Claims
- 1. An article carrier for a vehicle having a generally horizontally extending exterior body surface, the article carrier comprising:
- a pair of spaced side rails mounted on the exterior body surface and extending longitudinally along the vehicle, each side rail having a longitudinally extending interior cavity formed therein of a predetermined cross section, the interior cavity opening exteriorly through the side rail;
- a cross rail extending laterally between the pair of side rails;
- a pair of stanchions, each extending from opposite ends of the cross rail and slidably engageable with the longitudinal interior cavity in the side rails through the opening therein;
- latch means, formed on each stanchion and each side rail, for selectively latching each stanchion to each side rail in one of a plurality of spaced positions along the length of each side rail;
- actuator means, coupled to the latch means associated with one of the pair of stanchions and operable from a position adjacent one stanchion, for moving the latch means on the one of the pair of stanchions to a latch position in which the latch means effects locking engagement between a side rail and the one of the pair of stanchions, and for enabling the latch means to be moved to an unlatched position; and
- means for pivotally mounting each stanchion to each of the pair of side rails such that lateral movement of one of the stanchions and the cross rail, when the latch means is in the unlatched position, causes disengagement of the latch means on both of the pair of stanchions and the side rails to permit free longitudinal movement of the cross rail and the pair of stanchions along the pair of side rails.
- 2. The article carrier of claim 1 wherein:
- each stanchion comprises a separate member attached to one end of the cross rail.
- 3. The article carrier of claim 1 wherein:
- each stanchion comprises an integral, one-piece extension of the cross rail.
- 4. An article carrier for a vehicle having a generally horizontally extending exterior body surface, the article carrier comprising:
- a pair of spaced side rails mounted on the exterior body surface and extending longitudinally along the vehicle, each side rail having a longitudinally extending interior cavity formed therein of a predetermined cross section, the interior cavity opening exteriorly through the side rail;
- a cross rail extending laterally between the pair of side rails;
- a pair of stanchions, each extending from opposite ends of the cross rail and slidably engageable with the longitudinal interior cavity in the side rails through the opening therein;
- latch means, formed on each stanchion and each side rail, for selectively and adjustably latching each stanchion to each side rail in one of a plurality of spaced positions along the length of each side rail; and
- actuator means, coupled to the latch means associated with one of the pair of stanchions and operable from a position adjacent one stanchion, for moving the latch means on one of the stanchions between a latch position in which the latch means on the one stanchion fixedly engages the latch means on one side rail and an unlatch position in which the latch means on the one stanchion is disengagable from the latch means on the side rail;
- a carrier fixedly mounted in the interior cavity in each side rail;
- a toothed rack mounted in each carrier;
- at least one toothed ball rotatably mounted in a housing carried by each stanchion and having a toothed portion engageable with the toothed rack in the carrier through the opening in the side rail;
- the latch means comprising:
- a first toothed latch rack mounted on the carrier; and
- a second toothed latch rack mounted on the housing and releasably engageable with the first toothed latch rack;
- a resilient arm movably connecting each housing to one of the stanchions;
- the actuator means including a wedge coupled to an actuator member movably mounted in one of the stanchions, the wedge releasably engageable with an inclined surface formed on one of the carriers, when the actuator member is in a first position, for urging the wedge in a first lateral direction against the housing to bring the first and second toothed racks into engagement to fixedly position the cross rail with respect to the side rail;
- the actuator member, upon actuation to a second position, disengaging the wedge from the housing to unlatch the first and second toothed racks and permitting a manual lateral force exerted on one stanchion to rotate the housing about the toothed ball in one carrier in a direction to disengage the second toothed latch rack from the first toothed latch rack and to move the resilient arm connected to each housing in a direction to rotate the housing in the opposite side rail in a direction to disengage the second toothed rack from the first toothed rack in the opposite carrier to permit longitudinal movement of the cross rail with respect to the side rails.
