Claims
- 1. A method of restricting flow of contaminants into a covered hopper car having a hatch coaming, while permitting flow of air into the car to permit unloading of the car, comprising placing a screen or filter element in communication with an opening in the side of the hatch coaming without opening hatch covers.
- 2. A replaceable vented hatch coaming element configured to function as part of a vented hatch coaming assembly in a covered hopper car including a vented hatch coaming having an air intake opening formed in the side of the coaming, said element being effective to restrict flow of contaminants into the hopper car while permitting sufficient flow of air into the air intake opening in the side of the coaming to permit unloading of the car without opening a hatch cover, without vented hatch covers, and without increasing vacuum beyond acceptable levels during unloading.
- 3. A replaceable vented hatch coaming element in accordance with claim 2 comprising a filter.
- 4. A replaceable vented hatch coaming element in accordance with claim 2 comprising a screen.
- 5. A replaceable vented hatch coaming element in accordance with claim 2 comprising a screen and a filter.
- 6. A replaceable vented hatch coaming element in accordance with claim 2 wherein the element comprises a filter element which permits airflow of about 100 cfm without reducing internal pressure by more than 0.5 p.s.i., with a 90% rate of removal of particles greater than 20 microns.
- 7. A method of restricting flow of contaminants into a covered hopper car having a hatch coaming, while permitting flow of air into the car to permit unloading of the car, comprising placing a screen or filter element adjacent an opening in the side of the hatch coaming without opening hatch covers.
- 8. A method in accordance with claim 7 comprising placing a screen adjacent the opening in the side of the hatch coaming.
- 9. A method in accordance with claim 7 comprising placing a filter adjacent the opening in the side of the hatch coaming.
- 10. A method in accordance with claim 7 comprising placing a filter and a screen adjacent the opening in the side of the hatch coaming.
- 11. A method in accordance with claim 10 wherein the filter element permits airflow of about 100 cfm without reducing internal pressure by more than 0.5 p.s.i., with a 90% rate of removal of particles greater than 20 microns.
