Claims
- 1. A method for making a panel assembly for use in a vehicle opening comprising:
- providing a panel in the form of a sheet and having a size and geometry adapted to fit in the vehicle opening and having first and second surfaces terminating in a common peripheral edge;
- forming a first polymeric gasket in a mold separate and apart from said panel;
- substantially simultaneously forming a second polymeric gasket in the mold separate and apart from said panel; and
- locating said panel in the mold with respect to said first and second gaskets after the forming step so that said first gasket engages and is bonded to at least a portion of said first surface and said second gasket engages and is bonded to at least a portion of said second surface.
- 2. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein bonding said first and second gaskets to said panel includes using said mold to apply force to said first and second gaskets against said panel while said gaskets retain a substantial amount of heat generated during the forming step.
- 3. A method as recited in claim 2, further including the step of heating said panel.
- 4. A method as recited in claim 3, wherein heating said panel occurs before locating said panel with respect to said first and second gaskets.
- 5. A method as recited in claim 4, further including heating said panel after locating said panel with respect to said first and second gaskets.
- 6. A method as recited in claim 3, wherein heating said panel occurs substantially simultaneously with the step of bonding.
- 7. A method as recited in claim 6, further including the step of priming at least said portions of said first and second surfaces adapted to receive said first and second gaskets, with an adhesion promoting priming composition prior to the step of heating.
- 8. A method as recited in claim 3, further including the step of heating said panel after locating said panel with respect to said first and second gaskets to promote adhesion.
- 9. A method as recited in claim 8, wherein the step of heating after locating said panel with respect to said first and second gaskets occurs substantially simultaneously with the step of bonding.
- 10. A method as recited in claim 9, further including heating the contact boundaries between the panel and said first and second gaskets.
- 11. A method as recited in claim 10, wherein heating the contact boundaries further includes focusing infrared energy through said panel from sides opposite said first and second gaskets.
- 12. A method as recited in claim 11 including:
- providing a frit coating between said panel and at least one of said gaskets; and
- heating said frit layer.
- 13. A method as recited in claim 1 further including locating at least said second gasket on said panel with an extending portion projecting beyond said peripheral edge whereby said extending portion forms a weather seal in said assembly.
- 14. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein forming said first and second polymeric gaskets includes molding each in a mold apparatus from a polymeric material using a blank pattern; and
- removing said blank pattern while retaining said gaskets in said mold apparatus prior to locating said panel with respect to said first and second gaskets.
- 15. A method for making a panel assembly for use in a vehicle opening, comprising:
- providing a panel in the form of a sheet and having a size and geometry adapted to fit in the vehicle opening and having first and second surfaces terminating in a common peripheral edge;
- substantially simultaneously forming first and second polymeric gaskets in a mold apparatus from a polymeric material using a blank insert;
- removing said blank insert from the mold apparatus after the step of forming the first and second polymeric gaskets while retaining said first and second polymeric gaskets in said mold apparatus; and
- locating said panel in the mold apparatus with respect to said first and second polymeric gaskets so that said first polymeric gasket engages and is bonded to at least a portion of said first surface of said panel, and said second polymeric gasket engages and is bonded to at least a portion of said second surface of said panel.
- 16. A method for making a panel assembly for use in a vehicle opening, comprising:
- substantially simultaneously molding a plurality of polymeric gaskets using a mold insert, each of said plurality of polymeric gaskets having a predetermined profile and configuration;
- providing a panel in the form of a sheet and having first and second surfaces terminating in a common peripheral edge defining a size and geometry adapted to fit in the vehicle opening;
- replacing said mold insert following the step of forming said plurality of gaskets with said panel; and
- forcing said plurality of polymeric gaskets into contact with said panel to produce the panel assembly.
