Claims
- 1. A bumper for use with a vehicle having a mounting member, said bumper comprising:
- a fascia having a front portion adapted to receive impact forces and upper and lower flanges extending rearwardly from said front portion;
- a resiliently compressible plastic foam molded in situ within at least a substantial portion of the volume bounded by said fascia, said foam having an integral skin bonded to adjacent surfaces of the fascia; and
- means bonded to the integral skin of the foam for mounting said bumper in operative position on the mounting member of the vehicle.
- 2. The bumper as defined in claim 1 wherein said mounting means comprises at least one tapping plate secured to said foam and adapted to connect to said mounting member.
- 3. The bumper as defined in claim 2 wherein each tapping plate is embedded in the foam.
- 4. The bumper as defined in claim 1 wherein the plastic foam is an integral skin polyurethane foam.
- 5. The bumper as defined in claim 1 wherein the fascia is a formed member.
- 6. The bumper as defined in claim 5 wherein the fascia is formed of plastic.
- 7. The bumper as defined in claim 6 wherein the fascia is an injection molded plastic member.
- 8. The bumper as defined in claim 1 wherein the plastic foam has a varying density over its cross sectional area.
