclockwise thrust through interference of abutting face surfaces of the spring pawls and ratchet track ridges.
- 19. The tablet dispenser of claim 18 wherein the method for assembling the flat support, the rotatable knob, and the pivot comprises the steps of placing the rotatable knob over the center of the flat support, orienting the pivot to the flat support with the means for orienting the pivot, and connecting the pivot to the flat support with the means for fastening the stalk after having coaxially inserted the pivot stationary flat surface into the recess formed by the second interior cylindrical wall of the rotatable knob thereby establishing overlap of the spring pawls and interposion of the spring pawls and ratchet track for cooperation therebetween.
- 20. The tablet dispenser of claim 13 wherein the indicating means comprises a mark placed on the stationary flat surface of the pivot at the aperture position thereby facilitating visual alignment with the indicator of periodicity corresponding to the aperture position.
- 21. The tablet dispenser of claim 7 wherein the means for orienting the tablet package comprises a plurality of ledges extending inwardly from the encircling wall portion of the flat support coupled with complementary cut-aways on the periphery of the tablet package, the ledges having underclearance for the rotation of the tablet package, the ledges also having sufficient separation so as to frustrate loading of the tablet package by angling the periphery underneath the ledges without proper alignment with the cut-aways, the periphery having the property of stiffness provided by means for stiffening thereby to prevent forceable loading of the tablet package without alignment of the ledges and cut-aways, the proper alignment of features permitting bypass and consequential receipt of the tablet package onto the flat support, the bypass of ledges and cut-aways occurring in no other than the preferred tablet orientation as a result of means for uniquely matching ledge and cut-away pairs.
- 22. The tablet dispenser of claim 21 wherein the means for stiffening comprises an edge-roll of the periphery of the tablet package thereby forming an essentially tubular rim to provide structure which resists bending.
- 23. The tablet dispenser of claim 21 wherein the means for uniquely matching comprises differing shapes for the ledge and cut-away pairs such that only one orientation results in a match.
- 24. The tablet dispenser of claim 21 wherein the means for uniquely matching comprises differing sizes for the ledge and cut-away pairs such that only one orientation results in a match.
- 25. The tablet dispenser of claim 21 wherein the means for uniquely matching comprises an asymmetrical spatial array of pairs such that only one orientation results in a match.
- 26. The tablet dispenser of claim 7 wherein the used-up tablet package is removed and replenished with a fresh tablet package thereby providing for a reusable dispenser, extendable in use through multiple refill replenishments.
- 27. The tablet dispenser of claim 7 wherein the indicators of periodicity are days of the week.
- 28. The tablet dispenser of claim 17 wherein the method for loading with selection of a preferred starting day comprises the steps of removing the previously-loaded tablet dispenser, rotating the rotatable knob until the desired day is aligned with the indicating means and assembling the tablet package with registry of the designated first tablet to the desired day.
- 29. The tablet dispenser of claim 7 wherein the means for gripping comprises an edge formed by the intersection of the top surface with an essentially cylindrical exterior wall which elevates the edge to an accessible height.
- 30. A tablet dispenser for dispensing a regimen of pills in a designated sequence, comprising:,
- as a first element, a flat support having a tablet dispensing aperture, an encircling wall portion defining a cup-like interior, and an axis of rotation;
- as a second element, a rotatable knob having indicators of periodicity, rotatable means for connecting to the flat support for movement about the axis of rotation, and means for ratchet advancement;
- as a third element, a tablet package for containing the tablets of the regimen in individual collapsible pockets with frangible lidding, the pockets arrayed circularly about a bore to dispense from the aperture when rotated about the axis of rotation, the tablet package having second rotatable means for connecting to the rotatable knob when extended through the bore, the tablet package further having a stiffened periphery formed by rolling the edge into a tublar structure; and
- as a fourth element, means for preventing the loading of the tablet package, interactive with the stiffened periphery, onto the flat support except in one predetermined orientation.
