Claims
- 1. A method of making a surface film magnetic recording head, comprising:
depositing a magnetically permeable thin film layer over a multi-channel head substrate; patterning photoresist on top of the magnetically permeable thin film layer so as to leave areas between the channels uncovered; and removing the uncovered magnetically permeable thin film so as to form spaces in the magnetically permeable thin film between the channels consistent with the areas defined by the photoresist, wherein the spaces are sufficiently large to allow for magnetic isolation between the channels.
- 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:
forming a writing gap through the thin film layer.
- 3. The method of claim 2, further comprising:
filling in the writing gap with a magnetically impermeable material.
- 4. The method of claim 3, wherein a Focused Ion Beam is used to fill in the writing gap.
- 5. A magnetic recording head formed by the method of claim 1.
- 6. Magnetic tape written by the magnetic recording head of claim 5.
- 7. A multi-channel magnetic recording head, comprising:
a head substrate having a plurality of channels; and a magnetically permeable thin film layer on a surface to the head substrate, having at least one void so as to magnetically isolate at least one of said plurality of channels from at least one other of said plurality of channels.
- 8. Magnetic recording media written by the head of claim 7.
- 9. A method of making a multi-channel magnetic recording head, comprising:
forming a magnetically permeable thin film on a head substrate; forming at least one void through the thin film in-between at least two channels; and placing a magnetically impermeable material into the void.
- 10. The method of claim 9, wherein voids are formed so as to isolate each of the channels.
- 11. The method of claim 9, wherein forming at least one void includes:
removing the thin film in all areas except directly over each channel of the head substrate.
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein each channel is defined by a width of a magnetically permeable material within the head substrate.
- 13. The method of claim 11, wherein each channel is defined by a width of a magnetically permeable material within the head substrate plus a width of a bonding material joining the magnetically permeable material to a remainder of the head substrate.
- 14. The method of claim 9, wherein forming the void includes:
applying photoresist over the thin film in a pattern defining a position of the void; and etching the thin film in areas exposed by the photoresist.
- 15. The method of claim 14, wherein placing the magnetically impermeable material includes;
applying the magnetically impermeable material over the photoresist and the voids; and removing the photoresist and the magnetically impermeable material attached thereto.
- 16. The method of claim 14, wherein the magnetically impermeable material has a height substantially equal to a height of the thin film.
- 17. A magnetic recording head formed by the method of claim 9.
- 18. Magnetic media written by the recording head of claim 17.
- 19. A multi-channel magnetic recording head, comprising:
a multi-channel head substrate; a magnetically permeable thin film layer located on the head substrate and including a writing gap for each channel; and a magnetically impermeable member dividing the thin film layer into magnetically isolated regions.
- 20. The magnetic recording head of claim 19, wherein the magnetically permeable thin film layer and the magnetically impermeable member form a substantially smooth and substantially continuous tape bearing surface.
- 21. The magnetic recording head of claim 19, wherein a height of the thin film layer is substantially equal to a height of the magnetically impermeable member.
- 22. The magnetic recording head of claim 19, wherein the thin film is only located above each of the channels on a writing side of the head substrate and a remainder of a surface of the head substrate on the writing side is covered with sections of the magnetically impermeable member.
- 23. The magnetic recording head of claim 18, wherein each channel is defined by a width of a magnetically permeable material within the head substrate.
- 24. The magnetic recording head of claim 22, wherein each channel is defined by a width of a magnetically permeable material within the head substrate plus a width of a bonding material joining the magnetically permeable material to a remainder of the head substrate.
- 25. The magnetic recording head of claim 22, wherein ferrite corners in each channel are covered by the magnetically permeable thin film.
- 26. The magnetic recording head of claim 19, wherein a magnetically impermeable member is located between each channel in the thin film layer so as to magnetically isolate each channel from one another.
- 27. The magnetic recording head of claim 26, wherein a width of each magnetically impermeable member is a minimum required to provide magnetic isolation.
- 28. The magnetic recording head of claim 19, wherein the writing gap-is filled with magnetically impermeable material.
- 29. A method of making a surface film magnetic recording head, comprising:
depositing a magnetically permeable thin film layer over a multi-channel head substrate; patterning a masking layer on top of the magnetically permeable thin film layer so as to leave areas between the channels uncovered; and removing the uncovered magnetically permeable thin film so as to form spaces in the magnetically permeable thin film between the channels consistent with the areas defined by the masking layer, wherein the spaces are sufficiently large to allow for magnetic isolation between the channels.
- 30. The method of claim 29, further comprising:
forming a writing gap through the thin film layer.
- 31. The method of claim 30, further comprising:
filling in the writing gap with a magnetically impermeable material.
- 32. The method of claim 31, wherein a Focused Ion Beam is used to fill in the writing gap.
- 33. A magnetic recording head formed by the method of claim 29.
- 34. Magnetic tape written by the magnetic recording head of claim 33.
- 35. A method of making a multi-channel magnetic recording head, comprising:
forming a magnetically permeable thin film on a head substrate; forming at least one void through the thin film in-between at least two channels; and placing a magnetically impermeable material into the void, wherein forming at the least one void includes applying a mask over the thin film in a pattern defining a position of the void and etching the thin film in areas left exposed by the mask.
- 36. The method of claim 35, wherein placing the magnetically impermeable material includes applying the magnetically impermeable material over the mask and the voids, and removing the mask and the magnetically impermeable material attached thereto.
