Claims
- 1. The Diels-Alder addition product of (1) a conjugated diacetylene compound having the formula: ##STR53## wherein: Ar' is a tetravalent aromatic organic radical, the four carbonyl groups being attached directly to separate carbon atoms and each pair of carbonyl groups being attached to the adjacent carbon atoms in Ar' except in the case of Ar' being a naphthalene radical, one or both pairs of the carbonyl groups may be attached to peri-carbon atoms;
- Ar is a divalent aromatic organic radical:
- n is zero or an integer having a value of one to 20;
- R is hydrogen or an organic moiety containing 1 to 21 carbon atoms;
- Z is the structure --CH.dbd.CH--C.tbd.C-- or --C.tbd.C--CH.dbd.CH--;
- and (2) a dienophile containing at least one acceptor moiety having the formula R.degree.C.tbd.C-- wherein R.degree. is as defined above for R and the R.degree.C.tbd.C-- is a non-conjugated acetylenic group, said dienophile being selected from the class consisting of diethynyl benzene, dipropargyl phthalate, 4,4'-diethynyl diphenyloxide, N-(ethynylphenyl) maleimide, dipropargyl maleate, HC.tbd.C--COOCH.sub.2 CH.dbd.CH.sub.2, C.sub.6 H.sub.5 C.tbd.C--COOCH.sub.2 CH.dbd.CH.sub.2, C.sub.6 H.sub.5 C.tbd.COOCH.sub.2 C.tbd.CH, HC.tbd.C--C.sub.6 H.sub.4 OOCC.tbd.CCOOC.sub.6 H.sub.4 C.tbd.CH, H.sub.2 C.dbd.CHC.sub.6 H.sub.4 OOCC.tbd.C--COOC.sub.6 H.sub.4 CH.dbd.CH.sub.2 and ##STR54## wherein: n' is zero or an integer having a value of one to 20; and Ar'" is a trivalent aromatic radical containing 6 to 12 carbon atoms to which the attached pair of carbonyl groups is attached to adjacent or peri carbon atoms in said Ar'" radical.
- 2. The addition product of claim 1, in which each R is H.
- 3. The addition product of claim 1, in which each R is C.sub.6 H.sub.5.
- 4. The addition product of claim 1, in which each R is CH.sub.3.
- 5. The addition product of claim 1, in which n is at least two.
- 6. The addition product of claim 1, in which n is at least three.
- 7. The addition product of claim 5, in which Ar' is a radical selected from the class consisting of: ##STR55##
- 8. The addition product of claim 1, in which Ar' is ##STR56##
- 9. The addition product of claim 1, in which the Ar attached to Z is selected from the class consisting of --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --, --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 -- and --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 SO.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --.
- 10. The addition product of claim 5, in which the Ar attached to Z is --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --.
- 11. The product of claim 1, in which the polyimide portion of said enyne compound is prepared by the reaction of a dianhydride of an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid and a diamine selected from the class consisting of:
- 1,3- and 1,4-(NH.sub.2).sub.2 benzene;
- 2,3-; 2,4-; 2,6- and 3,5-(NH.sub.2).sub.2 -toluene;
- 3,3'-; 4,4'- and 3,4'-methylene dianiline;
- 4,4'-; 3,3'- and 3,4'-oxydianiline;
- 4,4'-; 3,3'- and 3,4'-sulfonyldianiline;
- 1,3-; 1,4- and 1,2-bis(3-aminophenoxy)benzene;
- 1,3- and 1,4-bis(4-aminophenoxy)benzene; and
- H.sub.2 NC.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 SO.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 SO.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 NH.sub.2 in which the respective attachments to a C.sub.6 H.sub.4 ring are meta or para to each other.
- 12. The addition product of claim 11, in which the diamine is a methylene dianiline.
- 13. The addition product of claim 11, in which the diamine is a sulfonyl dianiline.
- 14. The addition product of claim 11, in which the diamine is an oxydianiline.
- 15. The addition product of claim 11, in which the diamine is 2,4-toluene diamine.
- 16. The addition product of claim 11, in which R is H.
- 17. The addition product of claim 11, in which R is C.sub.6 H.sub.5.
- 18. The addition product of claim 1 in which n has a value of one to 10.
- 19. The addition product of claim 5 in which n has a value of one to 10.
- 20. The addition product of claim 7 in which n has a value of one to 10.
- 21. The addition product of claim 11 in which n has a value of one to 10.
- 22. The Diels-Alder addition product of a composition of matter comprising a polyimide of the formula: ##STR57## and a dienophile of the formula: ##STR58## wherein: Ar' is a tetravalent aromatic radical, the four carbonyl groups being attached directly to separate carbon atoms and each pair of carbonyl groups being attached to adjacent carbon atoms in Ar' except in the case of Ar' being a naphthalene radical, one or both pairs of the carbonyl groups may be attached to peri-carbon atoms;
- Ar is a divalent aromatic radical;
- R is hydrogen or an organic moiety containing 1 to 21 carbon atoms;
- n is zero or an integer having a value of one to 20;
- R.degree. has the same definition as R;
- n' is zero or an integer having a value of one to 20;
- Ar'" is a trivalent aromatic radical containing 6 to 12 carbon atoms to which the attached pair of carbonyl groups is attached to adjacent or peri carbon atoms in said Ar'" radical; and
- Z is the structure --CH.dbd.CH--C.tbd.C-- or --C.tbd.C--CH.dbd.CH-- the addition being primarily between the enyne groups and the acetylenic groups of the dienophile.
