Claims
- 1. A venting system for a driveshaft, wherein said driveshaft comprises first and second members each having splined portions, said second member being telescopically engaged with said first member, said splined portion of said first member cooperating with said splined portion of said second member thereby allowing said first and second members to cooperatively form the driveshaft, said venting system comprising:
at least one vent defined in said driveshaft for allowing air outside the driveshaft to pass into at least one of said first and second members; and a plug mounted over said at least one vent defined in said driveshaft.
- 2. The invention of claim 1 wherein the plug comprises a stem portion extending in a generally axial direction, and an end portion extending in a generally radial direction.
- 3. The plug of claim 2 further comprising at least one generally annularly extending cap portion, wherein said at least one generally annularly extending cap portion is arranged partially around said end portion defining at least one venting crevice.
- 4. The invention of claim 1 further comprising a weld yoke at an end of at least one of said first and second members, wherein said at least one vent defined in said driveshaft is defined in said weld yoke.
- 5. The invention of claim 4 wherein said weld yoke further comprises one or more openings defined by said weld yoke, the plug further comprises a stem portion extending in a generally axial direction, and an end portion extending in a generally radial direction, wherein said stem portion extends into one of said openings.
- 6. The invention of claim 5 wherein said stem portion extends into one of said openings under preload tension.
- 7. The invention of claim 3 wherein air outside the driveshaft passes into said first and second members by passing through said at least one venting crevice, and by passing through said at least one vent.
- 8. The invention of claim 1 wherein said plug is formed from an elastomeric material.
- 9. The invention of claim 1 wherein said plug is removable from said driveshaft.
- 10. The invention of claim 2 wherein the end portion has a generally parabolic shape.
- 11. A venting system for a splined driveshaft comprising:
a weld yoke at an end of said splined driveshaft; at least one vent defined in said weld yoke allowing air outside said splined driveshaft to pass into said splined driveshaft; and a plug mounted over said at least one vent.
- 12. The invention of claim 11 wherein said weld yoke further comprises one or more openings defined by said weld yoke, the plug further comprises a stem portion extending in a generally axial direction, an end portion extending in a generally radial direction, and at least one generally annularly extending cap portion, wherein said at least one generally annularly extending cap portion is arranged partially around said end portion defining at least one venting crevice.
- 13. The invention of claim 12 wherein said stem portion extends into one of said openings defined by said weld yoke, and said generally annularly extending cap portion is mounted over said at least one vent defined in said weld yoke.
- 14. The invention of claim 11 wherein said plug comprises a ball valve.
- 15. The invention of claim 11 wherein said plug comprises a stem portion extending in a generally axial direction, and one or more openings is defined by said stem portion, wherein air outside said splined driveshaft passes into said splined driveshaft though said one or more openings.
- 16. A method of venting a splined driveshaft comprising:
providing a splined driveshaft; forming at least one vent defined in said splined driveshaft; mounting a plug over said at least one vent defined in said splined driveshaft; and venting said splined driveshaft through said at least one vent.
- 17. The invention of claim 16 wherein said splined driveshaft comprises first and second members each having splined portions, said second member being telescopically resident within said first member, said splined portion of said first member cooperating with said splined portion of said second member thereby allowing said first and second members to cooperatively form the driveshaft.
- 18. The invention of claim 16 further comprising a weld yoke at an end of said splined driveshaft, wherein said weld yoke further comprises one or more openings defined by said weld yoke, the plug further comprises a stem portion extending in a generally axial direction, an end portion extending in a generally radial direction, and at least one generally annularly extending cap portion, wherein said at least one generally annularly extending cap portion is arranged partially around said end portion defining at least one venting crevice.
- 19. The invention of claim 16 wherein said plug is formed from an elastomeric material.
- 20. The invention of claim 16 wherein said plug is removable from said splined driveshaft.
