Claims
- 1. A pump for pumping fluids from a fluid source to a fluid sink comprising
- a housing defining an elongate cavity therein, with an opening on one side of the housing adjacent to and in communication with one end of the cavity, the other end being closed,
- a resilient sheet of material disposed over the opening in the housing, said sheet including an aperture positioned in alignment with the cavity at said one end thereof,
- an elongate shaft slidably disposed in the aperture so that one end of the shaft extends into the cavity and the other end extends out of the housing, said aperture having substantially the same cross-sectional shape as that of the shaft, and the same cross-sectional dimensions or smaller,
- inlet means for conveying fluid from the fluid source into the cavity when a negative pressure is produced therein,
- outlet means for carrying fluid from the cavity to the fluid sink when a positive pressure is produced in the cavity, and
- actuation means for causing the shaft to reciprocate longitudinally in the cavity, sliding back and forth in the aperture, to alternately produce a negative pressure and positive pressure in the cavity, wherein the actuation means comprises elongate drive means attached to the end of the shaft outside the housing and a rotatable wheel oriented to rotate about an axis substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the elongate drive means and the shaft which, when rotated, engages the drive means along the length thereof to cause the drive means and thus the shaft to move longitudinally.
- 2. The pump of claim 1 wherein the elongate drive means comprises an elongate drive shaft having a notch disposed on a bottom side thereof, and wherein the elongate drive means further comprises a secondary drive having a tab extending upwardly from a forward end of the secondary drive for mechanically engaging with the notch in the elongate drive such that movement of the secondary drive produces like movement in the elongate drive shaft.
- 3. The pump of claim 2 wherein the rotatable wheel is mechanically coupled to the secondary drive such that rotation of the wheel causes a longitudinally reciprocating motion in the secondary drive to thereby engage and move the elongate drive means.
- 4. The pump of claim 1 further comprising a rotation means mechanically coupled to the rotatable wheel for rotating the wheel.
- 5. The pump of claim 4 wherein the rotation means comprises a bidirectional motor such that, depending on the direction of rotation of the motor, the wheel rotates so as to move the drive shaft back or forth.
- 6. The pump of claim 1 wherein the elongate drive means comprises a drive shaft having teeth spacedly disposed along the drive shaft, and wherein the rotatable wheel has a circumference with teeth disposed therearound, the teeth being spaced for engagement with the teeth along the drive shaft and being engaged with the teeth of the drive shaft such that rotary movement of the wheel is converted into longitudinal movement of the drive shaft.
- 7. The pump of claim 1 wherein the actuation means comprises:
- elongate drive means pivotally connected at a first end to the end of the shaft outside the housing;
- a substantially L-shaped rotatable crank pivotally connected at one end to a second end of the drive means and at the other end to means for rotating the crank, so that when the crank is rotated, the drive means and thus the shaft are caused to move longitudinally in a reciprocal fashion.
- 8. A pump for pumping fluids from a fluid source to a fluid sink, comprising:
- a housing defining an elongate cavity therein and an opening on one end thereof;
- a resilient sheet of material positioned proximate said opening, said sheet defining an aperture therein;
- an elongate shaft slidably disposed in said aperture having a first end extending into said cavity and a second end extending out of said housing, and having a cross-section of substantially the same shape and size as said aperture;
- inlet means for conveying fluid from a fluid source into said cavity when a negative pressure is produced therein;
- outlet means for carrying fluid from said cavity to a fluid sink when a positive pressure is produced in said cavity;
- elongate drive means associated with said shaft outside the housing for moving said shaft in a longitudinal direction; and
- reciprocating means engaging said elongate drive means for reciprocating said elongate drive means, the elongate drive means comprising an elongate drive shaft having a notch disposed on a bottom side thereof, and the elongate drive means further comprising a secondary drive having a tab extending upwardly from a forward end of the secondary drive for mechanically engaging with the notch in the elongate drive such that movement of the secondary drive produces like movement in the elongate drive shaft.
