Claims
- 1. A system for indicating to the pilot of an aircraft in a dive the altitude at which leveling off must be initiated to avoid descending below a predetermined altitude, comprising:
- means responsive to the descent rate, and descent angle of the aircraft for determining the minimum altitude at which leveling off must be initiated to avoid descending below the predetermined altitude; and
- means responsive to the altitude of the aircraft and to said determining means for providing a warning to the pilot when leveling off must be initiated.
- 2. A system as indicated in claim 1 wherein said descent rate and descent angle responsive means includes means responsive to the barometric descent rate of the aircraft.
- 3. A system as recited in claim 1 wherein said descent rate and descent angle responsive means includes means responsive to the pitch angle of the aircraft.
- 4. A system as recited in claim 1 wherein said means responsive to the altitude of the aircraft includes means responsive to the altitude above ground of the aircraft.
- 5. A system for indicating to the pilot of an aircraft in a dive the altitude at which leveling off must be initiated to avoid descending below a predetermined altitude, comprising:
- means for providing a signal representative of the altitude of the aircraft;
- means for providing a signal representative of the descent angle of the aircraft;
- means for providing a signal representative of the descent rate of the aircraft;
- means responsive to the descent angle and the descent rate for determining the altitude loss of the aircraft after leveling off of the aircraft has been initiated based on the descent angle and descent rate signals; and
- means responsive to the altitude signal and to the altitude loss determining means for generating a warning if the altitude loss is excessive relative to the radio altitude.
- 6. A system as recited in claim 5 further including means for setting a predetermined minimum altitude, wherein said warning generating means is further responsive to said minimum altitude setting means for altering the altitude at which the warning is generated.
- 7. A system as recited in claim 5 wherein said altitude signal providing means includes means for providing a signal representative of the altitude of the aircraft above ground.
- 8. A system as recited in claim 7 wherein said means for providing a signal representative of the altitude of the aircraft above ground includes a radio altimeter.
- 9. A system as recited in claim 5 wherein said means for providing a signal representative of the descent angle of the aircraft includes means for providing a signal representative of the pitch angle the aircraft.
- 10. A system as recited in claim 5 wherein said means for providing a signal representative of the descent rate of the aircraft includes means for providing a signal representative of the barometric descent rate of the aircraft.
- 11. A system as recited in claim 5 further including means responsive to the speed of the aircraft for enabling the generation of a warning only when the speed of the aircraft exceeds a predetermined speed.
- 12. A system as recited in claim 11 wherein said speed signal providing means includes an airspeed indicator, and said enabling means includes means for enabling the generation of a warning only when the airspeed of the aircraft exceeds a predetermined airspeed.
- 13. A system as recited in claim 12 wherein said predetermined airspeed is approximately 300 knots.
- 14. A system as recited in claim 5 further including means for providing a signal representative of the airspeed of the aircraft, wherein said warning generating means is further responsive to the airspeed of the aircraft for generating the warning.
- 15. A system as recited in claim 5 wherein said warning generating means further includes means for generating a specific voice warning.
- 16. A warning system as recited in claim 5 wherein said altitude loss is a function of the normal acceleration of the aircraft during leveling off, and wherein said determining means includes means for determining the altitude loss for a predetermined normal acceleration.
- 17. A system for indicating to the pilot of an aircraft in a dive the altitude at which leveling off must be initiated to avoid descending below a predetermined altitude, comprising:
- a source of signals representative of the descent rate, roll angle and descent angle of an aircraft; and
- means responsive to said descent rate, roll angle and descent angle signals of the aircraft for determining the minimum altitude at which leveling off must be initiated to avoid descending below the predetermined altitude.
- 18. A system for indicating to the pilot of an aircraft in a dive the altitude at which leveling off must be initiated to avoid descending below a predetermined altitude, comprising:
- means responsive to the descent rate, roll angle and descent angle of the aircraft for determining the minimum altitude at which leveling off must be initiated to avoid descending below the predetermined altitude; and
- means responsive to the altitude of the aircraft and to said determining means for providing a warning to the pilot when leveling off must be initiated.
- 19. A system as indicated in claim 18 wherein said descent rate and descent angle responsive means includes means responsive to the barometric descent rate of the aircraft.
- 20. A system as recited in claim 18 wherein said descent rate and descent angle responsive means includes means responsive to the pitch angle of the aircraft.
- 21. A system as recited in claim 18 wherein said means responsive to the altitude of the aircraft includes means responsive to the altitude above ground of the aircraft.
- 22. A system for indicating to the pilot of an aircraft in a dive the altitude at which leveling off must be initiated to avoid descending below a predetermined altitude, comprising:
- means for providing a signal representative of the altitude above ground of the aircraft;
- means for providing a signal representative of the descent angle of the aircraft;
- means for providing a signal representative of the descent rate of the aircraft;
- means for providing a signal representative of the roll angle of the aircraft;
- means responsive to the descent angle, roll angle and the descent rate for determining the altitude loss of the aircraft during leveling off based on the descent angle, initial roll angle and descent rate signals; and
- means responsive to the altitude signal and to the altitude loss determining means for generating a warning if the altitude loss is excessive relative to the altitude above ground.
- 23. A system as recited in claim 22 further including means for setting a predetermined minimum altitude, wherein said warning generating means is further responsive to said minimum altitude setting means for altering the altitude at which the warning is generated.
- 24. A system as recited in claim 22 wherein said altitude signal providing means includes means for providing a signal representative of the altitude of the aircraft above ground.
- 25. A system as recited in claim 24 wherein said means for providing a signal representative of the altitude of the aircraft above ground includes a radio altimeter.
- 26. A system as recited in claim 22 wherein said means for providing a signal representative of the descent angle of the aircraft includes means for providing a signal representative of the pitch angle of the aircraft.
- 27. A system as recited in claim 22 wherein said means for providing a signal representative of the descent rate of the aircraft includes means for providing a signal representative of the barometric descent rate of the aircraft.
- 28. A system as recited in claim 22 further including means responsive to the speed of the aircraft for enabling the generation of a warning only when the speed of the aircraft exceeds a predetermined speed.
- 29. A system as recited in claim 28 wherein said speed signal providing means includes an airspeed indicator, and said enabling means includes means for enabling the generation of a warning only when the airspeed of the aircraft exceeds a predetermined airspeed.
- 30. A system as recited in claim 29 wherein said predetermined airspeed is approximately 300 knots.
- 31. A system as recited in claim 22 further including means for providing a signal representative of the airspeed of the aircraft, wherein said warning generating means is further responsive to the airspeed of the aircraft for generating the warning.
- 32. A system as recited in claim 22 wherein said warning generating means further includes means for generating a specific voice warning.
- 33. A warning system as recited in claim 22 wherein said altitude loss is a function of the normal acceleration of the aircraft during leveling off, and wherein said determining means includes means for determining the altitude loss for a predetermined normal acceleration.
- 34. A system for indicating to the pilot of an aircraft in a dive the altitude at which leveling off must be initiated to avoid descending below a predetermined altitude, comprising:
- a source of signals representative of the descent rate, roll angle and descent angle of an aircraft; and
- means responsive to said descent rate, roll angle and descent angle signals of the aircraft for determining the minimum altitude at which leveling off must be initiated to avoid descending below the predetermined altitude according to the following relationship: ##EQU9## wherein: H.sub.w =minimum altitude at which leveling off from a dive must be initiated
- H.sub.b =descent rate of the aircraft
- a.sub.n =the normal acceleration of the aircraft
- .theta.=descent angle
- MDA=minimum descent altitude.
- 35. A system for indicating to the pilot of an aircraft in a dive the altitude at which leveling off must be initiated to avoid descending below a predetermined altitude, comprising:
- a source of signals representative of the descent rate, roll angle and descent angle of an aircraft;
- means responsive to said roll angle signal for determining the time for an aircraft to level off after a roll; and
- means responsive to said roll time determining means, said descent rate and said descent angle signals of the aircraft for determining the minimum altitude at which recovery must be initiated to avoid descending below the predetermined altitude according to the following relationship: ##EQU10## wherein: H.sub.w =minimum altitude at which minimum recovery from a dive must be initiated
- H.sub.b =descent rate of the aircraft
- a.sub.n =the normal acceleration of the aircraft
- .theta.=descent angle
- t.sub..phi. =roll time for the aircraft to level off after a roll
- MDA=minimum descent altitude.
- 36. A system as recited in claim 35 wherein said roll time, t.sub..phi., is determined according to the following relationship:
- t.sub..phi. =.phi./.phi.
- wherein:
- t.sub..phi. =time for the aircraft to return to a wings level attitude
- .phi.=roll angle of the aircraft
- .phi.=maximum roll rate for an aircraft
- 37. A system as recited in claim 35 wherein said roll time t.sub..phi. is determined according to the following relationship
- t.sub..phi. =(.phi.-45.degree.)/.phi.
- wherein:
- t.sub..phi. =time for the aircraft to return to a roll angle of 45.degree.
- .phi.=roll angle of the aircraft
- .phi.=maximum roll rate for an aircraft.
