Claims
- 1. A watercraft having a hull, a jet propulsion unit having a generally downwardly facing water inlet portion, an impeller portion containing in impeller for drawing water through said water inlet portion and a discharge nozzle portion for discharging water from said impeller portion for powering said watercraft, an engine supported by said hull, drive means for driving said impeller from said engine, said jet propulsion unit being supported for pivotal movement of at least said water inlet position about a generally horizontally extending pivot axis disposed contiguous to said water inlet portion and transverse to said hull and for rotation about a rotational axis extending longitudinally of said hull, said drive means including a universal joint lying on said axes, and a flexible boot assembly having a first flexible portion fixed at one end relative to said hull, a second flexible portion affixed at one end relative to said water inlet portion of the jet propulsion unit and an intermediate portion interconnecting the other ends of said first and said second flexible portions and encircling said universal joint, said first and said second flexible portions having sufficient flexibility for accommodating said pivotal and rotational movements.
- 2. A watercraft as set forth in claim 1 wherein the means for supporting the jet propulsion unit for pivotal movement is sufficient to raise the jet propulsion unit at least partially out of the body of water in which the watercraft is operating.
- 3. A watercraft as set forth in claim 2 wherein the means for supporting the jet propulsion unit .for pivotal movement permits the water inlet portion to be raised clear of the water so as to permit all water to drain out of the jet propulsion unit.
- 4. A watercraft as set forth in claim 3 further including hydraulic means for effecting the pivotal movement of the jet propulsion unit.
- 5. A watercraft as set forth in claim 1, wherein the hull defines a tunnel at the rear end thereof and wherein the jet propulsion unit is positioned substantially within the tunnel in all positions of the jet propulsion unit.
- 6. A watercraft as set forth in claim 5 wherein the means for supporting said jet propulsion unit water inlet portion for rotation permits rotation of the water inlet portion from a downwardly facing position to an upwardly facing position.
- 7. A Watercraft as set forth in claim 6 further including an access opening formed in the hull through which the water inlet portion may be accessed when the jet propulsion unit is rotated to its upwardly facing position for servicing thereof.
- 8. A watercraft as set forth in claim 7 wherein the means for supporting the jet propulsion unit for pivotal movement about the transverse axis is sufficient to raise the jet propulsion unit water inlet portion at least partially out of the body of water in which the watercraft is operating.
- 9. A watercraft as set forth in claim 8 wherein the means for supporting the jet propulsion unit for pivotal movement about the transverse axis permits the water inlet portion to be raised clear of the water so as to permit all water to drain out of the jet propulsion unit.
- 10. A watercraft as set forth in claim 5 wherein the inlet opening portion defines an inlet opening surrounded by an outwardly extending flange, and further including seal means interposed between said flange and the hull portion around the tunnel.
- 11. A watercraft as set forth in claim 1 wherein the axis of rotation of the jet propulsion unit is coincident with the axis of rotation of the impeller.
- 12. A watercraft as set forth in claim 11 wherein the jet propulsion unit is positioned within a tunnel formed in the hull of the watercraft.
- 13. A watercraft as set forth in claim 12 wherein the inlet opening portion defines an inlet opening surrounded by an outwardly extending flange, and further including seal means interposed between said flange and the hull portion around the tunnel.
- 14. A watercraft as set forth in claim 12 further including an access opening formed in the hull and through which the jet propulsion unit inlet portion is accessible when the jet propulsion unit inlet portion is rotated to its upwardly facing position.
- 15. A watercraft as set forth in claim 14 wherein the longitudinal axis of rotation of the jet propulsion unit is coincident with the axis of rotation of the impeller.
- 16. A watercraft as set forth in claim 1, wherein the intermediate portion is a rigid portion.
- 17. A watercraft as set forth in claim 16, wherein the intermediate portion forms in part the pivotal support for the jet propulsion unit about the generally horizontally extending pivot axis.
- 18. A watercraft as set forth in claim 17, wherein the other ends of the first and second flexible portions are detachably connected to the intermediate portion.
