Claims
- 1. A web feeding mechanism comprising:
- a) a base;
- b) a rotatable support mounted on the base and adapted to carry a coiled web of material;
- c) a tapered mandrel connected to the support and journaled for rotation about an axis;
- d) a feed control mandrel supported above the base for rotation about an axis which is other than parallel to the tapered mandrel axis; and
- e) wherein the tapered mandrel includes a driven section and the feed control mandrel includes a drive section for driving the driven section to rotate the tapered mandrel.
- 2. The mechanism of claim 1 wherein the feed control mandrel is pivotally connected to the mechanism.
- 3. The mechanism of claim 1 wherein the feed control mandrel axis is at an acute angle with the tapered mandrel axis.
- 4. The mechanism of claim 3 wherein a mandrel angle adjustment means is provided.
- 5. The mechanism of claim 1 wherein one of the sections is elastomeric.
- 6. The mechanism of claim 5 wherein the one section is the drive section.
- 7. A dispenser for dispensing bags from a coiled web of interconnected bags, each of which is open, comprising:
- a) a bag coil support including a base and a relatively rotatable coil supporting surface;
- b) a guide mandrel supporting shaft secured to the base such that when the coil supporting surface is positioned in a generally horizontal coil supporting orientation, the guide mandrel shaft projects generally vertically upwardly of the surface;
- c) a tapered web guiding mandrel journaled on the guide mandrel shaft for rotation about an axis, the tapered mandrel having a smaller end adapted to be the to end of a web guiding surface;
- d) a feed control mandrel shaft pivotally supported by the guide mandrel supporting shaft, the control mandrel shaft having an axis which is other than parallel with the guide mandrel shaft axis; and
- e) a web feed control mandrel journaled on the control mandrel shaft and having a surface adapted to engage a web in feed control relationship.
- 8. The dispenser of claim 7 wherein the feed control mandrel shaft is removably connected to the dispenser with a removable connection.
- 9. The dispenser of claim 7 wherein the control mandrel shaft axis is adapted to position the feed control mandrel at an acute angle with the vertical when the support surface is horizontal.
- 10. The dispenser of claim 9 wherein an adjustment means is provided to adjust the angular relationship of the control mandrel shaft.
- 11. The dispenser of claim 7 wherein the feed control mandrel includes a drive section and the tapered mandrel includes a driven section.
- 12. The dispenser of claim 11 wherein the one of the sections is elastomeric.
- 13. The dispenser of claim 12 wherein the one section is the drive section.
- 14. A dispenser for dispensing bags from a coiled web of interconnected bags, each of which bags is open, comprising:
- a) a bag coil support, including a base and a relatively rotatable coil supporting surface;
- b) a guide mandrel supporting shaft secured to the base such that when the coil supporting surface is positioned in a generally horizontal coil supporting orientation, the guide mandrel shaft projects generally vertically upwardly of the surface;
- c) a tapered web guiding mandrel journaled on the guide mandrel shaft for rotation about an axis, the tapered mandrel having a small end adapted to be the top end of a web guiding surface;
- d) a feed control mandrel shaft pivotally connected to the dispenser, the control mandrel shaft having an axis which is other than parallel with the guide mandrel shaft axis;
- e) a web feed control mandrel journaled on the control mandrel shaft and having a surface adapted to engage a web in feed control relationship; and
- f) wherein the feed control mandrel shaft is pivotally connected to the dispenser with a removable connection and wherein the removable connection is a slot and pin forming a pivot above and laterally offset from the guide mandrel shaft.
- 15. The dispenser of claim 14 wherein the feed control mandrel shaft is connected to the remainder of the dispenser at a location near the end of the guide mandrel shaft remote from the coil supporting surface.
- 16. A dispenser for dispensing bags from a coiled web of interconnected bags, each of which bags is open, comprising:
- a) a bag coil supporting table including a coil supporting surface;
- b) a guide mandrel supporting shaft connected to and projecting at least to one side of the table such that when the coil supporting surface is positioned in a generally horizontal coil supporting orientation, the guide mandrel shaft projects generally vertically upwardly of the table surface;
- c) a tapered web guiding mandrel connected to the table and journaled on the guide mandrel shaft for rotation about an axis, the tapered mandrel having a frusto conical web guiding surface with a smaller end adapted to be the top end of the web guiding surface;
- d) a web feed control mandrel bracket mounted on the guide mandrel shaft in spaced relationship with the coil supporting surface and above the tapered mandrel when the shaft is vertically oriented;
- e) a feed control mandrel shaft pivotally and removably connected to the bracket when the dispenser is in use, the control mandrel shaft having an axis which intersects the guide mandrel shaft axis at a downwardly directed acute angle; and
- f) a web feed control mandrel journaled on the control mandrel shaft and having a cylindrical surface adapted to engage a web in feed control relationship.
- 17. The dispenser of claim 16 wherein an adjustment means is provided to adjust the angular relationship of the control mandrel shaft.
- 18. A process of dispensing a web of interconnected but open bags from a coil comprising:
- a) positioning a coil of bags on a rotatable support;
- b) pulling an internal end of the coil from a coil central aperture of the coil having a diameter at least as great as the width of the web; and
- c) feeding the web along a path with the bags oriented to travel the path closed end first, by reeving the web sequentially around a pair of rotatable mandrels positioned with their axes in nonparallel relationship and thence to a loading station.
- 19. A dispenser for dispensing bags from a coiled web of interconnected bags, each of which bags is open, comprising:
- a) a bag coil supporting table including a coil supporting surface;
- b) a guide mandrel supporting shaft projecting, at least to one side of the table, such that when the coil supporting surface is positioned in a generally horizontal coil supporting orientation, the guide mandrel shaft projects generally vertically upwardly of the table surface;
- c) a tapered web guiding mandrel connected to a table and journaled with the table on the guide mandrel shaft for rotation about an axis, the tapered mandrel having a web guiding surface;
- d) a web feed control mandrel support bracket mounted on the guide mandrel shaft in spaced relationship with the coil supporting surface and above the tapered mandrel when the shaft is vertically oriented;
- e) a feed control mandrel shaft hanging bracket pivotally and removably connected to the support bracket;
- f) one of the brackets including a pin and the other a slot open at one end to provide the pivotal and removable connection;
- g) a feed control mandrel shaft connected to the hanging bracket; and
- h) a feed control mandrel journaled on the feed control mandrel shaft.
- 20. The dispenser of claim 19 wherein a feed control mandrel angular adjustment means is carried by a first of the brackets to coact with the second of the brackets in effecting an angular adjustment.
- 21. The dispenser of claim 20 wherein the adjustment means comprises an adjustment screw coactable against a surface of the second bracket.
- 22. The dispenser of claim 19 wherein the hanging bracket is the one bracket.

No. 07/593,335 filed Oct. 1, 1990, now abandoned which, in turn, was a file wrapper continuation of Ser. No. 06/864,026 filed May 16, 1986, now abandoned. This now issued patent being entitled CENTER FEED ROLL while the grandparent and originally filed application having been entitled PACKAGING MATERIAL APPARATUS AND METHOD.
