Claims
- 1. A sealing assembly for sealing a manhole against entering liquid, the manhole containing at least one pipe, the sealing assembly comprising:
- (a) means for fixing to interior walls of the manhole for providing a supporting surface;
- (b) a sealing member for resting on top of the supporting surface and for providing a seal around the pipe, and with the interior walls of the manhole, the sealing member having a base, a first sealing element attached to the base and disposed on the supporting surface and actuable for sealing the interior walls of the manhole with respect to the base, a top, means for connecting the base and top in a fluid tight manner, and a second sealing element attached to the top, the top having an aperture formed therein for enabling access through the manhole to the pipe, and the second sealing element being actuable to provide a seal between the top and the manhole;
- (c) first means for actuating the first sealing element; and
- (d) second means for actuating the second sealing element.
- 2. The sealing assembly of claim 1, wherein the first means for actuating comprises means for pressing the base toward the supporting surface to actuate the first sealing element disposed therebetween.
- 3. The sealing assembly of claim 2, wherein the first sealing element comprises a foam rubber ring.
- 4. The sealing assembly of claim 2, wherein the means for pressing comprises an expandable assembly including a threaded rod, means for fixing the rod to a side of the base opposite the first sealing element, and an outer member threaded to the rod for movement towards or away from the base.
- 5. The sealing assembly of claim 4, wherein the means for pressing further comprises means attached to the outer member for wedging and means for providing a surface for the means for wedging to wedge against.
- 6. The sealing assembly of claim 4, wherein there are multiple expandable assemblies disposed around a periphery of the base.
- 7. The sealing assembly of claim 1, wherein the second sealing element comprises a foam rubber ring.
- 8. The sealing assembly of claim 1, wherein the means for connecting comprises a rubber hose and means for fixing the hose to the base and the top.
- 9. The sealing assembly of claim 8, wherein the top and base each have a horizontal flange and a vertical flange, the hose being fixed to the top and base at the vertical flanges by the means for fixing which comprises first and second hose clamps, respectively.
- 10. The sealing assembly of claim 1, wherein the second means for actuating comprises a bolt for bolting the top to the manhole cover to actuate the second sealing element disposed therebetween.
- 11. The sealing assembly of claim 1, wherein the sealing member further comprises a gasket disposed under an inner periphery of the top for sealing the top against a spill bucket.
- 12. The sealing assembly of claim 1 wherein there is an observation port formed therein for opening to observe below the sealing assembly and for closing to reestablish the liquid tight seal.
- 13. The sealing assembly of claim 1, wherein the means for providing a supporting surface comprises an expandable ring for pressing against the wall of the manhole.
- 14. The sealing assembly of claim 1, wherein the assembly is for two pipes, the top having two apertures formed therein and the second sealing element comprising two foam rubber rings disposed on the top and around the apertures.
- 15. The sealing assembly of claim 11, wherein the spill bucket is rectangular, and the second sealing element is rectangular.
- 16. The sealing assembly of claim 11, wherein the spill bucket is round, and the second sealing element is round.
- 17. The sealing assembly of claim 1, wherein the means for connecting is flexible.
- 18. A sealing assembly for sealing a manhole against entering liquid, the manhole having a skirt and containing at least one pipe with a spill bucket disposed there around, the sealing assembly comprising:
- (a) means for fixing to the skirt for providing a supporting surface;
- (b) a sealing member for resting on top of the supporting surface and for providing a seal around the pipe by sealing to the spill bucket, the sealing member comprising a top, a base, first and second sealing elements, means for connecting the top and base, and a gasket;
- (c) means for pressing the base against the means for fixing with the first sealing element disposed therebetween for sealing the base to the skirt of the manhole; and
- (d) means for fixing the top to the manhole cover with the gasket therebetween, and a lip of the spill bucket to the top with the second sealing element therebetween.
