Claims
- 1. An orthopedic interference screw for compression anchoring a bone graft in a bore formed in a bone mass, said screw comprising:
- a biocompatible body with a root having front and back ends and further including a root front section and a root back section separated by a juncture, each section having an outer surface, said root front section including a uniform taper over a majority of a longitudinal length thereof at a root taper angle to a longitudinal axis of said screw between said front end and a juncture between said root front section and said root back section, said root back section including a cylindrical form between said juncture and said back end;
- a screw thread formed over substantially all of said root, said screw thread including a crest with a uniform surface area along a length thereof and uniformly spirally expanding from said outer surface of said root from said front end to said juncture so that an aggregate of said crests between said front end and said juncture form a crest taper angle greater than said root taper angle, an aggregate of all of said crests on said screw thread oriented between said back end and said juncture on said back section being contained in a theoretical cylindrical surface concentric with said cylindrical form of said root back section.
- 2. The screw according to claim 1, wherein said screw thread includes buttress means on a side of said screw thread remote from said front end so that forces applied to said screw thread from said front end axially toward said back end will be buttressed by said buttress means.
- 3. The screw according to claim 1, wherein said screw thread includes buttress means on a side of said screw thread remote from said back end so that forces applied to said screw thread from said back end axially toward said front end will be buttressed by said buttress means.
- 4. The screw according to claim 1, wherein said screw is cannulated.
- 5. The screw according to claim 1, wherein said root taper angle is in the range of 5.5.degree. to 6.5.degree. and said crest taper angle is in the range of 8.degree. to 26.degree..
- 6. The screw according to claim 5, wherein said screw thread includes buttress means on a side of said screw thread remote from said front end so that forces applied to said screw thread from said front end axially toward said back end will be buttressed by said buttress means.
- 7. The screw according to claim 6, wherein said root taper angle is 6.degree. and said crest taper angle is 17.degree..
- 8. The screw according to claim 5, wherein said screw thread includes buttress means on a side of said screw thread remote from said back end so that forces applied to said screw thread from said back end axially toward said front end will be buttressed by said buttress means.
- 9. The screw according to claim 8, wherein said root taper angle is 6.degree. and said crest taper angle is 17.degree..
- 10. An orthopedic interference screw for compression anchoring a bone graft in a bore formed in a bone mass, said screw comprising:
- a biocompatible body with a root having front and back ends and further including a root front section and a root back section separated by a juncture, each section having an outer surface, said root front section including a uniform taper over a majority of a longitudinal length thereof at a root taper angle to a longitudinal axis of said screw between said front end and a juncture between said root front section and said root back section, said root back section including a cylindrical form between said juncture and said back end;
- a screw thread formed over substantially all of said root, said screw thread including a crest with a uniform surface area along a length thereof and uniformly spirally expanding from said outer surface of said root from said front end to said juncture so that an aggregate of said crests between said front end and said juncture form a crest taper angle greater than said root taper angle, an aggregate of all of said crests on said screw thread oriented between said back end and said juncture on said back section being contained in a theoretical cylindrical surface concentric with said cylindrical form of said root back section;
- wherein said screw thread includes buttress means on side of said screw thread remote from said front end so that forces applied to said screw thread from said front end axially toward said back end will be buttressed by said buttress means; and
- wherein said root taper angle is 6.degree. and said crest taper angle is 11.degree..
- 11. An orthopedic interference screw for compression anchoring a bone graft in a bore formed in a bone mass, said screw comprising:
- a biocompatible body with a root having front and back ends and further including a root front section and a root back section separated by a juncture, each section having an outer surface, said root front section including a uniform taper over a majority of a longitudinal length thereof at a root taper angle to a longitudinal axis of said screw between said front end and a juncture between said root front section and said root back section, said root back section including a cylindrical form between said juncture and said back end;
- a screw thread formed over substantially all of said root, said screw thread including a crest with a uniform surface area along a length thereof and uniformly spirally expanding from said outer surface of said root from said front end to said juncture so that an aggregate of said crests between said front end and said juncture form a crest taper angle greater than said root taper angle, an aggregate of all of said crests on said screw thread oriented between said back end and said juncture on said back section being contained in a theoretical cylindrical surface concentric with said cylindrical form of said root back section;
- wherein said screw thread includes buttress means on a side of said screw thread remote from said back end so that forces applied to said screw thread from said back end axially toward said front end will be buttressed by said buttress means; and
- wherein said root taper angle is 6.degree. and said crest taper angle is 11.4.degree..
- 12. An orthopedic interference screw for compression anchoring a bone graft in a bore formed in a bone mass, said screw comprising a biocompatible body having a root with front and back ends and further including a root front section, a root midsection and a root back section separated respectively by first and second junctures, each section having an outer surface, said root front section including a first uniform taper over a majority of a longitudinal length thereof at a first root taper angle to a longitudinal axis of said screw between said front end and said first juncture between said root front section and said root midsection, said root midsection including a second uniform taper over a majority of a longitudinal length thereof at a second root taper angle to the longitudinal axis of said screw between said first juncture and said second juncture oriented between said midsection and said back section, said root back section including a cylindrical form between said second juncture and said back end; and
- a screw thread formed over substantially all of said root, wherein said screw thread includes buttress means on only one side of said screw thread so that forces applied to said screw thread from a side remote from said buttress means will be buttressed by said buttress means and wherein said screw thread includes a first crest with a uniform surface area along a length thereof and uniformly spirally expanding from said outer surface of said root front section from said front end to said first juncture so that an aggregate of said first crests between said front end and said first juncture form a first crest taper angle greater than said first root taper angle, and a second crest with a uniform surface area along a length thereof and uniformly spirally expanding from said outer surface of said root midsection from said first juncture to said second juncture so that an aggregate of said second crests between said first and second junctures form a second crest taper angle greater than said second root taper angle and less than said first crest taper angle, an aggregate of all of said crests on said screw thread oriented between said back end and said second juncture on said back section being contained in a theoretical cylindrical surface concentric with said cylindrical form of said root back section.
