Claims
- 1. The method of transmitting data in a transport vehicle manned by a single person, which comprises:
- establishing a vehicle local area network within the vehicle and connecting respective points on the vehicle where data device means are to be mounted,
- providing operating potential to the vehicle local area network from a vehicle power source,
- coupling different portable data device means to the vehicle local area network at at least one of the respective points on the vehicle, for data interchange with other data device means which are coupled with the vehicle local area network, and
- dynamically assigning addresses to the respective different portable data device means as they are coupled with the vehicle local area network and using such addresses in effecting data interchange with such respective portable data device means via the vehicle local area network.
- 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising coupling with the vehicle local area network at a mounting location, a handheld unit and a scanner device, transporting the scanner device by hand to a scanning location remote from the vehicle and effecting scanning therewith at the scanning location to collect data, and coupling the data collected by the scanner device with the vehicle local area network via the handheld unit while the handheld unit remains at the mounting location on the vehicle.
- 3. A vehicle data gathering system comprising:
- a) a portable data terminal comprising a keyboard for the manual entry of data, a display for displaying data, a rechargeable terminal power source and first electrical contact means connected to said rechargeable terminal power source for facilitating the recharging of said terminal power source;
- b) vehicle power bus means for conveying power from a vehicle power source to a second electrical contact means;
- c) a terminal receiving adaptor having said second electrical contact means affixed thereto and comprising means for defining a channel for receiving said portable data terminal in a received, recharging position wherein said first electrical contact means is aligned to electrically connect with said second electrical contact means to permit the application of power from said vehicle power source via said vehicle power bus means and said electrically connected first and second electrical contact means to recharge said rechargeable terminal power source, and for releasing said portable data terminal from said channel to permit the use of said portable data terminal remote from the vehicle; and
- d) adjustable mounting means affixed to the vehicle and manually adjustable by a vehicle operator for disposing said terminal receiving adaptor and said portable data terminal received within said channel in a variety of positions to facilitate the viewing of said display and the manual entry of data upon said keyboard by the vehicle operator.
- 4. A vehicle data gathering system as claimed in claim 3, wherein said portable data terminal comprises a front side upon which said keyboard and said display are both arranged, said channel defining means being cut away to receive said portable data terminal so that said keyboard and said display are exposed when said portable data terminal is disposed within said channel in said received, recharging position for simultaneous manual actuation and viewing respectively.
- 5. A vehicle data gathering system as claimed in claim 4, wherein said portable data terminal further comprises a back side opposing said front side, said channel comprises front and back surfaces opposing each other for receiving respectively said front and back sides of said portable data terminal as it is inserted within said channel, said back side having a longitudinal dimension substantially equal to that of said back surface to thereby guide said portable data terminal as it is being inserted into said channel and fully supports said portable data terminal when it is disposed within said channel, said front surface having a longitudinal dimension substantially less than that of said front side such that said display and said keyboard are exposed for operator viewing and manipulation respectively when said portable data terminal is disposed in said received, recharging position.
- 6. A vehicle data gathering system as claimed in claim 3, wherein said terminal receiving adaptor further comprises means for releasably retaining said portable data terminal within said channel in said received, recharging position during mobile use of the vehicle and for providing quick removal of said portable data terminal from said channel for portable use remote from the vehicle.
- 7. A vehicle data gathering system as claimed in claim 6, wherein said channel comprises a first closed end and a second open end, said second electrical contact means comprising a resilient, electrically conductive member affixed to said first closed end for flexibly exerting a force opposing the insertion of said portable data terminal through said second open end and into said channel, said releasably retaining means overcoming said opposing force and holding said portable data terminal within said channel at said received, recharging position.
- 8. A vehicle data gathering system as claimed in claim 7, wherein said portable data terminal further comprises engaging means, and said releasably retaining means engages said engaging means to thereby hold said portable data terminal precisely at said received, recharging position.
- 9. A vehicle data gathering system as claimed in claim 8, wherein said engaging means defines a recess precisely spaced from said first closed end and said releasably retaining means comprises a flexible cantilever member having a first end affixed to said channel and a second extending into said channel to intercept said portable data terminal as it is inserted into said channel and to engage said recess to thereby precisely position said portable data terminal in its received, recharging position within said channel.
