Claims
- 1. A water ski binding, comprising:
- (a) a binding upper having:
- a toepiece and a heelpiece cooperatively defining a binding cavity for receiving and restraining a foot, said toe and heelpieces having lower perimeter portions, said lower perimeter portions comprising upright sections forming the lower margins of the binding cavity; and
- at least one strap extending forwardly from the heelpiece and laterally across and down the side of the toepiece to define a distal end portion;
- (b) a frame having side portions securable to the lower perimeter portions of the toe and heelpieces; and,
- (c) means for fastening the distal end portion of the strap of the heelpiece to the frame at selected locations along the length of the distal end portion of the strap thereby varying the size of the binding cavity defined by the binding upper, the fastening means comprising:
- channel means formed at least in part in at least one of the side portions of the frame, with the strap extending through said channel means; and,
- means for securing the strap in the channel means.
- 2. A water ski binding, comprising:
- (a) a binding upper having:
- a toepiece and a heelpiece cooperatively defining a binding cavity for receiving and restraining a foot, said toe and heelpieces having lower perimeter portions, said lower perimeter portions comprising upright sections forming the lower margins of the binding cavity; and,
- at least one strap extending forwardly from the heelpiece and laterally across and down the side of the toepiece to define a distal end portion;
- (b) a frame securable to the lower perimeter portions of the toe and heelpieces; and,
- (c) means for fastening the distal end portion of the strap of the heelpiece to the frame at selected locations along the length of the distal end portion of the strap thereby varying the size of the binding cavity defined by the binding upper, said fastening means comprising a plurality of ribs provided on the end portion of the strap and a plurality of longitudinal slots formed in the frame, said ribs and said longitudinal slots arranged for selective cooperative engagement.
- 3. A water ski binding according to claim 2, wherein said ribs are integrally formed with the strap.
- 4. A water ski binding according to claim 2, wherein said frame includes a first frame section disposed on one side of the lower perimeter portion of said binding upper and a second frame section disposed on the opposite side of the lower perimeter portion of the binding upper, said frame first and second sections adapted to receive the strap of the binding upper therebetween.
- 5. A water ski binding, comprising:
- (a) a binding upper having:
- a toepiece and a heelpiece cooperatively defining a binding cavity for receiving and restraining a foot, said toe and heelpieces having lower perimeter portions, said lower perimeter portions comprising upright sections forming the lower margins of the binding cavity; and,
- at least one strap extending forwardly from the heelpiece and laterally across and down the side of the toepiece to define a distal end portion;
- (b) a frame securable to the lower perimeter portions of the toe and heelpieces;
- (c) means for fastening the distal end portion of the strap of the heelpiece to the frame at selected locations along the length of the distal end portion of the strap thereby varying the size of the binding cavity defined by the binding upper; and,
- (d) wherein said toepiece includes an instep portion cooperatively formed by side sections extending upwardly from the lower perimeter portions of the toepiece to a top section extending over and covering the instep of a foot, said top section of said instep portion being more resilient than said side sections of the instep portion to readily expand and contract in a direction across the toepiece.
- 6. A water ski binding according to claim 5, wherein the instep portion of the toepiece includes a top central section composed of a reduced wall thickness relative to the thickness of the remainder of the instep portion of the toepiece.
- 7. A water ski binding, comprising:
- a toepiece and a heelpiece assembly cooperatively defining a binding cavity for receiving and restraining a foot, said toepiece and said heelpiece assembly having lower perimeter portions forming the lower margins of the binding cavity, said heelpiece assembly having at least one strap extending forwardly from the heelpiece assembly and laterally across and down the side of the toepiece to define a strap distal end portion;
- a frame securable to the lower perimeter portions of the toepiece and the heelpiece assembly; and,
- means for adjusting the size of the binding cavity to enable the binding to accommodate different size feet, said adjusting means including:
- means formed at least in part by the frame to define an aperture through which the distal end portion of the strap extends; and,
- means for detachably fastening the distal end portion of the strap to the frame at the aperture at selected locations along the length of the distal end portion of the strap.
- 8. A water ski binding, comprising:
- (a) a binding upper having:
- a toepiece and a heelpiece cooperatively defining a binding cavity for receiving and restraining a foot, said toe and heelpieces having lower perimeter portions, said lower perimeter portions comprising upright sections forming the lower margins of the binding cavity; and,
- at least one strap extending forwardly from the heelpiece and laterally across and down the side of the toepiece to define a distal end portion;
- (b) a frame securable to the lower perimeter portions of the toe and heelpieces; and,
- (c) means for fastening the distal end portion of the strap of the heelpiece to the frame at selected locations along the length of the distal end portion of the strap thereby varying the size of the binding cavity defined by the binding upper, said fastening means comprising a clasp assembly for receiving the distal end portion of the strap of the binding upper and cinching the strap at a desired location along the length of the strap.
- 9. A water ski binding according to claim 8, wherein said clasp assembly includes means for permitting the strap to be pulled through the clasp assembly in the direction tending to tighten the binding upper and automatically cinching the strap assembly against movement in a direction tending to loosen the binding upper when the movement of the strap assembly is terminated, resulting in a residual tensile load on the strap.
- 10. A water ski binding according to claim 9, wherein said clasp assembly comprises means for receiving and releasably clamping the strap at selected locations along the length of the strap.
- 11. A water ski binding according to claim 10, wherein said means for receiving and releasably clamping the strap comprises:
- a clamping surface; and,
- a cam rotatably mounted relative to the clamping surface to define a strap receiving gap between the clamping surface and the cam, said cam having a face disposed towards said clamping surface for clamping the strap between the clamping surface and the cam face.
- 12. The water ski binding according to claim 9, wherein said clasp assembly comprises:
- a cam surface; and,
- a cam rotatably mounted relative to the clamping surface to define a strap receiving gap therebetween, the cam having a face disposed toward said clamping surface for cinching the strap between the clamping surface and the cam face.
- 13. A water ski binding according to claim 8, wherein said clasp assembly comprises:
- a cinching surface; and,
- a cam rotatably mounted relative to the cinching surface to define a strap receiving gap therebetween, the cam having a face disposed toward said cinching surface for cinching the strap between the cinching surface and the cam face.
- 14. A water ski binding, comprising:
- a toepiece and a heelpiece assembly cooperatively defining a binding cavity for receiving and restraining a foot, said toepiece and said heelpiece assembly having lower perimeter portions forming the lower margins of the binding cavity, said heelpiece assembly having at least one strap extending forwardly from the heelpiece assembly and laterally across and down the side of the toepiece to define a strap distal end portion;
- a frame securable to the lower perimeter portions of the toepiece and the heelpiece assembly; and,
- means for adjusting the size of the binding cavity to enable the binding to accommodate different sized feet, said adjusting means including means for detachably attaching the distal end portion of the strap of the heelpiece assembly to the frame at selected locations along the length of the distal end portion of the strap, said adjusting means comprising a plurality of ribs provided on the distal end portion of the strap and at least one slot formed in the frame, said ribs and said slot arranged for selective cooperative engagement.
- 15. A water ski binding, comprising:
- a toepiece and a heelpiece assembly cooperatively defining a binding cavity for receiving and restraining a foot, said toepiece and said heelpiece assembly having lower perimeter portions forming the lower margins of the binding cavity, said heelpiece assembly having at least one strap extending forwardly from the heelpiece assembly and laterally across and down the side of the toepiece to define a strap distal end portion;
- a frame securable to the lower perimeter portions of the toepiece and the heelpiece assembly; and,
- means for adjusting the size of the binding cavity to enable the binding to accommodate different sized feet, said adjusting means including means for detachably attaching the distal end portion of the strap of the heelpiece assembly to the frame at selected locations along the length of the distal end portion of the strap, said adjusting means comprising a clasp assembly for receiving the distal end portion of the strap of the binding upper and cinching the strap at a desired location along the length of the strap.
- 16. A water ski binding according to claim 15, wherein said clasp assembly includes means for permitting the strap to be pulled through the clasp assembly in the direction tending to reduce the size of the binding capacity and automatically cinching the strap against movement in a direction tending to enlarge the size of the cavity when the movement of the strap is terminated, resulting in a residual tensile load on the strap.
- 17. A water ski binding according to claim 16, wherein said clasp assembly comprises means for receiving and releasably clamping the strap at selected locations along the length of the strap.
- 18. A water ski binding according to claim 17, wherein said means for receiving and releasably clamping the strap comprise:
- a clamping surface; and,
- a cam rotatably mounted relative to the clamping surface to define a strap-receiving gap between the clamping surface and the cam, said cam having a face disposed toward said clamping surface for clamping the strap between the clamping surface and the cam face.
- 19. The water ski binding according to claim 16, wherein said clasp assembly comprises:
- a cam surface; and,
- a cam rotatably mounted relative to the clamping surface to define a strap-receiving gap therebetween, the cam having a face disposed toward said clamping surface for cinching the strap between the clamping surface and the cam face.
- 20. A water ski binding according to claim 15, wherein said clasp assembly comprises:
- a cinching surface; and,
- a cam rotatably mounted relative to the cinching surface to define a strap-receiving gap therebetween, the cam having a face disposed toward said cinching surface for cinching the strap between the cinching surface and the cam face.
- 21. A water ski binding, comprising:
- (a) a frame assembly;
- (b) a binding upper having:
- a toepiece and a heelpiece cooperatively defining a binding cavity for receiving and restraining a skier's foot, the toe and heelpieces having lower marginal portions secured to the frame assembly; and,
- at least one strap extending forward from the heelpiece and laterally across and down the side of the toepiece to define a distal end portion;
- (c) means integral with the distal end portion of the strap for fastening the distal end portion of the strap to the frame assembly at selected locations along the length of the distal end portion of the strap thereby to vary the size of the binding cavity defined by the binding upper;
- (d) abutment ridges extending adjacent lower marginal portions of the binding upper at the interior sides of the binding cavity to define the corresponding lower perimeter portions of the binding cavity and to provide lateral support for the skier's foot; and,
- (e) wherein the lower marginal portions of the toepiece are disposed substantially upright along the abutment ridges.
- 22. A water ski binding according to claim 21, wherein said fastening means comprise a plurality of holes extending along the length of the distal end portion of the strap and pin means anchorable to the binding frame assembly, said pin means and said holes arranged for selective cooperative engagement.
- 23. A water ski binding according to claim 21, wherein said abutment ridges and said frame assembly define upright gaps for receiving the marginal portions of the toepiece therein.
- 24. A water ski binding according to claim 23, wherein:
- the abutment ridges have an inward surface facing the skier's foot and an outward, upright surface facing away from the skier's foot; and,
- the lower marginal portions of at least the toepiece of the binding upper are held against the outward surfaces of the abutment ridges by the frame assembly.
- 25. A water ski binding according to claim 24, wherein the abutment ridges are composed of substantially rigid material.
- 26. A water ski binding according to claim 21, wherein the lower marginal portions of the heelpiece tangentially intersect the abutment ridges.
- 27. A water ski binding according to claim 26, wherein the abutment ridges are composed of substantially rigid material.
- 28. A water ski binding according to claim 21, wherein the frame assembly includes a sole plate extending between the abutment ridges, whereby the sole plate and the abutment ridges cooperatively define a foot receiving depression to provide lateral support for the skier's foot.
- 29. A water ski binding according to claim 28, wherein the sole plate and abutment ridges are of unitary, substantially rigid construction.
- 30. A water ski binding according to claim 28, wherein the abutment ridge curve upwardly from the sole plate to present curved surfaces along the sides of the foot receiving cavity.
- 31. A water ski binding according to claim 21, wherein the frame assembly includes an external frame extending along and outwardly from the abutment ridges, the external frame cooperating with the abutment ridges to define generally upright gaps for receiving therein lower marginal portions of the binding upper.
- 32. A water ski binding according to claim 21, wherein in transverse cross section the abutment ridges curve upward in the laterally outward direction to tangentially intersect the lower marginal portions of the binding upper.
- 33. A water ski binding according to claim 21, wherein said securing means comprise a clasp assembly for receiving the distal end portion of a strap of the binding upper and for cinching the strap at a desired location along the length of the strap.
- 34. A water ski binding according to claim 21, wherein said securing means comprise a plurality of holes provided in said strap and pin means attachable to the binding frame, said pin means and said holes arranged for selective cooperative engagement.
