Claims
- 1. A vehicular exterior rearview mirror system, comprising:an exterior mirror assembly adapted for mounting to a side of a vehicle; said exterior mirror assembly comprising a casing, said casing defining a cavity, a reflectance element incorporated in said cavity, said reflectance element adjustably mounted with respect to said casing on an electrically-operated actuator for providing adjustment of the position of said reflectance element; said exterior mirror assembly further including at least one chosen from a turn signal light assembly and a security light assembly, said turn signal light assembly including a light source, said turn signal light assembly fixedly mounted with respect to said casing and separate from said adjustable reflectance element, said turn signal light assembly adapted to project a pattern of light from said exterior mirror assembly observable to a driver of another vehicle passing from behind the side of the vehicle equipped with said turn signal light assembly, said pattern of light of said turn signal light assembly substantially unobserved by a driver of the vehicle when said exterior mirror assembly is mounted to said side of the vehicle, said turn signal light assembly adapted for connection with a turn signal circuit of the vehicle such that said turn signal light assembly actuates when the turn signal circuit is being actuated in order to provide a warning light to the driver of the another vehicle passing the vehicle that a lane change by the vehicle is intended, said warning light being substantially unobserved by the driver of the vehicle, said security light assembly including a light source, said security light assembly adapted for connection to a control of the vehicle, an actuator for said security light assembly including a base unit in the vehicle and a remote transmitter, said control responsive to a signal from said remote transmitter in order to actuate said security in order to project a light beam from said exterior mirror assembly on a ground area adjacent a portion of the vehicle in order to create a lighted security zone in a vicinity of entry and exit by a vehicle occupant and wherein said signal from said remote transmitter comprises a radio frequency signal; and wherein said mounting of said exterior mirror assembly comprises a breakaway joint assembly, said breakaway joint assembly including a stationary member adapted for attachment to the side of the vehicle, a pivot member and a wire-way.
- 2. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein said turn signal light assembly comprises a lens.
- 3. The mirror system of claim 2 wherein said lens comprises a filtering lens.
- 4. The mirror system of claim 3 wherein said filtering lens comprises an amber-filtering lens.
- 5. The mirror system of claim 3 wherein said filtering lens comprises a red-filtering lens.
- 6. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein said turn signal light assembly comprises a reflector.
- 7. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises an incandescent source.
- 8. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises at least one light-emitting diode.
- 9. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises a fluorescent source.
- 10. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises a light pipe.
- 11. The mirror system of claim 10 wherein said light pipe comprises a fiber-optic bundle.
- 12. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein said exterior mirror assembly includes said turn signal light assembly and wherein said pattern of light projected from said exterior mirror assembly is selected from the group consisting of red-colored light and amber-colored light.
- 13. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein said exterior mirror assembly includes said turn signal light assembly and wherein said pattern of light projected from said exterior mirror assembly comprises amber-colored light.
- 14. The mirror system of claim 13 wherein said turn signal light assembly includes a light source selected from the group consisting of an incandescent lamp, a fluorescent lamp, a light-emitting diode and a light pipe.
- 15. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein said turn signal light assembly includes at least one of an amber light source and an amber-filtering lens.
- 16. The mirror system of claim 15 wherein said lens is selected from the group consisting of a segmented lens, a prismatic lens and a Fresnel lens.
- 17. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein said turn signal light assembly comprises a halogen lamp.
- 18. The mirror system of claim 2 wherein said pattern of light projected from said exterior mirror assembly is selected from the group consisting of red-colored light and amber-colored light.
- 19. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein said light source of said security light assembly comprises at least one light-emitting diode.
- 20. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein said reflectance element comprises an electrochromic reflectance element.
- 21. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein said electrochromic reflectance element further comprises a heater element.
- 22. The mirror system of claim 21 including at least one wire controlling operation of at least one of said electrically-operated actuator, said heater element and said electrochromic reflectance element, wherein said at least one wire passes through said wire-way.
- 23. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises a light pipe and wherein said pattern of light projecting rearwardly of the vehicle comprises amber-colored light.
- 24. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises at least one light-emitting diode and wherein said pattern of light projecting rearwardly of the vehicle comprises amber-colored light.
- 25. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises an incandescent source and wherein said pattern of light projecting rearwardly of the vehicle comprises amber-colored light.
- 26. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises a fluorescent source and wherein said pattern of light projecting rearwardly of the vehicle comprises amber-colored light.
- 27. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises a fluorescent source and wherein said pattern of light projecting rearwardly of the vehicle comprises amber-colored light.
- 28. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein said reflectance element of said driver-side exterior mirror assembly comprises an electrochromic reflectance element, wherein said electrochromic reflectance element further comprises a heater element, and wherein at least one wire controlling operation of at least one of said electrically-operated actuator, said heater element and said electrochromic reflectance element of said driver-side exterior mirror assembly passes through said wire-way.
- 29. A vehicular exterior rearview mirror system, comprising:an exterior mirror assembly adapted for mounting to a driver-side of a vehicle and an exterior mirror assembly adapted for mounting to a passenger-side of a vehicle; each of said exterior mirror assemblies comprising a casing, said casing defining a cavity, a reflectance element incorporated in said cavity, said reflectance element adjustably mounted with respect to said casing on an electrically-operated actuator for providing adjustment of the position of said reflectance element; each of said exterior mirror assemblies further including at least one chosen from a turn signal light assembly and a security light assembly, said turn signal light assembly including a light source, said turn signal light assembly fixedly mounted with respect to said casing and separate from said adjustable reflectance element, said turn signal light assembly adapted to project a pattern of light from each of said exterior mirror assemblies observable to a driver of another vehicle passing from behind the side of the vehicle equipped with said turn signal light assembly, said pattern of light of said turn signal light assembly substantially unobserved by a driver of the vehicle when each of said exterior mirror assemblies is mounted to said side of the vehicle, said turn signal light assembly adapted for connection with a turn signal circuit of the vehicle such that said turn signal light assembly actuates when the turn signal circuit is being actuated in order to provide a warning light to the driver of the another vehicle passing the vehicle that a lane change by the vehicle is intended, said warning light being substantially unobserved by the driver of the vehicle, said security light assembly including a light source, said security light assembly adapted for connection to a control of the vehicle, an actuator for said security light assembly including a base unit in the vehicle and a remote transmitter, said control responsive to a signal from said remote transmitter in order to actuate said security in order to project a light beam from each of said exterior mirror assemblies on a ground area adjacent a portion of the vehicle in order to create a lighted security zone in a vicinity of entry and exit by a vehicle occupant and wherein said signal from said remote transmitter comprises a radio frequency signal; and wherein said mounting of each of said exterior mirror assemblies comprises a breakaway joint assembly, said breakaway joint assembly including a stationary member adapted for attachment to the side of the vehicle, a pivot member and a wire-way.
- 30. The mirror system of claim 29 wherein said turn signal light assembly comprises a lens.
- 31. The mirror system of claim 30 wherein said pattern of light projected from each of said exterior mirror assemblies is selected from the group consisting of red-colored light and amber-colored light.
- 32. The mirror system of claim 30 wherein said lens comprises a filtering lens.
- 33. The mirror system of claim 32 wherein said filtering lens comprises an amber-filtering lens.
- 34. The mirror system of claim 32 wherein said filtering lens comprises a red-filtering lens.
- 35. The mirror system of claim 29 wherein said turn signal light assembly comprises a reflector.
- 36. The mirror system of claim 29 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises an incandescent source.
- 37. The mirror system of claim 29 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises at least one light-emitting diode.
- 38. The mirror system of claim 29 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises a fluorescent source.
- 39. The mirror system of claim 29 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises a light pipe.
- 40. The mirror system of claim 39 wherein said light pipe comprises a fiber-optic bundle.
- 41. The mirror system of claim 29 wherein each of said exterior mirror assemblies includes said turn signal light assembly and wherein said pattern of light projected from each of said exterior mirror assemblies is selected from the group consisting of red-colored light and amber-colored light.
- 42. The mirror system of claim 29 wherein each of said exterior mirror assemblies includes said turn signal light assembly and wherein said pattern of light projected from each of said exterior mirror assemblies comprises amber-colored light.
- 43. The mirror system of claim 42 wherein said turn signal light assembly includes a light source selected from the group consisting of an incandescent lamp, a fluorescent lamp, a light-emitting diode and a light pipe.
- 44. The mirror system of claim 29 wherein said turn signal light assembly includes at least one of an amber light source and an amber-filtering lens.
- 45. The mirror system of claim 44 wherein said lens is selected from the group consisting of a segmented lens, a prismatic lens and a Fresnel lens.
- 46. The mirror system of claim 29 wherein said turn signal light assembly comprises a halogen lamp.
- 47. The mirror system of claim 29 wherein said light source of said security light assembly comprises at least one light-emitting diode.
- 48. The mirror system of claim 29 wherein said reflectance element of said driver-side exterior mirror assembly comprises an electrochromic reflectance element.
- 49. The mirror system of claim 29 wherein said electrochromic reflectance element further comprises a heater element.
- 50. The mirror system of claim 49 including at least one wire controlling operation of at least one of said electrically-operated actuator, said heater element and said electrochromic reflectance element, and wherein said at least one wire passes through said wire-way.
- 51. The mirror system of claim 29 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises a light pipe and wherein said pattern of light projecting rearwardly of the vehicle comprises amber-colored light.
- 52. The mirror system of claim 29 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises at least one light-emitting diode and wherein said pattern of light projecting rearwardly of the vehicle comprises amber-colored light.
- 53. The mirror system of claim 29 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises an incandescent source and wherein said pattern of light projecting rearwardly of the vehicle comprises amber-colored light.
- 54. The mirror system of claim 29 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises a fluorescent source and wherein said pattern of light projecting rearwardly of the vehicle comprises amber-colored light.
- 55. The mirror system of claim 29 wherein said reflectance element of said driver-side exterior mirror assembly comprises an electrochromic reflectance element, wherein said electrochromic reflectance element further comprises a heater element, and wherein at least one wire controlling operation of at least one of said electrically-operated actuator, said heater element and said electrochromic reflectance element of said driver-side exterior mirror assembly passes through said wire-way.
- 56. A vehicular exterior rearview mirror system, comprising:an exterior mirror assembly adapted for mounting to a driver-side of a vehicle; said exterior mirror assembly comprising a casing, said casing defining a cavity, a reflectance element incorporated in said cavity, said reflectance element adjustably mounted with respect to said casing on an electrically-operated actuator for providing adjustment of the position of said reflectance element; said exterior mirror assembly further including at least one chosen from a turn signal light assembly and a security light assembly, said turn signal light assembly including a light source, said turn signal light assembly fixedly mounted with respect to said casing and separate from said adjustable reflectance element, said turn signal light assembly adapted to project a pattern of light from said exterior mirror assembly observable to a driver of another vehicle passing from behind the side of the vehicle equipped with said turn signal light assembly, said pattern of light of said turn signal light assembly substantially unobserved by a driver of the vehicle when said exterior mirror assembly is mounted to said side of the vehicle, said turn signal light assembly adapted for connection with a turn signal circuit of the vehicle such that said turn signal light assembly actuates when the turn signal circuit is being actuated in order to provide a warning light to the driver of the another vehicle passing the vehicle that a lane change by the vehicle is intended, said warning light being substantially unobserved by the driver of the vehicle, said security light assembly including a light source, said security light assembly adapted for connection to a control of the vehicle, an actuator for said security light assembly including a base unit in the vehicle and a remote transmitter, said control responsive to a signal from said remote transmitter in order to actuate said security in order to project a light beam from said exterior mirror assembly on a ground area adjacent a portion of the vehicle in order to create a lighted security zone in a vicinity of entry and exit by a vehicle occupant and wherein said signal from said remote transmitter comprises a radio frequency signal; wherein said mounting of said exterior mirror assembly comprises a breakaway joint assembly, said breakaway joint assembly including a stationary member adapted for attachment to the side of the vehicle, a pivot member and a wire-way; wherein said reflectance element comprises an electrochromic reflectance element, and wherein said electrochromic reflectance element further comprises a heater element; and wherein at least one wire controlling operation of at least one of said electrically-operated actuator, said heater element and said electrochromic reflectance element passes through said wire-way.
- 57. The mirror system of claim 56 wherein said turn signal light assembly comprises a lens.
- 58. The mirror system of claim 57 wherein said pattern of light projected from said exterior mirror assembly is selected from the group consisting of red-colored light and amber-colored light.
- 59. The mirror system of claim 57 wherein said lens comprises a filtering lens.
- 60. The mirror system of claim 59 wherein said filtering lens comprises an amber-filtering lens.
- 61. The mirror system of claim 59 wherein said filtering lens comprises a red-filtering lens.
- 62. The mirror system of claim 56 wherein said turn signal light assembly comprises a reflector.
- 63. The mirror system of claim 56 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises an incandescent source.
- 64. The mirror system of claim 56 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises at least one light-emitting diode.
- 65. The mirror system of claim 56 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises a fluorescent source.
- 66. The mirror system of claim 56 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises a light pipe.
- 67. The mirror system of claim 66 wherein said light pipe comprises a fiber-optic bundle.
- 68. The mirror system of claim 56 wherein said exterior mirror assembly includes said turn signal light assembly and wherein said pattern of light projected from said exterior mirror assembly is selected from the group consisting of red-colored light and amber-colored light.
- 69. The mirror system of claim 56 wherein said exterior mirror assembly includes said turn signal light assembly and wherein said pattern of light projected from said exterior mirror assembly comprises amber-colored light.
- 70. The mirror system of claim 69 wherein said turn signal light assembly includes a light source selected from the group consisting of an incandescent lamp, a fluorescent lamp, a light-emitting diode and a light pipe.
- 71. The mirror system of claim 56 wherein said turn signal light assembly includes at least one of an amber light source and an amber-filtering lens.
- 72. The mirror system of claim 71 wherein said lens is selected from the group consisting of a segmented lens, a prismatic lens and a Fresnel lens.
- 73. The mirror system of claim 56 wherein said turn signal light assembly comprises a halogen lamp.
- 74. The mirror system of claim 56 wherein said light source of said security light assembly comprises at least one light-emitting diode.
- 75. The mirror system of claim 56 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises a light pipe and wherein said pattern of light projecting rearwardly of the vehicle comprises amber-colored light.
- 76. The mirror system of claim 56 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises at least one light-emitting diode and wherein said pattern of light projecting rearwardly of the vehicle comprises amber-colored light.
- 77. The mirror system of claim 56 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises an incandescent source and wherein said pattern of light projecting rearwardly of the vehicle comprises amber-colored light.
- 78. The mirror system of claim 56 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises a fluorescent source and wherein said pattern of light projecting rearwardly of the vehicle comprises amber-colored light.
- 79. The mirror system of claim 56 wherein at least one of said light source of said turn signal light assembly and said light source of said security light assembly comprises a fluorescent source and wherein said pattern of light projecting rearwardly of the vehicle comprises amber-colored light.
