Claims
- 1. A method of evidencing postage payment, the method comprising the steps of:requesting from a local postage printing system to a remote data metering center for the generation of postage evidencing information, the request including a postage amount to be printed on a mailpiece; determining at the remote data metering center a postal origin corresponding to the request for postage evidencing information; first accounting at the remote data metering center for the postage amount in a general account corresponding to the local postage printing system; second accounting at the remote data metering center for the postage amount in a payment account corresponding to the determined postal origin; generating postage evidencing information in response to the request; sending the postage evidencing information to the local postage printing system; and printing the postage evidencing information on the mailpiece.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the postage evidencing information includes the determined postal origin.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of printing the postage evidencing information includes printing the determined postal origin on the mailpiece.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the steps of first accounting and second accounting comprise the steps of:debiting the postage amount from total funds available for the general account; and crediting the postage amount to the determined postal origin account.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the steps of first accounting and second accounting comprise the steps of:charging the postage amount to the general account; and crediting the postage amount to the determined postal origin account.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of determining the postal origin comprises the step of:receiving a desired postal origin from the local postage printing system.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of generating postage evidencing information comprises the step of:generating a digital token, the digital token being encrypted information including the postage amount, associated with the mailpiece.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein the encrypted information further includes at least part of the destination address of the mailpiece and the determined postal origin.
- 9. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of determining the postal origin comprises the steps of:receiving an originating communication from the local postage printing system requesting the postage evidencing information; obtaining an origin identifier of the originating communication; obtaining an address corresponding to the origin identifier; and determining the postal origin by obtaining postal code information for the address.
- 10. The method of claim 9 comprising the further step of:obtaining a meter license from the USPS based on the postal code information.
- 11. The method of claim 9 wherein the communication is a phone call and the identifier is a phone number and the step of obtaining the origin identifier comprises using caller ID to obtain a phone number from which the local postage printing system initiated the request for postage evidencing information.
- 12. The method of claim 9 wherein the communication is a network and the identifier is a network address.
- 13. A postage metering system comprising:a plurality of local postage printing systems, each of said local postage printing systems including a general purpose processor with an unsecured printer coupled thereto; a remote data metering center communicatively coupled to the plurality of local postage printing systems, said remote data metering center including a second processor, accounting means, value storage means, encryption means and means for determining postal origin corresponding to the request for postage evidencing information, said value storage means including a general account for each of the local postage printing systems and a payment account corresponding to each determined postal origin, wherein the remote data metering center is authorized to dispense evidence of postage payment for a plurality of postal origins.
- 14. The system of claim 13 wherein the means for determining postal origin comprises means for obtaining an address corresponding to an origin identifier associated with the request for postage evidencing information and determining the postal origin by obtaining postal code information for the address.
- 15. The system of claim 13 wherein each local postage printing system has the capability to request and obtain from the remote data metering center the evidence of postage payment to be printed on a mailpiece by the unsecure printer, the request including postage amount and destination address information.
- 16. The system of claim 15 wherein, for each request for evidence of postage payment, the remote data metering center determines the postal origin corresponding to said each request, generates the evidence of postage payment, debits the general account for the local postage printing system making said each request, and credits the payment account corresponding to the determined postal origin.
- 17. The system of claim 15 wherein, for each request for evidence of postage payment, the remote data metering center determines the postal origin corresponding to said each request, generates the evidence of postage payment, credits the general account for the local postage printing system making said each request, and credits the payment account corresponding to the determined postal origin.

This is a continuation-in-part application of U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60/049,518, filed Jun. 13, 1997, now abandoned, and assigned to the assignee of the present invention.
