Claims
- 1. In a waterless urinal including a compartment holding collected urine, and a drain that drains the compartment as said compartment is filled with urine, the improvement comprising
a liquid floating on the urine, said liquid including a biocide and a compound selected from the group consisting of
(1) branched aliphatic alcohols with C12 to C24 carbon chain lengths, (2) a mix of the branched aliphatic alcohols and linear aliphatic alcohols with C10 to C18 carbon chain lengths, (3) a mix of the branched aliphatic alcohols and linear aliphatic fatty acids with C14 to C18 carbon chain lengths, and (4) a mix of the branched aliphatic alcohols, linear aliphatic alcohols with C10 to C18 carbon chain lengths, and linear aliphatic fatty acids with C14 to C18 carbon chain lengths.
- 2. The waterless urinal according to claim 1 where the branched alcohols are selected from the group consisting of 2-butyloctanol, 2-butyldecanol, 2-hexyloctanol, 2-hexyldecanol, 2-octyldecanol, 2-hexyldodecanol, 2-octyldodecanol, and mixtures thereof.
- 3. The waterless urinal according to claim 1 where (a) the linear alcohols are selected from the group consisting of 1-decanol, 1-dodecanol, 1-tetradecanol, and 1-hexadecanol and (b) the linear aliphatic fatty acids are selected from the group consisting of n-dodecanoic acid, n-tetradecanoic acid, n-hexadecanoic acid, and n-octadecanoic acid.
- 4. The waterless urinal according to claim 1 where the branched alcohols are 2-alkyl-alkanols.
- 5. The waterless urinal according to claim 1 where the biocide is from 0.1 to 5 weight percent of the liquid.
- 6. The waterless urinal according to claim 5 where the biocide is an aromatic halogen compound.
- 7. The waterless urinal according to claim 6 where the aromatic halogen compound is 4-chloro-3-methylphenol.
- 8. The waterless urinal according to claim 1 where the liquid includes a dye that is soluble in the liquid.
- 9. The waterless urinal according to claim 8 where the dye is from 0.1 to 1 weight percent the liquid.
- 10. The waterless urinal according to claim 8 where the dye is a blue dye selected from the anthraquinone dye family.
- 11. The waterless urinal according to claim 1 where the liquid includes a fragrance.
- 12. The waterless urinal according to claim 11 where the fragrance is from 0.1 to 5 weight percent of the liquid.
- 13. The waterless urinal according to claim 11 where the fragrance is a lime fragrance, a lemon fragrance, a cherry fragrance, or an almond fragrance.
- 14. The waterless urinal according to claim 1 where the mix of branched alcohols, linear alcohols, and linear fatty acids comprises from 60 to 100 weight percent branched alcohols, and from 0 to 40 weight percent linear alcohols, and from 0 to 40 weight percent of the linear fatty acids.
- 15. The waterless urinal according to claim 1 the liquid includes a blend of a dye, a fragrance and the biocide, with the blend comprising from 2.5 to 3.5 weight percent of the total weight of the liquid, with the dye comprising from 0.1 to 0.2 weight percent of the blend, the fragrance comprising from 1 to 1.5 weight percent of the blend, and the biocide comprising from 2 to 3 weight percent of the blend.
- 16. In a waterless urinal including a compartment holding urine, and a drain that drains the compartment as said compartment is filled with urine, the improvement comprising
a liquid floating on the urine, said liquid including 4-chloro-3-methylphenol in an amount effective to act as a biocide and a compound selected from the group consisting of
(1) branched aliphatic alcohols with C12 to C24 carbon chain lengths, (2) a mix of the branched aliphatic alcohols and linear aliphatic alcohols with C10 to C18 carbon chain lengths, (3) a mix of the branched aliphatic alcohols and linear aliphatic fatty acids with C14 to C18 carbon chain lengths, and (4) a mix of the branched aliphatic alcohols, linear aliphatic alcohols with C10 to C18 carbon chain lengths, and linear aliphatic fatty acids with C14 to C18 carbon chain lengths.
- 17. The waterless urinal according to claim 16 where the branched aliphatic alcohols is 2-butyloctanol.
- 18. A composition comprising a mixture of a biocide and at least one compound selected from the group consisting of
(1) branched aliphatic alcohols with C12 to C24 carbon chain lengths, (2) a mix of the branched aliphatic alcohols and linear aliphatic alcohols with C10 to C18 carbon chain lengths, (3) a mix of the branched aliphatic alcohols and linear aliphatic fatty acids with C14 to C18 carbon chain lengths, and (4) a mix of the branched aliphatic alcohols, linear aliphatic alcohols with C10 to C18 carbon chain lengths, and linear aliphatic fatty acids with C14 to C18 carbon chain lengths.
- 19. The composition according to claim 18 where the biocide is from 0.1 to 5 weight percent of the mixture.
- 20. The composition according to claim 18 where the biocide is an aromatic halogen compound.
- 21. The composition according to claim 20 where the aromatic halogen compound is 4-chloro-3-methylphenol.
- 22. The composition according to claim 18 where the branched alcohols are selected from the group consisting of 2-butyloctanol, 2-butyldecanol, 2-hexyloctanol, 2-hexyldecanol, 2-octyldecanol, 2-hexyldodecanol, 2-octyldodecanol, and mixtures thereof.
- 23. The composition according to claim 18 where (a) the linear alcohols are selected from the group consisting of 1-decanol, 1-dodecanol, 1-tetradecanol, and 1-hexadecanol, and (b) the linear aliphatic fatty acids are selected from the group consisting of n-dodecanoic acid, n-tetradecanoic acid, n-hexadecanoic acid, and n-octadecanoic acid.
- 24. The composition according to claim 18 where the branched alcohol is 2-alkyl-alkanols.
- 25. The composition according to claim 18 including a dye that is soluble in the mixture.
- 26. The composition according to claim 25 where the dye is from 0.1 to 1 weight percent the mixture.
- 27. The composition according to claim 25 where the dye is a blue dye selected from the anthraquinone dye family.
- 28. The composition according to claim 18 including a fragrance.
- 29. The composition according to claim 28 where the fragrance is from 0.1 to 5 weight percent of the mixture.
- 30. The composition according to claim 28 where the fragrance is a lime fragrance, a lemon fragrance, a cherry fragrance, or an almond fragrance.
- 31. The composition according to claim 18 where the mix of branched alcohols, linear alcohols, and linear fatty acids comprises from 60 to 100 weight percent branched alcohols, and from 0 to 40 weight percent linear alcohols, and from 0 to 40 weight percent of the linear fatty acids.
- 32. The composition according to claim 18 including a blend of a dye, a fragrance and the biocide, with the blend comprising from 2.5 to 3.5 weight percent of the total weight of the liquid, with the dye comprising from 0.1 to 0.2 weight percent of the blend, the fragrance comprising from 1 to 1.5 weight percent of the blend, and the biocide comprising from 2 to 3 weight percent of the blend.
- 33. A composition comprising 4-chloro-3-methylphenol in an amount effective to act as a biocide and the balance a compound that is a liquid at ambient temperature, said compound selected from the group consisting of
(1) branched aliphatic alcohols with C12 to C24 carbon chain lengths, (2) a mix of the branched aliphatic alcohols and linear aliphatic alcohols with C10 to C18 carbon chain lengths, (3) a mix of the branched aliphatic alcohols and linear aliphatic fatty acids with C14 to C18 carbon chain lengths, and (4) a mix of the branched aliphatic alcohols, linear aliphatic alcohols with C10 to C18 carbon chain lengths, and linear aliphatic fatty acids with C14 to C18 carbon chain lengths.
- 34. A method of suppressing odors from a waterless urinal including a compartment holding urine, wherein a liquid that floats on the urine is placed in the compartment, said liquid including a biocide and a compound selected from the group consisting of
(1) branched aliphatic alcohols with C12 to C24 carbon chain lengths, (2) a mix of the branched aliphatic alcohols and linear aliphatic alcohols with C10 to C18 carbon chain lengths, (3) a mix of the branched aliphatic alcohols and linear aliphatic fatty acids with C14 to C18 carbon chain lengths, and (4) a mix of the branched aliphatic alcohols, linear aliphatic alcohols with C10 to C18 carbon chain lengths, and linear aliphatic fatty acids with C14 to C18 carbon chain lengths.
- 35. The method according to claim 34 where the branched alcohols are selected from the group consisting of 2-butyloctanol, 2-butyldecanol, 2-hexyloctanol, 2-hexyldecanol, 2-octyldecanol, 2-hexyldodecanol, 2-octyldodecanol, and mixtures thereof.
- 36. The method according to claim 34 where (a) the linear alcohols are selected from the group consisting of 1-decanol, 1-dodecanol, 1-tetradecanol, and 1-hexadecanol, and (b) the linear aliphatic fatty acids are selected from the group consisting of n-dodecanoic acid, n-tetradecanoic acid, n-hexadecanoic acid, and n-octadecanoic acid.
- 37. The method according to claim 34 where the branched alcohols are 2-alkyl-alkanols.
- 38. The method according to claim 34 where the biocide is from 0.1 to 5 weight percent of the liquid.
- 39. The method according to claim 38 where the biocide is an aromatic halogen compound.
- 40. The method according to claim 39 where the aromatic halogen compound is 4-chloro-3-methylphenol.
- 41. The method according to claim 40 where the branched aliphatic alcohol is 2-butyloctanol.
- 42. The method according to claim 41 where the liquid includes a dye that is soluble in the liquid.
- 43. The method according to claim 42 where the dye is from 0.1 to 1 weight percent the liquid.
- 44. The method according to claim 43 where the dye is a blue dye selected from the anthraquinone dye family.
- 45. The method according to claim 42 where the liquid includes a fragrance.
- 46. The method according to claim 45 where the fragrance is from 0.1 to 5 weight percent of the liquid.
- 47. The method according to claim 48 where the fragrance is a lime fragrance, a lemon fragrance, a cherry fragrance, or an almond fragrance.
- 48. The method according to claim 47 the liquid includes a blend of a dye, a fragrance and the biocide, with the blend comprising from 2.5 to 3.5 weight percent of the total weight of the liquid, with the dye comprising from 0.1 to 0.2 weight percent of the blend, the fragrance comprising from 1 to 1.5 weight percent of the blend, and the biocide comprising from 2 to 3 weight percent of the blend.
- 49. The method according to claim 34 where the mix of branched alcohols, linear alcohols, and linear fatty acids comprises from 60 to 100 weight percent branched alcohols, and from 0 to 40 weight percent linear alcohols, and from 0 to 40 weight percent of the linear fatty acids.
- 50. A method of suppressing odors from a waterless urinal including a compartment holding urine, wherein a liquid that floats on the urine is placed in the compartment, said liquid including 4-chloro-3-methylphenol in an amount effective to act as a biocide and a compound selected from the group consisting of
(1) branched aliphatic alcohols with C12 to C24 carbon chain lengths, (2) a mix of the branched aliphatic alcohols and linear aliphatic alcohols with C10 to C18 carbon chain lengths, (3) a mix of the branched aliphatic alcohols and linear aliphatic fatty acids with C14 to C18 carbon chain lengths, and (4) a mix of the branched aliphatic alcohols, linear aliphatic alcohols with C10 to C18 carbon chain lengths, and linear aliphatic fatty acids with C14 to C18 carbon chain lengths.
