- 769. A variable stride exercise apparatus, comprising:
a frame; a crank system coupled to the frame, wherein the crank system comprises a left crank roller and a right crank roller; a left arm link coupled to the frame; a right arm link coupled to the frame; a left foot member configured to travel in multiple paths, wherein the left foot member is coupled to the left arm link and coupled to the crank system through a left cam device, wherein the left crank roller is located below the left foot member such that at least a portion of a user's foot passes above the left crank roller during use of the apparatus, and wherein the left foot member and the left arm link are configured such that the user of the apparatus, by varying the user's stride, can thereby selectively vary a path of the left foot member; and a right foot member configured to travel in multiple paths, wherein the right foot member is coupled to the right arm link and coupled to the crank system through a right cam device, wherein the right crank roller is located below the right foot member such that at least a portion of the user's foot passes above the right crank roller during use of the apparatus, and wherein the right foot member and the right arm link are configured such that the user of the apparatus, by varying the user's stride, can thereby selectively vary a path of the right foot member; wherein the left foot member and the right foot member are cross coupled so that the left foot member moves in opposition to the right foot member; wherein the apparatus is configured such that the feet of the user can travel in a substantially closed path during use of the apparatus; and wherein the apparatus is configured such that at least a portion of the apparatus remains substantially stationary during use.
- 770. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein the substantially closed path comprises a substantially elliptical path.
- 771. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein the substantially closed path comprises an orbital path.
- 772. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein the apparatus is configured such that the feet of the user can also travel in a substantially curvilinear path during use of the apparatus.
- 773. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein the foot members and the arm links are configured such that the user's stride controls the path of the foot members.
- 774. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein the foot members and the arm links are configured such that the user of the apparatus, by varying the user's stride, can thereby selectively vary a path length of the foot members.
- 775. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein the apparatus has a maximum stride length that is at least about 40% of an overall length of the apparatus while stationary.
- 776. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein the left arm link and the right arm link are cross coupled so that the left foot member and the right foot member are cross coupled.
- 777. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein the arm links are pivotally coupled to the frame.
- 778. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein the left arm link is directly attached to the left foot member, and wherein the right arm link is directly attached to the right foot member.
- 779. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein the foot members are pivotally coupled to the arm links.
- 780. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein the arm links are coupled to the foot members through one or more links.
- 781. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein the foot members are coupled to the crank system through the cam devices, and wherein a surface of at least one of the cam devices is configured to move relative to at least one of the crank rollers during use.
- 782. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein at least one of the cam devices comprises a portion of at least one foot member.
- 783. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein the cam devices are directly attached to the foot members.
- 784. The apparatus of claim 769, further comprising a left footpad coupled to the left foot member and a right footpad coupled to the right foot member.
- 785. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein the left foot member comprises a left footpad, and wherein the right foot member comprises a right footpad.
- 786. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein the crank system comprises a pulley.
- 787. The apparatus of claim 786, wherein the crank system comprises a left crank member and a right crank member coupled to the pulley, and wherein the left crank member is coupled to the left crank roller and the right crank member is coupled to the right crank roller.
- 788. The apparatus of claim 769, further comprising a brake/inertia device coupled to the crank system.
- 789. The apparatus of claim 788, wherein the brake/inertia device is coupled to a portion of the frame in front of the user.
- 790. The apparatus of claim 788, wherein the brake/inertia device is coupled to a portion of the frame behind the user.
- 791. The apparatus of claim 788, further comprising a housing, wherein the housing encloses at least a portion of the brake/inertia device.
- 792. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein the foot members, the arm links, and the cam devices are configured to allow the user of the apparatus to selectively vary the path of the foot members based on an amount of force applied by the user's feet during use of the apparatus.
- 793. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein the foot members, the arm links, and the cam devices are configured to provide a force that restores the user's feet to a neutral position during use of the apparatus.
- 794. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein the foot members, the arm links, and the cam devices are configured such that a force from a majority of the weight of the user is applied to the cam devices.
- 795. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein the apparatus is configured such that articulation of the user's feet is controlled in combination with the user's stride during use of the apparatus.
- 796. The apparatus of claim 769, wherein the crank system is directly attached to the frame.
- 797. A variable stride exercise apparatus, comprising:
a frame; a crank system coupled to the frame; a left foot member coupled to the crank system, wherein the left foot member comprises a left footpad; a right foot member coupled to the crank system, wherein the right foot member comprises a right footpad; a variable stride system, wherein the variable stride system is coupled to the left foot member such that at least a portion of the crank system is under at least a portion of the left footpad, wherein the variable stride system is coupled to the right foot member such that at least a portion of the crank system is under at least a portion of the right footpad, wherein the variable stride system is configured to allow a user of the apparatus to vary the length of the user's stride during use of the apparatus; wherein the left foot member and the right foot member are cross coupled so that the left foot member moves in opposition to the right foot member; wherein the apparatus is configured such that the feet of the user can travel in a substantially closed path during use of the apparatus; and wherein the apparatus is configured such that at least a portion of the apparatus remains substantially stationary during use.
- 798. The apparatus of claim 797, further comprising a left arm link coupled to the left foot member, and a right arm link coupled to the right foot member.
- 799. The apparatus of claim 797, wherein the variable stride system comprises at least one cam device.
- 800. The apparatus of claim 797, wherein the crank system comprises a left roller and a right roller, wherein the left foot member comprises a left cam device, wherein the right foot member comprises a right cam device, wherein a surface of the left cam device is configured to move along the left roller during use, and wherein a surface of the the right cam device is configured to move along the right roller during use.
- 801. The apparatus of claim 797, wherein the apparatus has a maximum stride length that is at least about 40% of an overall length of the apparatus.
- 802. The apparatus of claim 797, wherein the foot members are configured such that the user's stride controls the path of the foot members.

- 804. The apparatus of claim 797, wherein the foot members and the variable stride system are configured to allow the user of the apparatus to selectively vary the path of the foot members based on an amount of force applied by the user's feet during use of the apparatus.
- 805. The apparatus of claim 797, wherein the foot members and the variable stride system are configured to provide a force that restores the user's feet to a neutral position during use of the apparatus.
- 806. The apparatus of claim 797, wherein the variable stride system comprises left and right cam devices, and wherein the foot members, the arm links, and the cam devices are configured such that a force from a majority of the weight of the user is applied to the cam devices.
- 807. The apparatus of claim 797, further comprising a brake/inertia device coupled to the crank system.
- 808. A variable stride exercise apparatus, comprising:
a frame; a crank system coupled to the frame; a foot member coupled to the crank system, wherein the foot member comprises a footpad; an arm link pivotally coupled to the foot member; and a variable stride system coupled to the foot member such that at least a portion of the variable stride system is under at least a portion of the footpad, wherein the variable stride system is configured to allow a user of the apparatus to vary the length of the user's stride during use of the apparatus; wherein the apparatus is configured such that a foot of the user can travel in a substantially closed path during use of the apparatus; and wherein the apparatus is configured such that at least a portion of the apparatus remains substantially stationary during use.
- 809. The apparatus of claim 808, wherein the substantially closed path comprises a substantially elliptical path.
- 810. The apparatus of claim 808, further comprising a second foot member, wherein the foot member and the second foot member comprise a left foot member and a right foot member, and wherein the left foot member and the right foot member are cross coupled so that the left foot member moves in opposition to the right foot member.
- 811. The apparatus of claim 808, wherein the foot member is coupled to the crank system through the variable stride system.
- 812. The apparatus of claim 808, wherein the arm link is pivotally coupled to the frame.
- 813. The apparatus of claim 808, wherein the variable stride system comprises at least one cam device.
