Claims
- 1. A conferencing network for integrating video and data, comprising:
- a plurality of network ports;
- a plurality of video terminals each associated with one of said network ports for transmitting and receiving real time video information;
- each of said video terminals transmitting and receiving control data for configuring the network and communication data for being transmitted between said network ports;
- switching means for receiving video information on one of said network ports and selectively interconnecting the received video information to one or more of the remaining said network ports in accordance with a predetermined network configuration to provide a video path between two or more of said video terminals;
- control means in data communication with each of said video terminals for receiving control data therefrom and for generating said predetermined network configuration, said control means also in data communication with said switching means for configuring said switching means in accordance with said predetermined network configuration to provide video paths between said network ports and said video terminals in accordance with said predetermined network configuration;
- each of said video terminals having means for transmitting and receiving real time audio information; and
- audio link means for selectively interconnecting said audio means on each of said video terminals between ones of said video terminals interconnected in accordance with said predetermined network configuration.
- 2. The conferencing network of claim 1 wherein said switching means and said control means are each interfaced with said network ports by communication link means, said communication link means comprising:
- a coaxial cable disposed between each of said video terminals and said switching and control means for carrying said transmitted and received video and data by frequency division multiplexing;
- first means for distinguishing between transmitted and received video and data and disposed at each of said video terminals in communication with one end of said coaxial cable;
- second means in communication with the other end of said coaxial cable for distinguishing between transmitted and received video and data; and
- said transmitted and received video interfacing with said switching means and said transmitted and received data interfacing with said control means.
- 3. The network of claim 1 wherein said control means comprises:
- network master means for processing data received from said video terminals and generating configuration data in response to processing of said data, said configuration data containing information for the configuration of said switching means, said network master means generating said network configuration;
- slave means for receiving said configuration data and configuring said switching means in response to receiving said configuration data; and
- data manager means having a plurality of data ports for receiving data from each of said video terminals and said network master means and routing said received data from said video terminals to said network master means and said reconfiguration data from said network master means to said slave means.
- 4. A video conferencing network, comprising:
- a plurality of video ports and data ports;
- a plurality of video terminals each having a unique address for transmitting and receiving audio, video and data;
- switching means for receiving video information from one of a plurality of said video ports and selectively transmitting said received video information to one or more of the remaining of said ports in accordance with a predetermined network configuration;
- data manager means for receiving data at one of a plurality of said data ports, for determining which of the remaining of said data ports the received data is to be transmitted to in accordance with predetermined routing information corresponding to said predetermined network configuration and for transmitting the received data to the determined one of said ports;
- communication link means disposed between each of said video terminals and a select one of said video ports on said switching means and a select one of said data ports on said data manager means;
- slave means for controlling the configuration of said switching means in response to receiving a reconfiguration signal from said data manager means, said slave means in data communication with one of said data ports on said data manager means;
- network master means for controlling the network, said network master means receiving data from said data manager means and transmitting data thereto, said network master means communicating with said video terminals and said slave means, said network master means generating said predetermined network configuration and generating said reconfiguration signal for transmission to said slave means through said data manager means to reconfigure said switching means in accordance with said predetermined network configuration;
- data link means for interfacing between said network master means and one of said data ports on said data manager means; and
- audio networking means for selectively interconnecting the audio portion of said video terminals corresponding to the interconnection of the associated ones of said video terminals in accordance with said predetermined network configuration.
- 5. The network of claim 4 wherein said communication link means comprises:
- a transmission medium associated with one of said video terminals, one of said video ports on said switching means and one of said data ports on said data manager means;
- first encoding means associated with each of said video terminals for receiving video and data from the associated one of said video terminals and encoding it in a predetermined manner for transmission along a first path in said transmission medium, said first encoder means receiving encoded video and data from a second path in said transmission medium and outputting decoded video and data to the associated one of said video terminals; and
- second encoding means for receiving encoded video and data from said first path in said transmission medium and outputting decoded video to said switching means and decoded data to said data manager means, said second encoding means receiving video from said switching means and data from said data manager means and encoding said received video and data in said predetermined manner and transmitting it on said second path in said transmission medium.
- 6. The network of claim 5 wherein said transmission medium includes a third bidirectional path for carrying information not associated with the network, information carried on said third path isolated from information carried on said first and second paths that are associated with the network.
- 7. A video conferencing network having a plurality of network ports for networking video and data therebetween, comprising:
- a local network having local area network terminals associated with the network ports for networking local area network data;
- local area network communication link means for interfacing between each of the network ports and said local area network to allow networking of local area network data between a plurality of said local area network terminals;
- a plurality of video terminals for transmitting and receiving video information and video conferencing data, said video conferencing data comprised of control data and networking data, each of said video terminals disposed at an associated one of the network ports;
- first multiplexing means having links for multiplexing transmitted video and conference data with said local area network data for transmission on said local area communication on said links and for demultiplexing received video and conferencing data from said local area communication link means;
- second multiplexing means associated with each of the network ports and disposed at a select location in the link associated with the network port for multiplexing video and conference data onto said link and for demultiplexing video and conference data from said link;
- switching means for receiving video information from one of the plurality of said second demultiplexing means and selectively transmitting said received video information into one or more of the remaining of said second multiplexing means in accordance with a predetermined network configuration;
- data switching means for receiving conference data from one of the plurality of said second multiplexing means and selectively interconnecting the received conference data to one or more of the remaining of the plurality of said second multiplexing means to provide a conference data path between two or more of said second multiplexing means and the associated ones of said video terminals; and
- control means for interfacing with each of said second multiplexing means for receiving control data therefrom and for transmitting control data thereto for generating said predetermined network configuration and controlling said video and data switching means to provide video and data paths, respectively, in response to data communication between said video terminals and said control means.
- 8. The conferencing network of claim 7 wherein said local area network communication link means comprises a coaxial cable for carrying base band information and a modulated carrier wherein said local area network data is transmitted as a base band information and said video and conference data is transmitted as modulated information about said carrier, said first and second multiplexing means operable to interface with said video and conferencing data modulated on said carrier.
- 9. The conferencing network of claim 8 wherein said first and second demuliplexing means comprise:
- encoding means for encoding received audio and data information as modulated information about said carrier; and
- decoding means for decoding the modulated video and conferencing data information modulated on said carrier.
- 10. The network of claim 7 wherein said control means comprises:
- network master means for receiving and processing control data received from said second multiplexing means and generating said predetermined network configuration in response to processing of said control data, said predetermined network configuration containing information for the configuration of said video and data switching means;
- slave means for interfacing with said network master means and configuring said video and data switching means in response to generation of said network configuration by said network master means; and
- said data switching means comprising data manager means having a plurality of data ports for receiving conference data from each of said second multiplexing means and said network master means and routing said received data from said second multiplexing means to said network match means and said reconfiguration data from said network master means to said slave means.
- 11. The network of claim 7 wherein each of said video terminals is also operable to transmit and receive audio information and further comprising audio network means for providing an audio path between the interconnected ones of said video terminals that are interconnected in accordance with said predetermined network configuration.
- 12. A video conferencing network, comprising:
- a plurality of video ports;
- at least three video terminals coupled to said video ports, wherein each of said video terminals has a unique address for transmitting and receiving video information;
- switching means, coupled to each of said video ports, for receiving video information from one of said video ports and selectively switching said received video information so that said video information is transmitted to one or more of said video ports; and
- means, coupled to said switching means, for controlling status definitions of each of said video terminals during a video conference communication among said video terminals, said controlling means comprising:
- means for defining only one of said video terminals as having a primary status when said one of said video terminals requests a locking of status definitions associated with said video conference;
- means for refraining from changing said primary status definition associated with said primary status video terminal so long as said video conference remains locked;
- means for transmitting video from said primary status video terminal to all of said video terminals except for said primary status video terminal;
- means for defining only one of said video terminals as having a secondary status;
- means for transmitting video from said secondary status video terminal only to said primary status video terminal;
- means for defining all of said video terminals other than said primary and secondary status video terminals as having a ternary status; and
- means for refraining from transmitting video which originates at a ternary status video terminal to any of said video terminals.
- 13. A video conferencing network as claimed in claim 12 additionally comprising an audio switching means coupled to each of said video terminals and to said controlling means, and wherein said controlling means is additionally configured to comprise:
- means for detecting one of the presence and absence of voice signals of said video terminals; and
- means for changing status definitions associated with said video terminals when said video conference is not locked, when absence of a voice signal is detected at said primary status terminal, and when a voice signal is detected at one of said secondary and ternary video terminals.
- 14. A video conferencing network as claimed in claim 13 wherein said changing means further comprises means for swapping status definitions between said primary and secondary video terminals when a voice signal is detected at said secondary video terminal, as defined prior to swapping of status definitions.
- 15. A video conferencing network as claimed in claim 13 wherein said changing means further comprises means for swapping status definitions between one of said ternary video terminals and said secondary video terminal when said voice signal is detected at said one of said ternary video terminals, as defined prior to swapping status definitions.
- 16. A method of controlling the displaying of video on at least three conferee display stations during a video conference communication among said conferee display stations, said method comprising the steps of:
- defining only one of said conferee display stations as having a primary status when said one conferee display station requests a locking of status definitions associated with said video conference;
- refraining from changing said primary status definition association with said primary status conferee display station so long as said video conference remains locked;
- transmitting video from said primary status conferee display station to all of said conferee display stations except for said primary status conferee display station;
- defining only one of said conferee display stations as having a secondary status;
- transmitting video from said secondary status conferee display station only to said primary status conferee display station;
- defining all of said conferee display stations other than said primary and secondary status conferee display stations as having a ternary status; and
- refraining from transmitting video which originated at a ternary status conferee display station to any of said conferee display stations.
- 17. A method as claimed in claim 16 additionally comprising the steps of:
- detecting one of the presence and absence of voice signals at each of said conferee display stations; and
- changing status definitions associated with said video conference when said video conference is not locked, when absence of a voice signal is detected at said primary status conferee display station, and when a voice signal is detected at one of said secondary and ternary conferee display stations.
- 18. A method as claimed in claim 17 wherein said changing step further comprises the step of swapping status definitions between said secondary and primary conferee display stations when a voice signal is detected at said secondary conferee display station, as defined prior to said changing step.
- 19. A method as claimed in claim 17 wherein said changing step comprises the step of swapping status definitions between one of said ternary conferee display stations and said secondary conferee display station when said voice signal is detected at said one of said ternary conferee display stations, as defined prior to said changing step.
