Claims
- 1. A circuit for phase locking an internal timing signal to an external signal, comprising:
- a phase-locked loop including a phase comparator circuit and a voltage controlled oscillator, said phase comparator circuit receiving as inputs a signal derived from said voltage controlled oscillator and a signal derived from said external signal;
- means for comparing the frequency of a reference signal to the frequency of a signal derived from said internal signal, and for generating a steering signal that depends on said comparison;
- means for applying said steering signal to said phase-locked loop;
- said means for comparing frequency comprising a frequency comparison logic circuit that compares counts derived from said reference signal and counts derived from said phase locked loop, and produces said steering signal in response to said count comparison, said steering signal being coupled with said phase comparator to influence operation of said phase locked loop;
- said phase locked loop including a current pump that is coupled to the output of said phase comparator circuit, said steering signal being operative to control the current generated by said current pump; and
- means for deriving an output signal from said phase locked loop.
- 2. The circuit as defined by claim 1, wherein said current pump is operative to integrate the output of said phase comparator circuit.
- 3. The circuit as defined by claim 1, wherein said phase locked loop includes a one-shot circuit coupled between said external signal and said phase comparator circuit, said one-shot circuit being matched to the voltage controlled oscillator of said phase locked loop and being operative to track the timing of said voltage controlled oscillator.
- 4. The circuit as defined by claim 1, wherein said external signal is a sync signal derived from a received television signal.
- 5. The circuit as defined by claim 4, wherein said reference signal is an externally supplied horizontal reference signal.
- 6. A circuit for phase locking an internal timing signal to an external signal, comprising:
- a phase-locked loop including a phase comparator circuit and a voltage controlled oscillator, said phase comparator circuit receiving as inputs a signal derived from said voltage controlled oscillator and a signal derived from said external signal;
- means for comparing the frequency of a reference signal to the frequency of a signal derived from said internal signal, and for generating a steering signal that depends on said comparison;
- means for applying said steering signal to said phase-locked loop;
- said means for comparing frequency comprising a frequency comparison logic circuit that compares counts derived from said reference signal and counts derived from said phase locked loop, and produces said steering signal in response to said count comparison, said steering signal being coupled with said phase comparator to influence operation of said phase locked loop;
- said phase locked loop including a one-shot circuit coupled between said external signal and said phase comparator circuit, said one-shot circuit being matched to the voltage controlled oscillator of said phase locked loop and being operative to track the timing of said voltage controlled oscillator; and
- means for deriving an output signal from said phase locked loop.
- 7. The circuit as defined by claim 6, wherein said external signal is a sync signal derived from a received television signal.
- 8. The circuit as defined by claim 7, wherein said reference signal is an externally supplied horizontal reference signal.
