Claims
- 1. A flow switch apparatus indicating whether or not fluid is flowing in said apparatus, comprising:
a check valve having an inlet and an outlet, fluid pressure at said inlet being greater than pressure of said fluid at said outlet in a first mode when said valve is open to fluid flow, said valve being closed to flow in a second mode when said outlet pressure is one of equal to and greater than said inlet pressure; a signaling device for detecting whether said valve is in said first or second mode and outputting a corresponding electrical signal; a throttle device in parallel with said check valve by connection across said valve inlet and outlet, said throttle device by-passing a portion of said fluid flow in said first mode, said throttle device permitting pressure equalization at said valve inlet and outlet when said valve switches from said first mode to said second mode.
- 2. A flow switch apparatus as in claim 1, wherein said portion that is by-passed is in a range of approximately 0.1% to 15% of said fluid flow.
- 3. A flow switch apparatus as in claim 1, wherein said signaling device includes at least one sensor to send said inlet and outlet pressures as inputs required to output said signal, said signal being electrical.
- 4. A flow switch apparatus as in claim 3, wherein said at least one sensor is one of a mechanical pressure switch, pressure sensitive transducer, differential pressure mechanical switch, and a differential pressure sensitive transducer.
- 5. A flow switch apparatus as in claim 4, wherein said signaling device connects to said valve inlet and said valve outlet with respective pressure tubes.
- 6. A flow switch apparatus as in claim 5, wherein said signaling device is maintained at a higher temperature than said fluid by location in a higher temperature ambient and by at least one of a length and material of said pressure tubes.
- 7. A flow switch apparatus as in claim 1, wherein said check valve is constructed to operate in said first mode only when said inlet pressures exceeds said outlet pressure by a predetermined value, the signal output from said signaling device changing when said check valve changes from said first mode to said second mode and vice versa.
- 8. A flow switch apparatus as in claim 1, wherein said fluid is a refrigerant at very low temperature, said check valve being in a return refrigerant flow line from an evaporator to a refrigeration unit in a closed refrigeration cycle.
- 9. A flow switch apparatus as in claim 8, wherein said refrigerant is a mixed refrigerant.
- 10. A flow switch apparatus as in claim 2, wherein said throttle device is at least one capillary tube, throttle valve, venturi tube, porous plug, and a plate orifice.
