Claims
- 1. A device for testing hardware and software operation of a system under test, comprising:
- first means for receiving a command to capture visual display signals representative of an image on a visual display device;
- second means, responsive to the first means and coupled to the visual display device, for capturing from the visual display device said visual display signal representative of said image on said visual display device;
- third means, responsive to said second means, for comparing said visual display signals representative of said image on said visual display device captured by the second means with at least one previously captured visual display signal previously captured by the device; and
- fourth means, responsive to said third means, for indicating the results of said comparison performed by the third means.
- 2. The device of claim 1, wherein said firs means comprises an emulator routine.
- 3. The device of claim 1, wherein said second means comprises a linear feedback shift register.
- 4. The device of claim 1, wherein said second means includes a hardware state machine which is controlled by vertical synchronizing and horizontal synchronizing signals.
- 5. The device of claim 1, wherein said third means comprises a microprocessor.
- 6. The device of claim 1, wherein said fourth mean comprises a universal asynchronous receiver transmitter (UART) for sending said result of said comparison to a remote device.
- 7. The device of claim 1, wherein said visual display device is a video graphics array.
- 8. A device for testing hardware and software operation of a system under test, comprising:
- first means for receiving a first command from a remote device to capture visual display signals representative of a first image on a visual display device;
- second means, responsive to the first means and coupled to the visual display device, for capturing said visual display signals from the visual display device;
- third means for receiving a second command from said remote device to capture new visual display signals representative of a second image on said visual display device;
- fourth means, responsive to the third means and coupled to the visual display device, for capturing said new visual display signals from the visual display device;
- fifth means, responsive to said second and said fourth means, for comparing said visual display signals with said new visual display signals; and
- sixth means, responsive to said fifth means, for indicating the results of said comparison to said remote device.
- 9. The device according to claim 8, wherein said second means comprises means for sending said visual display signals captured by the second means to said remote device; and, wherein said third means comprises means for receiving said visual display signals from said remote device.
- 10. The device of claim 8, wherein said second means comprises means for converting said visual display signals into a compact format, and said fourth means comprises said means for converting said new visual display signals into the compact format.
- 11. The device of claim 8, wherein said second and fourth means comprise means for selecting a portion of said visual display signals and said new visual display signals, respectively, which is representative of at least one plane and wherein said means for selecting a portion of said visual display signals and said new visual display signals includes a multiplexer.
- 12. The device of claim 8, further comprising means for receiving input data from said remote device, and means for sending said input data to the system under test.
- 13. The device of claim 12, wherein said means for sending said input data comprises means to emulate an input device.
- 14. The device of claim 8, wherein said visual display device is a video graphics array.
- 15. A method for testing software and hardware operation of a system under test, comprising the steps of:
- (1) storing at least one previously generated compact representation of previously captured visual display signals;
- (2) capturing visual display signals from a visual display device;
- (3) converting the visual display signals captured in step (2) to produce a compact representation of said visual display signals;
- (4) comparing said compact representation of step (2) with said at least one previously generated compact representation of step (1); and,
- (5) generating a signal indicating identity or non-identity of said comparison of step (4).
- 16. The method of claim 15, further comprising the step of emulating an input device to produce input to the system under test.
- 17. The method of claim 15, wherein said step (3) comprises the step of shifting said visual display signals through a linear feedback shift register controlled by a hardware state machine.
- 18. The method of claim 17, wherein said step (2) further comprises the step of using a Video Graphics Array as said visual display device.
- 19. A method for testing hardware and software operation of a system under test, comprising the steps of:
- (1) capturing first visual display signals, representative of a first image, from a visual display device;
- (2) converting the visual display signals captured in step (1) to produce at least one compact representation of said first visual display signals;
- (3) sending said at least one compact representation produced in step (2) to a remote device;
- (4) capturing second visual display signals, representative of a second image, from a visual display device;
- (5) generating a second compact representation from said second visual display signals;
- (6) comparing said at least one compact representation of step (2) with said second compact representation of step (5); and
- (7) generating a signal indicating identity or non-identity of said comparison of step (6).
