Claims
- 1. An optical fibre cable comprising a longitudinal cavity extending along the length of the cable, at least one optical fibre housed inside said longitudinal cavity, said longitudinal cavity further comprising a solid and compact element within it, wherein said solid and compact element comprises a water-soluble polymer material which, following accidental ingress of water into the cable, is capable of forming an aqueous solution with a predetermined viscosity such as to block the flow of water within 10 meters of the point of ingress.
- 2. An optical fibre cable according to claim 1, wherein said solid and compact element comprises about 30% by weight or more of the water-soluble polymer material.
- 3. An optical fibre cable according to claim 1, wherein said solid and compact element comprises about 50% or more of the water-soluble polymer material.
- 4. An optical fibre cable according to claim 1, wherein said solid and compact element comprises more than about 75% by weight of the water-soluble polymer material.
- 5. An optical fibre cable according to claim 1, wherein said solid and compact element is a structural element of the cable and contains and protects the at least one optical fibre disposed within said longitudinal cavity.
- 6. An optical fibre cable according to claim 5, wherein said structural element is a tubular element and said longitudinal cavity is defined by the inner volume of said tubular element.
- 7. An optical fibre cable according to claim 6, wherein said tubular element comprises a two-layer wall in which the inner layer is made from the water-soluble solid material and the outer layer is made from a water-insoluble polymer material.
- 8. An optical fibre cable according to claim 7, wherein said tubular element comprises a third outer layer made of water-soluble solid polymer material.
- 9. An optical fibre cable according to claim 6, wherein said tubular element is made from a single sheath of said water-soluble solid material.
- 10. An optical fibre cable according to claim 5, wherein said structural element which contains the at least one optical fibre is a grooved core comprising at least one groove longitudinally disposed on the outer surface of said core and the longitudinal cavity is defined by the inner volume within said groove.
- 11. An optical fibre cable according to claim 10, wherein at least the walls of said groove are made from a water-soluble solid polymer material.
- 12. An optical fibre cable according to claim 10, wherein said grooved core is made completely from said water-soluble solid polymer material.
- 13. An optical fibre cable according to claim 1, wherein the solid and compact element made of water-soluble polymer material is a tape.
- 14. An optical fibre cable according to claim 1, wherein the water-soluble polymer material has a solubility in water of at least about 100 g/l.
- 15. An optical fibre cable according to claim 11 wherein said aqueous solution has a viscosity of at least about 104 cP at 20° C.
- 16. An optical fibre cable according to claim 14, wherein said aqueous solution contains an amount of water-soluble polymer material of between about 100 g/l and about 250 g/l.
- 17. An optical fibre cable according to claim 1, wherein in the presence of a relative humidity of greater than 75% outside said cavity, the relative humidity inside said cavity is maintained below about 75% for a predetermined period of time.
- 18. An optical fibre cable comprising a cavity and a solid and compact element associated with said cavity, wherein said solid and compact element comprises a water-soluble polymer material and wherein, in the presence of a relative humidity of substantially less than or equal to about 80%, the water-soluble polymer material absorbs an amount of water of less than about 25% of the amount of water which can be absorbed by the water-soluble solid material under saturation conditions.
- 19. An optical fibre cable according to claim 1 or 18, wherein the water-soluble polymer material is a water-swellable material.
- 20. An optical fibre cable according to claim 1 or 18, wherein the water-soluble material is polyacrylamide, modified polyvinyl alcohol, vinyl alcohol/vinyl acetate copolymer, polyvinylpyrrolidone or mixtures thereof.
- 21. An optical fibre cable according to claim 20, wherein the water-soluble material is a vinyl alcohol/vinyl acetate copolymer obtained by partial hydrolysis of the acetate groups of a polyvinyl acetate homopolymer.
- 22. An optical fibre cable according to claim 21, wherein the degree of hydrolysis of the acetate groups of the polyvinyl acetate homopolymer is between about 50% and about 95%.
- 23. An optical fibre cable according to claim 20, wherein the vinyl alcohol/vinyl acetate copolymer has a viscosity index of greater than about 5.
- 24. An optical fibre cable according to claim 1 or 18, wherein the water-soluble polymer material has a breaking load of greater than about 15 MPa and an elastic modulus of greater than about 200 MPa.
- 25. An optical fibre cable according to claim 1, wherein the ratio between the cross section of said cavity and the perimeter of said water-soluble element in contact with said cavity is less than about 0.5 mm.
- 26. An optical fibre cable according to claim 25, wherein, when the water-soluble polymer forms an aqueous solution having a viscosity of at least about 104 cP when contacted with water, said ratio is less than about 0.4 mm.
- 27. An optical fibre cable according to claim 1, wherein the cross section of the solid element made of water-soluble material is not less than about 10% of the free cross section of the cavity with which said solid element is associated.
- 28. An optical fibre cable according to claim 1, wherein the cross section of the solid element made of water-soluble material is not less than about 20% of the free cross section of the cavity with which said solid element is associated.
- 29. An optical fibre cable according to claim 1, wherein the cross section of the solid element made of water-soluble material is not less than about 40% of the free cross section of the cavity with which said solid element is associated.
