Claims
- 1. In a vertical window covering system, a window covering material portion having a plurality of sections disposed in a generally vertical orientation, said portion being adaptable to being traversed between open and closed conditions and having inherent distortion characteristics causing non-vertical hanging of left and right edge portions thereof in an open or partially open condition and misalignment out of the plane of traverse when traversing from an open to a closed condition; a traverse track adapted to be mounted in a horizontal orientation; a plurality of track mounting means for mounting a plurality of sections of said window covering material intermediate said left and right edge portions thereof for bidirectional traverse relative to said traverse track; first and second edge carrier means mounted to said traverse track with at least one of said carrier means adapted for bidirectional traverse on said track; edge stabilizer means mounted on each of said carrier means and including a housing holding said edge portions of said window covering material in a substantially straight vertical orientation when said material is traversed toward an open condition, a bracket operatively coupled to the upper end of said housing, and a stabilizer rod means mounted to said carrier means at one end and to said bracket at the opposite end and supporting said housing in an accurate vertical orientation and with a degree of rigidity sufficient to overcome said inherent distortion characteristic; said housings extending at least substantially the entire length of said edge portions of said window covering material and being secured thereto along said length; traverse alignment means for maintaining the alignment of said vertical material sections during said traverse toward said closed condition, said traverse alignment means including guide apertures formed in said vertical material sections at a prearranged position, an extendible guide cord routed through said guide apertures and tensioning means operatively connected to said guide cord for maintaining said guide cord in substantial tension throughout the traverse of said material portion between said open and closed conditions; and said edge stabilizer means further comprising a ball detent release mechanism providing the operative coupling between the bracket and the stabilizer rod means; said ball detent release mechanism being oriented for released pivotal movement about a pivot axis through the bracket to allow the bracket and housing to pivot relative to the stabilizer rod means approximately parallel to the plane of the fabric and having a release threshold such that upon exceeding said threshold the bracket and housing pivot in the direction of applied force in the plane of the material.
- 2. The vertical covering system of claim 1, said ball detent release mechanism further comprising a retainer plate section of the bracket and a mating retainer plate section of said stabilizer rod means, joined at said pivot axis, and at least one detent ball assembly comprising a ball captured in depression means in one of said retainer plate sections and releasably captured in depression means in the other of said retainer plate sections.
- 3. The vertical covering system of claim 2, further including at least a pair of said detent ball assemblies on opposite sides of said pivot axis.
- 4. The vertical covering system of claim 2, further comprising at least four detent ball assemblies located at positions spaced approximately at equal angles about said pivot axis.
- 5. The vertical covering system of claim 2, 3 or 4, further comprising means for resiliently holding said mating retainer plate sections together at said pivot axis with adjustable holding force.
- 6. The vertical covering system of claim 2, wherein at least one of said depression means is a hole.
- 7. The vertical window covering system of claim 1, said bracket comprising a semi-circular raceway member mounted to the top of said housing, said raceway member being oriented generally parallel to the plane of said material and having at least a pair of detent depressions formed on opposite sides of the pivot axis on the inside surfaces thereof; tube means mounted toward the bottom end of said stabilizer rod means and extending diametrically between said inside surfaces through said pivot point; a pair of detent balls positioned one each in either end of said tube means against said inside surfaces; compression means positioned within said tube means between each said detent ball and said stabilizer rod means and normally biasing said detent balls into the detent depression such that upon exceeding said threshold force, said detent balls are released from said depressions, thereby permitting the circular raceway member bracket and housing to pivot about said pivot point toward the direction of application of said force in the plane of said material.
- 8. The vertical covering system of claim 7, further comprising semi-circular front and rear housing sections on opposite sides of and enclosing said raceway member.
- 9. The vertical covering system of claim 8, further comprising an annular circular insert positioned along the inside periphery of said housing defining said ball detent raceway and wherein said detent ball-retaining depression means comprises holes formed in said annular circular insert.
- 10. The vertical covering system of claim 1, wherein said housing comprises an extrusion having opposite sides and an angled front side approximating the shape of pleats formed by said material; and further comprising a strip of pleat material spanning at least the sides and front of said housing and means for attaching the pleat material to said housing.
- 11. The vertical covering system of claim 10, wherein the housing sides form inside facing channels proximate the rear edge thereof; and further comprising a slat mounted within said opposite channels.
- 12. The vertical covering system of claim 1, said traverse track comprising a front wall, a rear wall, and upper and lower horizontal webs joined to said walls; said upper web forming an acute outside angle with said rear wall member; and said vertical covering system further comprising L-shaped bracket means adapted for attachment to a mounting surface such as a wall or ceiling and comprising a horizontal member and a joined vertical member; said horizontal member including a tab extending downwardly at an angle for mating in said horizontal web section and against said rear wall member, and the lower edge of said vertical member being configured for clamping the lower edge of said rear wall member of said track means.
- 13. The vertical covering system of claim 12, said traverse track further comprising a longitudinal slot in the lower horizontal web and a vertical guide bar extending downwardly from said spaced upper horizontal web; said edge carrier means further comprising an elongated sled body of size adapted for close slidable movement between the lower web and the bottom edge of the vertical guide bar; a pair of spaced apart guide bars proximate one end of said elongated sled body positioned at opposite sides of said vertical guide bar of guiding said carrier longitudinally along said guide bar; an upward extending projection on the opposite side of said elongated sled body engaging the inside surface of said upper web for restraining pivotal movement of said body; and a web section of said elongated body extending downwardly through said longitudinal slot to the opposite side of the horizontal web and including means for mounting said stabilizer rod means.
- 14. In a window covering system of the type mounting a window covering material for opening and closing traversal of said material along a traverse track:
- a window covering material having a plurality of foldable sections disposed in a generally vertical orientation, at least an edge portion of said material being adapted for traversing said material between opened and closed conditions;
- a traverse track adapted for mounting in an orientation transverse to the vertical; and
- an adjustable orientation, traversing mounting system for said material, comprising: an edge carrier mounted for traversing movement on said traverse track; an elongated edge stabilizer member mounted substantially rigidly to said edge carrier and to said material edge portion for holding said edge portion in a preselected substantially vertical orientation; and means for adjusting the orientation of said edge stabilizer member and said edge portion.
- 15. A window covering system of the type mounting a window covering material for opening and closing traversal of said material along a traverse track:
- a window covering material having a plurality of foldable sections disposed in a generally vertical orientation, at least an edge portion of said material being adapted for traversing said material between opened and closed conditions;
- a traverse track adapted for mounting in an orientation transverse to the vertical;
- an adjustable orientation, traversing mounting system for said material, comprising: an edge carrier mounted for traversing movement on said traverse track; an elongated edge stabilizer member mounted substantially rigidly to said edge carrier and to said material edge portion for holding said edge portion in a preselected substantially vertical fixed orientation; an means for adjusting the orientation of said edge stabilizer member and said edge portion; and
- traverse alignment means comprising guide apertures aligned along said foldable material sections, an extendable guide cord routed through said guide apertures and connected to said edge stabilizer member; and means connected to said guide cord for maintaining said guide cord under tension to align said foldable material sections during traversal.
- 16. In a covering system of the type mounting a window covering material for opening and closing traversal of said material along a traverse track:
- a covering material having a plurality of foldable sections disposed in a generally vertical orientation, at least an edge portion of said material being adapted for traversing said material between opened and closed conditions;
- a traverse track adapted for mounting in an orientation transverse to the vertical and including a longitudinally-extending channel; and
- a stress-relieved, traversing mounting system for said material, comprising: an edge carrier including a longitudinally-spaced support members captured within said channel for traversing movement along said traverse track; an elongated edge stabilizer member mounted along said material edge portion; and support means rigidly mounting said elongated edge stabilizer member to said edge carrier to maintain said edge portion in a preselected substantially vertical orientation, said support means being mounted for pivotal movement in the plane of said material such that upon application of a torque force having a component above a predetermined threshold value in the plane of said material, said elongated edge stabilizer member pivots in the direction of applied force to permit free traversal of said traverse system along said traverse track without binding.
- 17. In a covering system of the type mounting a window covering material for opening and closing traversal of said material along a traverse track:
- a covering material having a plurality of foldable sections disposed in a generally vertical orientation, at least an edge portion of said material being adapted for traversing said material between opened and closed conditions;
- a traverse track adapted for mounting in an orientation transverse to the vertical and including a longitudinally-extending channel; and
- a stress-relieved, adjustable orientation, traversing mounting system for said material, comprising: an edge carrier including longitudinally-spaced support members captured within said channel for traversing movement along said traverse track; an elongated edge stabilizer member mounted along said material edge portion; support means rigidly mounted said elongated edge stabilizer member to said edge carrier to maintain said edge portion in a preselected substantially vertical orientation, said support means being mounted for pivotal movement in the plane of said window covering material such that upon application of a torque force having a component above a predetermined threshold value in the plane of said material said edge stabilizer member pivots in the direction of applied force to permit free traversal of said traverse system along said traverse track without binding; and means for adjusting the orientation of said edge stabilizer member and said edge portion.
- 18. The window covering system of claim 17, further comprising:
- traverse alignment means comprising guide apertures aligned along said foldable vertical window covering material sections, an extendable guide cord routed through said guide apertures and connected to said edge stabilizer member; and means connected to said guide cord maintaining said guide cord under tension to align said foldable vertical window covering material sections during traversal.
- 19. In a window covering system of the type mounting a window covering material for opening and closing traversal of said material along a traverse track:
- a window covering material having a plurality of foldable sections disposed in a generally vertical orientation, at least an edge portion of said material being adapted for traversing said material between opened and closed conditions;
- a traverse track adapted for mounting in an orientation transverse to the vertical; and
- a stress-relieved; traversing mounting system for said material, comprising: an edge carrier mounted for traversing movement on said traverse track; an elongated edge stabilizer member mounted along said material edge portion; and support means substantially rigidly mounting said elongated edge stabilizer member to said edge carrier to maintain said edge portion in a preselected substantially vertical orientation, said support means being mounted so as to overcome said substantially rigid mounting for pivotal movement in the plane of said window covering material such that upon application of a torque force having a component above a predetermined threshold value in the plane of said material, said elongated edge stabilizer member pivots in the direction of applied force to permit free traversal of said traverse system along said traverse track without binding; and
- traverse alignment means comprising guide apertures aligned along said foldable vertical window covering material sections, an extendable guide cord routed through said guide apertures and connected to said edge stabilizer member; and means connected to said guide cord maintaining said guide cord under tension to align said foldable vertical window covering material sections during traversal.
- 20. The window covering system of claim 19, wherein the pivotal support means comprises a ball detent mechanism.
- 21. The window covering system of claim 20, wherein said ball detent release mechanism further comprises a first retainer plate at the bottom of said edge carrier and lying generally in the plane of said window covering material, and a second retainer plate at the top of said elongated edge stabilizer means and mounted to said first retainer plate for relative movement thereto about a pivot axis through said plates; and at least one detent ball arrangement comprising a ball captured in depression means of one of said retainer plates spaced from said pivot axis and releasably captured in depression means of the other of said retainer plates for release from said associated depression means upon application of said torque fore greater than the predetermined threshold value.
- 22. The window covering system of claim 21, further comprising at least a pair of said ball detent arrangements on opposite sides of said pivot axis.
- 23. The window covering system of claim 21, further comprising at least four detent ball arrangements located at approximately equiangular spaced positions about said pivot axis.
- 24. The window covering system of claim 20, further comprising means for resiliently holding said retaining plates against one another with adjustable holding force.
- 25. The window covering system of claim 24, wherein said holding means comprises a pivot shaft extending through said retaining plates at the pivot point thereof for permitting relative pivotal movement of said retaining plates, said pivot shaft being rotatably captured at one of said retaining plates and having a threaded section mating with a threaded hole in the other of said retaining plates for adjusting the separation between said plates; said shaft having an elongated shank terminating in an enlarged adjustment knob; and a spring captured between said retainer plates and said knob for maintaining a selected position setting and associated release threshold force.
- 26. The window covering system of claim 19, wherein said support means further includes a mounting bracket having a cone-shaped hole therein having a relatively small end and a relatively large opposite end and having the associated axis thereof oriented generally parallel to the direction of traverse; and an L-shaped mounting rod having one leg thereof adapted for mounting said elongated edge stabilizer member at the top thereof and the other leg thereof being of size adapted for insertion through said hole such that the small end of the hole acts as a pivot point for pivoting said mounting rod in the plane of said material; and means for selectively pivoting said mounting rod to alter the vertical orientation of the edge portion of said material.
- 27. The vertical window covering system of claim 20, said bracket comprising a semi-circular raceway member mounted to the top of said housing, said raceway member being oriented generally parallel to the plane of said material and having at least a pair of detent depressions formed on opposite sides of the pivot axis on the inside surfaces thereof; and further comprising tube means mounted toward the bottom end of said stabilizer rod means and extending diametrically between said inside surfaces through said pivot point; a pair of detent balls positioned one each in either end of said tube means against said inside surfaces; and compression means positioned within said tube means between each said detent ball and said stabilizer rod means and normally biasing said detent balls into the detent depression such that upon exceeding said threshold force, said detent balls are released from said depressions, thereby permitting the circular raceway member bracket and housing to pivot about said pivot point toward the direction of application of said force in the plane of said material.
- 28. The window covering system of claim 27, further comprising semi-circular front and rear housing sections on opposite sides of sand enclosing said raceway member.
- 29. The window covering system of claim 28, further comprising an annular circular insert positioned along the inside periphery of said housing defining said ball detent raceway and wherein said detent ball-retaining depression means comprises holes formed in said annular circular insert.
- 30. The window covering system of claim 15 or 19, said traverse track comprising a front wall, a rear wall, and upper and lower horizontal webs joined to said walls; said upper web forming an acute outside angle with said rear wall member; and said vertical covering system further comprising L-shaped bracket means adapted for attachment to a mounting surface such as a wall or ceiling and comprising a horizontal member and a joined vertical member; said horizontal member including a tab extending downwardly at an angle for mating in said horizontal web section and against said rear wall member, an the lower edge of said vertical member being configured for clamping the lower edge of said rear wall member of said track means.
- 31. The window covering system of claim 30, said traverse track further comprising a longitudinal slot in the lower horizontal web and a vertical guide bar extending downwardly from said spaced upper horizontal web; said edge carrier further comprising an elongated sled body of size adapted for close slidable movement between the lower web and the bottom edge of the vertical guide bar; a pair of spaced apart guide bars proximate one end of said sled body positioned at opposite sides of said vertical guide bar for guiding said carrier longitudinally along said guide bar; an upward extending projection on the opposite side of said sled body for slidable engaging the inside surface of said upper web for restraining pivotal movement of said sled body; and a web section of said elongated body extending downwardly through said longitudinal slot to the opposite side of the horizontal web and including means for mounting said stabilizer rod means.
- 32. In a window covering system of the type mounting a window covering material for opening and closing traversal of said material along a traverse track:
- a window covering material having a plurality of foldable sections disposed in a generally vertical orientation, at least an edge portion of said material being adapted for traversing said material between opened and closed conditions;
- a traverse track adapted for mounting in an orientation traverse to the vertical; and
- a stress-relieved, traversing mounting system for said material, comprising: an edge carrier mounted for traversing movement on said traverse track; an elongated edge stabilizer member mounted along said material edge portion; and a pivotal ball detent mechanism mounting said elongated edge stabilizer member to said edge carrier and maintaining said edge portion in a preselected substantially vertical orientation, said ball detent mechanism being oriented for pivotal movement in the plane of said material such that upon application of a torque force having a component above a predetermined threshold value in the plane of said material, said elongated edge stabilizer member pivots in the direction of applied force to permit free traversal of said traverse system along said traverse track without binding.
- 33. In a window covering system of the type mounting a window covering material for opening and closing traversal of said material along a traverse track:
- a window covering material having a plurality of foldable sections disposed in a generally vertical orientation, at least an edge portion of said material being adapted for traversing said material between opened and closed conditions;
- a traverse track adapted for mounting in an orientation transverse to the vertical; and
- a stress-relieved, adjustable orientation, traversing mounting system for said material, comprising: an edge carrier mounted for traversing movement on said traverse track; an elongated edge stabilizer member mounted along said material edge portion; a pivotal ball detent mechanism mounting said elongated edge stabilizer member to said edge carrier and maintaining said edge portion in a preselected substantially vertical orientation, said ball detent mechanism being oriented for pivotal movement in the plane of said material such that upon application of a torque force having a component above a predetermined threshold value in the plane of said material, said edge stabilizer member pivots in the direction of applied force to permit free traversal of said traverse system along said traverse track without binding; and means for adjusting the orientation of said edge stabilizer member and said edge portion.
- 34. In a window covering system of the type mounting a window covering material for opening and closing traversal of said material along a traverse track:
- a window covering material having a plurality of foldable sections disposed in a generally vertical orientation, at least an edge portion of said material being adapted for traversing said material between opened and closed conditions;
- a traverse track adapted for mounting in an orientation transverse to the vertical; and
- a stress-relieved, traversing mounting system for said material, comprising: an edge carrier mounted for traversing movement on said traverse track; an elongated edge stabilizer member mounted along said material edge portion; and support means mounting said elongated edge stabilizer member to said edge carrier to maintain said edge portion in a preselected substantially vertical orientation, said support means including a mounting bracket having a cone-shaped hole therein having a relatively small end and a relatively large opposite end and having the associated axis thereof oriented generally parallel to the direction of traverse, an L-shaped mounting rod having one leg thereof mounting said elongated edge stabilizer member at the top thereof and the other leg thereof inserted through said hole such that the small end of said hole acts as a pivot point for pivoting said mounting rod in the plane of said material, and means for setting the pivot orientation of said mounting rod to set the vertical orientation of the edge portion of said material;
- whereby application of a torque force having a component above a predetermined threshold value in the plane of said material, pivots said elongated edge stabilizer member in the direction of applied force to permit free traversal of said traverse system along said traverse track without binding.
- 35. In a window covering system of the type mounting a window covering material for opening an closing traversal of said material along a traverse track:
- a window covering material having a plurality of foldable sections disposed in a generally vertical orientation, at least an edge portion of said material being adapted for traversing said material between opened and closed conditions;
- a traverse track adapted for mounting in an orientation transverse to the vertical; and
- a stress-relieved, adjustable orientation, traversing mounting system for said material, comprising: an edge carrier mounted for traversing movement on said traverse track; an elongated edge stabilizer member mounted along said material edge portion; support means substantially rigidly mounting said elongated edge stabilizer member to said edge carrier to maintain said edge portion in a preselected substantially vertical orientation, said support means being mounted so as to overcome said substantially rigid mounting for pivotal movement in the plane of said window covering material such that upon application of a torque force having a component above a predetermined threshold value in the plane of said material said edge stabilizer member pivots in the direction of applied force to permit free traversal of said traverse system along said traverse track without binding; and means for adjusting the orientation of said edge stabilizer member and said edge portion; and wherein
- said traverse track comprises a front wall, a rear wall, and upper and lower horizontal webs joined to said walls; said upper web forms an acute outside angle with said rear wall member; and said vertical covering system further comprises L-shaped bracket means adapted for attachment to a mounting surface such as a wall or ceiling and comprising a horizontal member and a joined vertical member; said horizontal member including a tab extending downwardly at an angle for mating in said horizontal web section and against said rear wall member, and the lower edge of said vertical member being configured for clamping the lower edge of said rear wall member of said track means.
- 36. In a vertical window covering system, a window covering material portion having a plurality of sections disposed in a generally vertical orientation, said portion being adaptable to being traversed between open end closed conditions and having an inherent distortion characteristic causing non-vertical hanging of left and right edge portions thereof in an open or partially open condition, a traverse track adapted to be mounted in a horizontal orientation; a plurality of track mounting means for mounting a plurality of sections of said window covering material intermediate said left and right edge portions thereof for bidirectional traverse relative to said traverse track; first and second edge carrier means mounted to said traverse track with at least one of said carrier means adapted for bidirectional traverse on said track; and edge stabilizer means mounted on each of said carrier means for holding said edge portions of said window covering material in a substantially straight vertical orientation when said material is traversed toward an open condition, including a stabilizer rod means substantially rigidly mounted to said carrier means in an accurate vertical orientation and with a degree of rigidity sufficient to overcome said inherent distortion characteristic, said stabilizer rod means extending at least substantially the entire length of an associated one of said edge portions of said window covering material and being secured thereto at least at a plurality of locations throughout said length.
- 37. The system of claim 36, wherein said window covering material portion comprises an area of prepleated drapery fabric having permanently set pleats of a nature such that the fabric behaves like a tension spring tending to bias pleats toward the folded state and thus causing a distortion characteristic of said right and left edge portions tending to bow inwardly from top to bottom in an open condition of said drape.
- 38. The system of claim 36, wherein said window covering material portion comprises an area of vertically disposed blind slats each mounted by one of said track mounting means to said traverse track and a plurality of string ladders carried thereon at spaced vertical locations and fastened at respective right and left ends to said stabilizer rods, the weight of said string ladders tending to cause said distortion characteristic with ones of said blind slat at right and left edges bowing inwardly from top to bottom.
- 39. The system of claim 36, further comprising a pleat position stabilizing means mounted to each of said plurality of spaced intermediate pleats for stabilizing said pleats in a vertical orientation.
- 40. The system of claim 39, wherein said pleat position stabilizing means comprises a weight fastened to a bottom portion of an associated pleat to bias said pleat to hang vertically.
- 41. The system of claim 39, wherein said pleat position stabilizing means comprises an elongated thin slat fastened to said pleat and extending at least substantially the entire length thereof, said slat being carried on said track mounting means associated with each said intermediate pleat.
- 42. The system of claim 39, wherein said pleat position stabilizing means comprises an elongated thin slat fastened to said pleat and extending at least substantially the entire length thereof and a weight mounted to said slat at a bottom portion thereof, said slat being carried on said track mounting means associated with said pleat.
- 43. The system of claim 37, wherein said stabilizer rod means includes an integral spring flexure portion near a top end thereof adapted to respond to a sidewise force applied toward the bottom portion thereof of a magnitude substantially greater than the spring force of said drapery fabric by flexing and then restoring said stabilizer rod means to a true vertical orientation.
- 44. The system of claim 37, wherein each of said drape edge carrier means and said drape edge stabilizer means together comprise a modular unit; each of said drape edge carrier means defines a horizontal mounting platform for said drape edge stabilizer means; said modular unit including stabilizer rod mounting means for mounting said stabilizer rod means to said mounting platform in an adjustable vertical position an an adjustable angular orientation relative to said mounting platform to enable precise adjustment of said stabilizer rod to extend perpendicular to said mounting platform.
- 45. The system of claim 44, wherein said stabilizer rod means includes an upper rod end having a regular cylindrical shape; and said stabilizer rod mounting means comprises a cylindrical mounting bracket rigidly mounted to a bottom surface of said mounting platform and having a tapered central aperture therein receiving said upper rod end of said stabilizer rod means and a triangular arrangement of set screws extending between an outer cylindrical wall of said bracket and said central aperture adapted for adjustable contact with upper rod end for providing both a vertical adjustment of the position of said upper rod end in said tapered aperture and an angular adjustment of the orientation of said upper rod end relative to said mounting platform.
- 46. The system of claim 44, wherein said stabilizer rod means includes an upper rod end having a regular cylindrical shape; and said stabilizer rod mounting means comprises an aperture defined in said mounting platform and having a tapered wall portion adapted to receive said upper rod end in a variable angular orientation, a mounting collar fastened over said upper rod end on one side of said mounting platform, a compression spring carried over said upper rod end on the other side of said mounting platform, and a spring retaining bracket mounted to said upper rod end to compress said spring between a wall surface of said mounting platform and said retaining bracket, said mounting collar including first adjustment means for adjustably positioning said mounting collar on said upper rod end and second adjustment means for defining an adjustable angular contact relationship between said mounting collar and said mounting platform to establish an initial angular orientation for said mounting collar and said upper rod end, said upper rod end and said collar being deflectable away from said initial orientation and being biased by said compression spring to return to said initial orientation.
- 47. The system of claim 46, wherein said mounting collar has a central aperture receiving said upper rod end, said first adjustment means comprises a horizontally disposed setscrew extending between an outer wall and said aperture for fastening said collar on said upper rod end in an adjustable position, and said second adjustment means comprises a triangular arrangement of set screws extending through said collar parallel to said aperture with screw tips contacting an adjacent surface of said mounting platform to jointly provide said adjustable angular contact relationship between said mounting collar and said mounting platform.
- 48. The system of claim 16 or 17, wherein the spaced support members are wheels.
