Claims
- 1. A cutter disk for use in waste material shredding apparatus, comprising a disk having an axis of rotation, said disk having an outer peripheral surface which is concentric with said axis of rotation, said disk having a plurality of pairs of protrusions with each pair being formed at a regular spacing around said outer peripheral surface, each of said pair comprising a cutter tooth and a chip clearance protrusion leading the cutter tooth of that pair with respect to the direction of rotation of said disk, each of said cutter teeth and each of said chip clearance protrusions having an outermost boundary which is disposed radially outwardly substantially the same distance from said peripheral surface, each of said cutter teeth having a tip portion formed with a sharp cutting edge which is aligned substantially parallel to said axis of said disk, each of said chip clearance protrusions having a substantially trapezoidal shape with three sides, one of said three sides constituting a leading face which extends outwardly from said peripheral surface, another of said three sides constituting a trailing face which extends outwardly relative to said peripheral surface, said leading face and said trailing face each having outer terminating ends, and the third of said three sides constituting an outer face which extends between said outer terminating ends of said leading face and said trailing face, said leading face leading said chip clearance protrusion with respect to the direction of rotation of the disk, said leading face of said chip clearance protrusion having an external surface disposed at an external obtuse angle relative to a leading portion of a tangential line which is tangential to said peripheral surface where said leading face intersects said peripheral surface.
- 2. A cutter disk for use in waste material shredding apparatus, comprising a disk having an outer peripheral surface which is concentric with its axis of rotation, said disk having a plurality of pairs of protrusions protruding from said peripheral surface, each of said pairs of protrusions being spaced from one another, said peripheral surface having external peripheral surface portions disposed in said space between said pairs of protrusions, each of said pairs comprising a cutter tooth and a chip clearance protrusion leading the cutter tooth of that pair with respect to the direction of rotation of said disk, each of said cutter teeth having an outermost tip portion formed with a sharp cutting edge, each of said chip clearance protrusions having an outermost blunt surface, said outermost tip portion defining the outermost radial boundary of said cutter teeth, and said outermost blunt surface defining the outermost radial boundary of said chip clearance protrusions, the radial distance between said outermost radial boundary of said cutter teeth and the axis of rotation of the disk being substantially equal to the radial distance between said outermost radial boundary of said blunt surface of said chip clearance protrusion and the axis of rotation of the disk, each chip clearance protrusion having an external leading face extending between said blunt surface and a juxtaposed external peripheral surface portion, said external leading face being a planar sloping face disposed at an external obtuse angle relative to a leading portion of a tangential line which is tangential to said juxtaposed external peripheral surface portion where said external leading face intersects said juxtaposed external peripheral surface portion.
- 3. A cutter disk for use in waste material shredding apparatus, comprising a disk having an outer peripheral surface which is concentric with its axis of rotation, said disk having a plurality of pairs of protrusions protruding from said peripheral surface, each of said pair comprising a cutter tooth and a chip clearance protrusion leading the cutter tooth of that pair with respect to the direction of rotation of said disk, each of said cutter teeth having an outermost tip portion formed with a sharp cutting edge, each of said chip clearance protrusions having an outermost blunt surface, said outermost tip portion defining the outermost radial boundary of said cutter teeth and said outermost blunt surface defining the outermost radial boundary of said chip clearance protrusions, the radial distance between said outermost radial boundary of said cutter teeth and the axis of rotation of the disk being substantially equal to the radial distance between said outermost radial boundary of said blunt surface of each chip clearance protrusion and the axis of rotation of the disk, said blunt surface of each chip clearance protrusion having a leading edge and a trailing edge, said leading edge and trailing edge being equally spaced from said axis of rotation, each chip clearance protrusion having an external sloping leading face extending between said leading edge and said peripheral surface and forming an external obtuse angle relative to a leading portion of a tangential line which is tangential to said peripheral surface where said external sloping leading face intersects said peripheral surface.
- 4. A cutter disk for use in waste material shredding apparatus, comprising a disk having an outer peripheral surface which is concentric with its axis of rotation, said disk having a plurality of pairs of protrusions comprising a cutter tooth and a chip clearance protrusion leading the cutter tooth of that pair with respect to the direction of rotation of said disk, each of said cutter teeth having an outermost tip portion formed with a sharp cutting edge, each of said chip clearance protrusions having an outermost blunt surface, said outermost tip portion defining the outermost radial boundary of said cutter teeth and said outermost blunt surface defining the outermost radial boundary of said chip clearance protrusions, the radial distance between said outermost radial boundary of said cutter teeth and the axis of rotation of the cutter disk being substantially equal to the radial distance between said outermost radial boundary of said blunt surface of said chip clearance protrusions and the axis of rotation of the disk, said blunt surface of each chip clearance protrusion having a leading edge and a trailing edge, said leading edge and said trailing edge defining said outermost radial boundary of each chip clearance protrusion, each chip clearance protrusion having an external sloping leading face extending between said leading edge and said peripheral surface and forming an external obtuse angle relative to a leading portion of a tangential line which is tangential to said peripheral surface where said external sloping leading face intersects said peripheral surface.
- 5. A cutter disk for use in waste material shredding apparatus, comprising a disk having an outer peripheral surface which is concentric with its axis of rotation, said disk having a plurality of pairs of protrusions protruding from said peripheral surface, each of said pairs comprising a cutter tooth and a chip clearance protrusion leading the cutter tooth of that pair with respect to the direction of rotation of said disk, each of said cutter teeth having an outermost tip portion formed with a sharp cutting edge, each of said chip clearance protusions having an outermost blunt surface, said outermost tip portion defining the outermost radial boundary of said cutter teeth and said outermost blunt surface defining the outermost radial boundary of said chip clearance protrusions, the radial distance between said outermost radial boundary of said cutter teeth and the axis of rotation of the disk being substantially equal to the radial distance between said outermost radial boundary of said blunt surface of said chip clearance protrusions and the axis of rotation of the disk, each chip clearance protrusion having a substantially flat, planar, external, leading face and a substantially flat, planar trailing face, said blunt surface having a leading edge and a trailing edge, said leading face extending between said leading edge and said peripheral surface, said trailing face extending between said trailing edge and said peripheral surface, said external leading face intersecting said peripheral surface along an intersecting line, said peripheral surface having an external peripheral surface portion extending from said intersecting line, said external leading face forming an external obtuse angle relative to a leading portion of a tangential line which is tangential to said external peripheral surface portion at said intersecting line.
