Claims
- 1. A vehicle data system, comprising:
- a) a vehicle data path communicatively coupling a first location in a vehicle to a second location in a vehicle;
- b) a peripheral device coupled at said second location with said vehicle data path;
- c) a portable data device, said portable data device comprising a vehicle data path controller; and
- d) a mobile mount adapter, communicatively coupled with said vehicle data path at said first location, said mobile mount adapter comprising a portable data device connector apparatus;
- wherein said vehicle data path controller manages vehicle data path data flow when said portable data device is connected with said mobile mount adapter.
- 2. The vehicle data system according to claim 1, wherein said peripheral device comprises a second vehicle data path controller, wherein said second vehicle data path controller manages vehicle data path data flow when said portable data device is not connected to said mobile mount adapter.
- 3. The vehicle data system according to claim 1, wherein said vehicle data path controller comprises a processor programmed to respond to said portable data device and manage data flow on said vehicle data path when connected to said mobile mount adapter.
- 4. The vehicle data system according to claim 1, wherein said peripheral device comprises a data input device.
- 5. The vehicle data system according to claim 1, wherein said peripheral device is a display device positioned to be readily viewed by an occupant of a vehicle containing the vehicle data system.
- 6. A vehicle data system, comprising:
- a) first means for conveying data from one part of a vehicle to another;
- b) second means, located at a first location on the vehicle, in data communication with said first means for inputting data thereto;
- c) third means for collecting data, being portable with respect to said first and second means, said third means comprising fourth means for controlling; and
- d) fifth means, located at a second location on the vehicle, for receiving and retaining said portable third means in a docked mode wherein said portable third means is in data communication with said first means to exchange data therewith and for releasing said portable third means to operate in a portable mode, and wherein said fourth means has primary responsibility for managing the flow of data via said first means when said portable third means is in said docked mode.
- 7. A vehicle data system, comprising:
- a) a vehicle data path;
- b) a portable data device including a data collector and a first wireless communication system;
- c) a second wireless communication system coupled with said vehicle data path; and
- d) a mobile mount adapter, communicatively coupled with said vehicle data path, said mobile mount adapter comprising a portable data device connector apparatus, said first wireless communication system rendered operable when said portable data device is coupled with said portable data device connector apparatus, said second wireless communication system rendered operable when said portable data device is not coupled with said portable data device connector apparatus.
- 8. A vehicle data system according to claim 7, wherein said first and second wireless communication systems communicate with each other when said portable data device is not coupled with said portable data device connector apparatus.
- 9. A vehicle data system, comprising:
- a) a vehicle data path;
- b) a peripheral device coupled with said vehicle data path at a first location on a vehicle;
- c) a portable data device;
- d) a data path controller;
- e) a data collector;
- f) an extendable data transmission path coupled to said data collector and to said portable data device; and
- g) a mobile mount adapter communicatively coupled, at a second location on the vehicle, with said vehicle data path communicatively coupling said portable data device to said vehicle data path in a docked mode and releasing said portable data device in a portable mode, said data path controller communicating data from said data collector to said vehicle data path when in a docked mode.
- 10. The vehicle data system according to claim 9, wherein said portable data device comprises said data path controller.
- 11. The vehicle data system according to claim 9, wherein said extendable data transmission path comprises a flexible cable.
- 12. The vehicle data system according to claim 9, wherein said extendable data transmission path comprises a wireless data transmission link.
- 13. The vehicle data system according to claim 9, wherein a unique address is assigned to said portable data device upon being received in said mobile mount adapter.
- 14. The vehicle data system according to claim 13, wherein said extendable data transmission path comprises a wireless data transmission link whereby said data collector may be operated at a distance from the vehicle while maintaining said portable data device in its docked mode and without reassigning an address to said portable data device upon operating said data collector.
- 15. The vehicle data system according to claim 9, wherein there is further included a vehicle electrical power source, and a vehicle power path coupled to said vehicle electrical power sources to said peripheral device and to said mobile mount adapter.
- 16. The vehicle data system according to claim 15, wherein there is included an interface comprising a driving circuit enabling data communication between said portable data device and said vehicle data path, and further including a power switch activatable to apply power from said vehicle power source via said vehicle power path to said driver circuit upon transmission of data from said portable data device.
- 17. The vehicle data system according to claim 16, wherein said portable data device includes said data path controller.
- 18. The vehicle data system according to claim 16, wherein when said data path controller is ready to transmit data to said vehicle data path, said power switch is activated to apply power to said driving circuit.
- 19. The vehicle data system according to claim 18, wherein said mobile mount adapter includes said interface.
- 20. The vehicle data system according to claim 9, wherein there is included a data collector holster, said data collector being separate from said portable data device.
- 21. The vehicle data system according to claim 20, wherein said data collector includes a collector power source, said extendable data transmission path comprises a wireless data transmission link, said data collector holster releasing said data collector in said portable mode wherein said collector power source energizes said data collector, and said data collector holster receiving and retaining said data collector in said docked mode wherein said vehicle power source energizes said data collector and recharges said collector power source.
- 22. A vehicle data system, comprising:
- a) a vehicle data path transmitting data from one part of the vehicle to another;
- b) a plurality of data input registers, each coupled to said vehicle data path;
- c) a mobile mount adapter coupled to said vehicle data path;
- d) a portable data device comprising a memory and a processor programmed to control downloading and uploading of data, said portable data device removably coupled to said mobile mount adapter and to a remote host; and
- e) said mobile mount adapter receiving said portable data device in a docked mode wherein said portable data device is coupled with said vehicle data path, and said mobile mount adapter releasing said portable data device to operate in a portable mode wherein said portable data device may be coupled to the remote host.
- 23. The vehicle data system according to claim 22, wherein there is further included a second memory coupled to said vehicle data path for downloading data from said vehicle data path to said second memory and for uploading data from said second memory to said vehicle data path, and a vehicle data path controller for controlling the flow of data along said vehicle data path.
- 24. The vehicle data system according to claim 22, wherein there is included a fixed mount adapter, said fixed mount adapter coupled to the remote host and receiving said portable data device in its docked mode wherein said portable data device is in data communication with the remote host and said processor is operable to control downloading of data from the remote host to said memory and uploading of data from said memory to the remote host, and said fixed mount adapter releasing said portable data device to operate in its portable mode wherein said portable data device may be coupled to said mobile mount adapter.
- 25. The vehicle data system according to claim 22, wherein there is included a plurality of fixed mount adapters, each of said plurality of fixed mount adapters is coupled to a fixed data path, and a fixed data path controller is coupled to said fixed data path.
- 26. The vehicle data system according to claim 22, wherein there is included a fixed data path connected to the remote host and a fixed mount adapter, and a fixed data path controller coupled to said fixed data path operative in said portable mode to control the flow of data over said fixed data path.
- 27. The vehicle data system according to claim 26, wherein said processor of said portable data device is programmed to operate in said docked mode with either said mobile mount adaptor or said fixed mount adaptor to control data flow along said vehicle data path or said fixed data path.
- 28. The vehicle data system according to claim 27, wherein there is further included a controller coupled to said vehicle data path and operative in said portable mode to control primarily the flow of data along said vehicle data path.
