Claims
- 1. A wall panel system comprising a vertically extending support wall, first rails and second rails, one of said first and second rails comprising a plurality of horizontally extending vertically spaced positioning rails mounted on said support wall, said rails providing horizontally extending alignment means, a plurality of individual panels engaging said alignment means of associated horizontally extending positioning rails and being positioned thereby in horizontally aligned courses of panels, adhesive bonding said panel to said support wall, the vertical spacing between said horizontally extending positioning rails operating to vertically position each course with respect to the next adjacent course to form a uniform pattern of panels providing a finished panel wall surface, said horizontally extending positioning rails providing vertically spaced upper and lower parallel lateral walls, the upper of said lateral walls providing said horizontally extending alignment means, the other of said first and second rails comprising a plurality of vertically extending positioning rails located along vertical joints between adjacent panels in said courses, said vertically extending positioning rails having vertically extending alignment means engaging adjacent edges of panels along said vertical joints, said positioning rails having base portions disposed against said support wall with said alignment means projecting from said base portions engaging associated ones of said panels, indexing means associated with said first and second rails, said indexing means including a notch in said base portion of said first rail for receiving an end of said base portion of said second rail, said second rail also having said alignment means extending beyond said end of said base portion of said second rail for overlying engagement with the base portion of said first rail, and battens mounted on said lateral walls, said battens providing trim between panels within one course of panels and between the adjacent course of panels.
- 2. A wall panel system as set forth in claim 1, wherein said battens provide a tongue extending between said spaced lateral walls of the associated positioning rails to mount said battens on said associated positioning rail.
- 3. A wall panel system as set forth in claim 2, wherein said battens cover and conceal the edges of adjacent panels.
- 4. A wall panel system as set forth in claim 1, wherein said first rails comprise said horizontally extending positioning rails and said second rails comprise said vertically extending positioning rails, and battens are also mounted on said vertically extending positioning rails.
- 5. A wall panel system as set forth in claim 1, wherein said panel system extends past a corner, and a corner trim strip is mounted along said corner to provide a finished appearance at said corner.
- 6. A wall panel system as set forth in claim 5, wherein said corner is an inside corner, and said trim strip is shaped to provide a finished appearance along said inside corner.
- 7. A wall panel system as set forth in claim 5, wherein said corner is an outside corner, and said trim strip is shaped to provide a finished appearance along said outside corner.
- 8. A wall panel system as set forth in claim 1, wherein said panel system provides edges, and edge trim strips are mounted along said edges to provide a finished edge appearance.
- 9. A wall panel system comprising a vertically extending support wall, a plurality of horizontally extending vertically spaced support rails mounted on said support wall, courses of individual panels mounted between adjacent support rails, said panels having lower edges and said support rails providing horizontally extending lateral wall means engaging the lower edges of said panels of an associated course to establish the horizontal alignment of each panel in said associated course, and said lateral wall means providing a rigid wall having a vertically extending rib engaging a lower extremity of the panel edge at a location spaced from the rigid wall, said rib vertically positioning the panels of the courses above said rib, said rib supportingly engaging the lower extremities of said panel edges and being shaped to allow penetration into the engaged edges of said panels when said panels expand toward the spaced wall due to changes in environmental humidity and temperature.
- 10. A wall panel as set forth in claim 9, wherein a horizontal batten is mounted on each support rail to provide a finished trim along the point between adjacent courses.
- 11. A wall panel system as set forth in claim 10, wherein said lateral wall means includes vertically spaced and parallel lateral walls cooperating to define a channel therebetween, and said batten provides a tongue extending into said channels to mount said batten on the associated support rail.
- 12. A wall panel system as set forth in claim 11, wherein said batten extends past the adjacent edges of adjacent courses and conceals such edges from view.
- 13. A wall panel system as set forth in claim 12, wherein said batten provides a substantially planar face portion having in-turned edges positioned to engage the face of adjacent panels.
- 14. A wall panel system as set forth in claim 12, wherein said battens provide a face portion having rounded corners to provide a smooth finished appearance.
- 15. A wall panel system as set forth in claim 9, wherein an interlocking joint is provided between adjacent panels in said courses, and spacer clips are provided along said joints to establish a uniform spacing between adjacent panels in said courses.
- 16. A wall panel system as set forth in claim 9, wherein vertically extending support rails similar to said horizontally extending support rails are positioned along vertically extending joints between adjacent panels of said courses, and vertically extending battens are mounted on said vertically extending support rails.
- 17. A wall panel system as set forth in claim 16, wherein said support rails have base portions positioned against said support wall, said base portions of said horizontally extending support rails and said vertically extending support rails providing indexing means which inter-fit to accurately position and space at least some of said support rails with respect to others of said support rails.
- 18. A wall panel system as set forth in claim 17, wherein said indexing means includes notches in said base portions of said horizontally extending support rails which receive the ends of said base portions of said vertically extending support rails to accurately space said vertically extending support rails.
- 19. A wall panel system as set forth in claim 16, wherein corner trim members are positioned at an intersection of said panels to provide a finished appearance at said intersection.
- 20. A wall panel system comprising a vertically extending support wall, a plurality of horizontally extending vertically spaced positioning rails mounted on said support wall, said rails providing horizontally extending alignment means, and a plurality of individual panels engaging said alignment means of associated horizontally extending positioning rails and being positioned thereby in horizontally aligned courses of panels, adhesive bonding said panel to said support wall, the vertical spacing between said horizontally extending positioning rails operating to vertically position each course with respect to the next adjacent course to form a uniform pattern of panels providing a finished wall surface, vertically extending positioning rails located along vertical joints between adjacent panels in said courses, said vertically extending positioning rails having vertically extending alignment means engaging adjacent edges of panels along said vertical joints, said positioning rails having base portions disposed against said support wall with said alignment means projecting from said base portions engaging associated ones of said panels, indexing means associated with said positioning rails which inter-fit to accurately position and space at least some of said vertically and horizontally extending positioning rails, said indexing means including a notch in said base portion of one of said horizontally or vertically extending positioning rails for receiving an end of said base portion of the other of said positioning rails, the other of said positioning rails also having said alignment means extending beyond said end of said base portion for overlying engagement with the notched base portion.
- 21. A wall panel system as set forth in claim 20, wherein said horizontally and vertically extending alignment means comprise horizontally and vertically extending wall means, and said wall means extend beyond said end of said base portion in overlying engagement with the notched base portion.
- 22. A wall panel system as set forth in claim 21, wherein said wall means comprise a pair of spaced walls for providing alignment of said panels and for supporting battens extending between horizontal courses of panels and vertical joints between adjacent panels in said courses.
- 23. A wall panel system as set forth in claim 22, wherein said horizontally extending positioning rail base portion includes said notch and said vertically extending positioning rail base portion has said alignment means extending beyond the end thereof.
- 24. A wall panel system comprising a vertically extending support wall supporting horizontally extending courses and vertically extending rows of panels, said panels having peripheral panel edges and being arranged in adjacent relationship along horizontally and vertically extending joints between adjacent panel edges, first and second support rails mounted on said wall along said joints to provide horizontal and vertical alignment of the panels, each of said support rails including a base portion extending along said wall below said panels and alignment means projecting from said base portion into said joint between adjacent panel edges for positioning adjacent panel edges to provide the horizontal and vertical alignment of the panels, said alignment means including wall means extending along said horizontal and vertical joints, indexing means associated with said support rails to accurately position and space said support rails, said indexing means including a notch in said base portion of said first support rail for receiving an end of said base portion of said second support rail, said wall means of said second support rail extending beyond said end of said base portion of said second support rail for overlying engagement with said base portion of said first support rail forming a co-planar relationship between the first and second rails.
- 25. A wall panel system as in claim 24, wherein said wall means support battens extending along said horizontal and vertical joints, said wall means of said second support rail providing support for the batten portion adjacent the indexing means.
- 26. A wall panel system as in claim 25, wherein said wall means comprise a pair of spaced walls for providing alignment of said panels and for mounting said battens.
