Claims
- 1. A railroad car having at least one deck for supporting and transporting four-wheel vehicles;
- at least one track secured to the deck longitudinally of the railroad car;
- the track having a pair of substantially upwardly extending spaced apart surfaces;
- chock blocks for each vehicle transported on the deck to secure the vehicle against longitudinal movement;
- each chock block including a first member which nests with the track and is quickly removable therefrom by upward displacement;
- each chock block having an elongate second member overlying and permanently joined to the first member;
- the second member terminating beyond the periphery of a vehicle wheel located alongside the track;
- the second member having a bottom surface and a pair of side walls joined to the bottom surface and sloping upwardly therefrom towards each other;
- the second member having first and second ends and the first member being located therebetween;
- means on the first member for removably securing the first member to the track, when in nesting position therewith, to prevent the chock block from horizontal movement along the track and upward movement from the track when the second member is lifted from one end thereof; and
- first and second support means on the second member spaced on opposite side of the first member, which support means can contact the deck and thereby maintain the chock block substantially horizontal when an upward or downward external force is applied to the second member.
- 2. A railroad car according to claim 1 in which:
- the second member bottom surface in part constitutes a top surface of the first member; and
- the first member includes a pair of spaced apart depending walls, nesting with the track upwardly extending spaced apart surfaces.
- 3. Transportation equipment having at least one deck for supporting and transporting four-wheel vehicles;
- at least one track being secured to the deck;
- chock blocks for securing a deck-supported vehicle to said deck;
- each chock block having a first member, a second member and means on the first member for removably securing the chock block to the track;
- the first member having a portion thereof nesting with the track and being removable therefrom by upward displacement of said first member;
- the second member having an elongate arm permanently joined to the first member;
- the elongate arm being adapted to extend behond the periphery of a tire of a vehicle located alongside the track;
- the chock block having means on the first member removably securing the first member portion to the track, when in nesting position therewith, for preventing horizontal movement of the chock block along the track and upward movement from the track; and
- means on opposite sides of, and separate from and spaced from, the first member which contacts the deck and thereby maintains the second member elongate arm substantially horizontal when upward or downward forces are applied to the second member elongate arm.
- 4. A chock block for securing a vehicle on a deck;
- said chock block including a first member for nesting with and engaging a track affixed to the deck and being removable therefrom by upward displacement;
- said chock block including a second member having an elongate arm integral with the first member;
- the second member having first and second ends;
- the first member being located between and spaced from the first and second ends of said second member;
- a first support leg extending from adjacent the second member first end for engaging the deck;
- a second support leg extending from adjacent the second member second end for engaging the deck, said first and second support legs being spaced apart on opposite sides of said first member;
- the second member being located above the deck when the first member and the track are in nesting arrangement;
- the second member first and second support legs maintaining said second member in a stationary spaced relation relative to the deck when upward or downward external forces are applied to said second member;
- the second member extending beyond the periphery of a vehicle wheel located alongside the track; and
- the chock block having means associated with the first member for removably securing the first member in a nesting position with the track and preventing relative movement of the first member and chock block with respect to the track.
- 5. A chock block for securing a vehicle on a deck;
- said chock block including a first member for nesting with and engaging a track affixed to the deck and being removable from such nesting arrangement by upward displacement;
- said chock block including a second member having an elongate arm integral with the first member;
- the second member extending beyond the periphery of a vehicle wheel located alongside the track;
- means associated with the first member for removably securing the first member to the track, when in nesting position therewith, and preventing relative movement by the first member and chock block with respect to the track; and
- first and second support means on the second member, separate from and spaced from opposite sides of the first member, for contacting the deck and maintaining the chock block in a predetermined spaced relation with respect to the deck when upward or downward external forces are applied to the second member.
- 6. A chock block for securing a vehicle on a deck;
- said chock block including a track-engaging portion for positioning the chock block on a track affixed to the deck, an elongate wheel-engaging portion and locking means for removably securing the track-engaging portion and chock block to the track;
- the track-engaging portion being nestable with the track and being removable therefrom by substantially upward displacement;
- the wheel-engaging portion being permanently joined to the track-engaging portion and having sufficient length to extend beyond a vehicle wheel located alongside the track;
- first and second support means on the wheel-engaging portion spaced on opposite sides of the track-engaging portion, which support means can contact the deck and thereby maintain the chock block substantially horizontal when an upward or downward external force is applied to the vehicle wheel-engaging portion; and
- locking means, when the track-engaging portion is in a nesting position with the track, for preventing relative movement of the chock bloc, with respect to the track.
- 7. A chock block for securing a vehicle on a substantially horizontal deck;
- said chock block comprising a track-engaging portion for engaging the chock block on a track affixed to the deck, an elongate wheel-engaging portion, and locking means associated with the track-engaging portion for removably securing the chock block to the track;
- the track-engaging portion being nestable with the track and being movable therefrom by substantially upward displacement;
- the wheel-engaging portion being permanently affixed to the track-engaging portion and extending beyond the periphery of a vehicle wheel disposed adjacent to the track;
- a first deck engaging portion depending from the wheel-engaging portion disposed fore of the track-engaging portion and a second deck engaging portion depending from the wheel engaging portion disposed aft of the track-engaging portion; and
- locking means, when the track-engaging portion is in a nesting position with the track, for preventing relative movement of the chock block with respect to the track.
