DETAILED DESCRIPTION

With reference to FIGS. 1-8, in an embodiment, a water heater support 100 that supports and braces a water heater 110 from falling backwards and damaging an adjacent firewall 120, helping to prevent any damage to the home is disclosed. The water heater 110 includes a curved outer surface 122 with a curved contour 124. After reading this description, it will become apparent to one skilled in the art how to implement the invention in various alternative embodiments and alternative applications. However, although various embodiments of the present invention will be described herein, it is understood that these embodiments are presented by way of example and illustration only, and not limitation. As such, this detailed description of various embodiments should not be construed to limit the scope or breadth of the present invention as set forth in the appended claims.

The water heater support 100 includes an extendable support arm 130 having a cylinder shaft 140 that extends relative to and from a cylinder sleeve base 150 with a press-and-release button and lock 160. The cylinder sleeve base 150 terminates at an opposite end from the cylinder extending therefrom in a mount 162 including a plate 170 and a bracket 180, and the plate 170 is mounted via the bracket 180 to the wall 120 behind the water heater 110. Once the bracket 180 is mounted to the wall 120, the plate 170 of the cylinder sleeve base 150 slides into the mounted bracket 180. The extendable support arm 130 can be extended an additional length with the press-and-release button and lock 160 that allows the cylinder shaft 140 to extend from the cylinder sleeve base 150. The cylinder shaft 140 has a metal U-shaped tip 200 with a curved engagement surface 202 having a contour 204 matching the curved contour 124 of the curved outer surface 122 to brace the water heater 110. The U-shaped tip 200 includes a rubber material 210 glued to curved engagement surface 202 of U-shaped tip 200. The rubber material 210 inhibits slippage between the curved engagement surface 202 and the curved outer surface 122 of the water heater 110 to inhibit slippage when braced against the water heater 110. The U-shaped tip 200 braces the upper rear wall of the water heater 110, inhibiting any movement or damage to the home in the event of an earthquake. In the embodiment shown, the extendable support arm 130 is 5 inches in length when the cylinder shaft 140 is fully received in the cylinder sleeve base 150, and may extend up to an additional 4 inches when the press-and-release button and lock 160 is actuated.

With reference to FIGS. 9 and 10, another embodiment of a water heater support 310 includes an extendable support arm 330 having an inner extension steel tube/cylinder shaft 340 that extends relative to and from a housing outer steel tube/cylinder sleeve base 350 with a collar release and locking mechanism (“lock”) 360, which includes inner plastic collar release and locking mechanism 362 and outer plastic collar release and locking mechanism 364. The cylinder sleeve base 350 terminates at an opposite end from the cylinder extending therefrom in a mount 362 including a plate 370 and a mounting base steel plate/bracket (“bracket”) 380, and the plate 370 is mounted via the bracket 380 to the wall 120 behind the water heater 110. Once the bracket 380 is mounted to the wall 120, the plate 370 of the cylinder sleeve base 350 slides into the mounted bracket 380. The extendable support arm 330 can be extended an additional length with the collar release and locking mechanism 360 that allows the cylinder shaft 340 to extend from the cylinder sleeve base 350. The collar release and locking mechanism 360 is unlocked or loosened by rotating the outer plastic collar release and locking mechanism 364 relative to the inner plastic collar release and locking mechanism 362, causing the inner plastic collar release and locking mechanism 362 to have a looser hold on inner extension steel tube/cylinder shaft 340 so that the inner extension steel tube/cylinder shaft 340 can be telescopingly moved within and relative to housing outer steel tube/cylinder sleeve base 350 to adjust the extendable support arm 330 to the desired length. Once the extendable support arm 330 is at the desired length, the outer plastic collar release and locking mechanism 364 is rotated relative to the inner plastic collar release and locking mechanism 362 to tighten the collar release and locking mechanism 360 to lock the extendable support arm 330 at the desired length. The cylinder shaft 340 has a curved steel support tip/U-shaped tip 400 with a curved engagement surface 402 having a contour 404 matching the curved contour 124 of the curved outer surface 122 to brace the water heater 110. The U-shaped tip 400 includes a rubber material (e.g., rubber adhesive) 410 glued to curved engagement surface 402 of U-shaped tip 400. The rubber material 410 inhibits slippage between the curved engagement surface 402 and the curved outer surface 122 of the water heater 110 to inhibit slippage when braced against the water heater 110. The U-shaped tip 400 braces the upper rear wall of the water heater 110, inhibiting any movement or damage to the home in the event of an earthquake.
