- (3) --, --NH--, --C.sub.2 H.sub.4 --; and
- each R is (1) H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, or C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 hydroxyalkyl; and when Q is --CH.sub.2 --, R can also be:
- (2) allyl, benzyl or o-hydroxybenzyl; ##STR14## wherein each R' is H or CH.sub.3 and y is 0 or 1; (4) --(CH.sub.2).sub.m OY where m is 2 or 3;
- (5) --C.sub.2 H.sub.3 R'NR.sub.1 R.sub.2 where R' is H or CH.sub.3, R.sub.1 is H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 hydroxyalkyl, phenyl or benzyl, and R.sub.2 is H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 hydroxyalkyl;
- (6) --C.sub.2 H.sub.4 SR'" where R'" is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl;

- to thereby selectively remove said valuable metals, and then
- B. eluting the valuable metals in a more concentrated form with a strong inorganic acid or ammonium hydroxide.
- 2. The process of claim 1 where the chelate resin is a crosslinked aromatic resin with pendent methyleneaminopyridine groups of the formula: ##STR15## and has a dry weight capacity of about 0.1-4.5 meq. Cu/g acid resin.

- 4. The process of claim 3 where the copper adsorbed by the chelate resin is eluted with 1-10 N sulfuric acid.
- 5. The process of claim 3 where the copper adsorbed by the chelate resin is eluted with 1-10 N ammonium hydroxide.
- 6. The process of claim 2 where the chelate resin is a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer with pendent methyleneaminopyridine groups of the formula: ##STR16## where R is C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 hydroxyalkyl.
- 7. The process of claim 2 where the chelate resin is a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer with pendent methyleneaminopyridine groups of the formula: ##STR17##
- 8. The process of claim 2 where the chelate resin is a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer with pendent methyleneaminopyridine groups of the formula: ##STR18##

- 10. The process of claim 1 for the selective recovery of nickel from an aqueous acid leach liquor containing nickel comprising:
- A. contacting the leach liquor at a pH of about 2-4 with a water-insoluble chelate exchange resin having pendent methyleneaminopyridine groups of the formula: ##STR20## to absorb the nickel, and then
- B. eluting the nickel in more concentrated form with a more concentrated inorganic acid or ammonium hydroxide.
