Claims
- 1. An improved annular face seal ring comprising:
- a sealing ring face on an axially facing surface of the ring;
- a dam of the sealing ring face comprising a generally flat annular circumferential surface, the dame having a radial width narrower than the radial width of the sealing ring face;
- at least two circumferentially disposed performed waves which increase in amplitude radially away from the dam, thereby decreasing in amplitude radially towards the dam, the performed waves comprising high areas and low areas on the sealing ring face;
- performed tilted regions which tilt downward and radially away from the dam, the lowest area of the tilted regions generally coinciding with the lowest areas of the performed waves; and
- wherein the waves of the sealing ring face have a lapped surface.
- 2. An improved annular face seal ring comprising:
- a sealing ring face on an axially facing surface of the ring;
- a dam on the sealing ring face comprising a generally flat annular circumferential surface, the dam having a radial width narrower than the radial width of the sealing ring face;
- at least two circumferentially disposed preformed waves which increase in amplitude radially away from the dam, thereby decreasing in amplitude radially towards the dam, the preformed waves comprising high areas on the sealing face ring;
- preformed tilted regions which tilt downward and radially away from the dam, the lowest area of the tilted regions generally coinciding with the lowest areas of the preformed waves; and
- wherein the waves of the sealing ring face have a surface roughness of about 4 .mu. inch R.sub.a or less.
- 3. The face seal ring as defined in claim 2, wherein the ring is made from a material having a high Young's modulus.
- 4. The face seal ring as defined in claim 2, wherein the sealing ring face has a surface roughness of about 2 .mu. inch R.sub.a or less.
- 5. The face seal ring as defined in claim 2, wherein the face seal ring is made of tungsten carbide.
- 6. The face seal ring as defined in claim 2, wherein the face seal ring is made of silicon carbide.
- 7. The face seal ring as defined in claim 2, wherein the face seal ring is made of ceramic.
- 8. A wavy face ring assembly comprising:
- a housing having an interior surface defining a chamber;
- a rotating shaft mounted within the housing, at least a portion of the shaft extending into the chamber;
- two rings, each having a face surface, the rings mounted within the chamber and about the shaft with their face surfaces in opposed alignment to define a sliding interface, one of the rings mounted to the shaft for rotation therewith and the other ring mounted to the housing, one of the rings having a wavy face with at least two circumferentially disposed performed waves having high areas and low areas thereon; and
- wherein the waves of the face of the ring with the wavy face have a lapped surface.
- 9. The ring assembly as defined in claim 8, wherein the ring with the wavy face is a seal ring.
- 10. The ring assembly as defined in claim 8, wherein the ring with the wavy face is a thrust ring.
- 11. The face seal ring as defined in claim 8, wherein the sealing ring face has a surface roughness of about 4 .mu. inch R.sub.a or less.
- 12. The face seal ring as defined in claim 8, wherein the sealing ring face has a surface roughness of about 2 .mu.inch R.sub.a or less.
- 13. The face seal ring as defined in claim 8, wherein the face seal ring is made of tungsten carbide.
- 14. The face seal ring as defined in claim 8, wherein the face seal ring is made of silicon carbide.
- 15. The face seal ring as defined in claim 8, wherein the face seal ring is made of ceramic.
- 16. The wavy face ring assembly of claim 8, further comprising a dam on the sealing ring face having a generally flat annular circumferential surface, the dam having a radial width narrower than the radial width of the sealing ring face.
- 17. An improved annular face seal ring mountable in opposed alignment to another annular face seal ring to form a sliding interface in a mechanical seal assembly, the improved annular face seal ring comprising:
- a sealing ring face on an axially facing surface of the ring; and
- at least two circumferentially disposed preformed waves on the sealing ring face having high areas and low areas on the sealing ring face;
- wherein the waves of the sealing ring face have a lapped surface.
- 18. The face seal ring as defined in claim 17, wherein the sealing ring face has a surface roughness, of about 4 .mu. inch R.sub.a or less.
- 19. The face seal ring as defined in claim 17, wherein the sealing ring face has a surface roughness of about 2 .mu. inch R.sub.a or less.
- 20. The face sealing ring as defined in claim 17, further comprising a dam on the sealing ring face having a generally flat annular circumferential surface, the dam having a radial width narrower than the radial width of the sealing ring face.
- 21. An improved annular face seal ring mountable in opposed alignment to another annular face seal ring to form a sliding interface in a mechanical seal assembly, the improved annular face seal ring comprising:
- a sealing ring face on an axially facing surface of the ring; and
- at least two circumferentially disposed preformed waves on the sealing ring face having high areas and low areas on the sealing ring face;
- wherein the waves of the sealing ring face have a surface roughness of about 4 .mu. inch R.sub.a or less.
- 22. The face seal ring as defined in claim 21, wherein the sealing ring face has a surface roughness of about 2 .mu. inch R.sub.a or less.
- 23. The face seal ring of claim 21, further comprising a dam on the sealing ring face having a generally flat annular circumferential surface, the dam having a radial width narrower than the radial width of the sealing ring face.
