Claims
- 1. A method of modifying a well having a casing intersecting a subsurface formation, said method comprising the steps of:
- inserting a hydraulic jetting tool into said casing;
- forming a plurality of openings through said casing; and
- with said hydraulic jetting tool, directing a plurality of hydraulic jets therefrom, each of said hydraulic jets being directed through a corresponding one of said openings, and substantially simultaneously cutting a plurality of fan-shaped slots in said subsurface formation in a plane substantially transverse to a longitudinal axis of said casing.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of directing and cutting comprises cutting said plurality of fan-shaped slots such that each of said fan-shaped slots circumscribes a substantially larger arc about said axis than does the opening through which said slot is cut.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of directing and cutting comprises cutting said plurality of fan-shaped slots such that said plane is substantially perpendicular to said longitudinal axis of said casing.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of directing and cutting comprises directing said plurality of hydraulic jets and cutting said plurality of fan-shaped slots without rotation of the jetting tool.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of forming a plurality of openings comprises directing said plurality of hydraulic jets toward said casing for cutting said openings in said casing.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of directing and cutting comprises cutting said fan-shaped slots such that each of said fan-shaped slots describes an angle of at least approximately 100.degree..
- 7. The method of claim 1 further comprising:
- applying a high pressure fracturing fluid to said plurality of fan-shaped slots; and
- initiating a fracture in said subsurface formation and a plane defined by said plurality of fan-shaped slots.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of cutting said plurality of fan-shaped slots comprises creating a localized least principal stress direction in said subsurface formation substantially parallel to said longitudinal axis of said casing, thereby aiding subsequent fracture initiation in a plane generally perpendicular to said longitudinal axis.
- 9. The method of claim 1 further comprising maintaining a structural integrity of said casing.
- 10. A method of modifying a well comprising the steps of:
- inserting a hydraulic jetting tool into a well casing which is deviated greater than about 45.degree. from a vertical direction;
- forming a plurality of openings through said casing; and
- directing a plurality of hydraulic jets from said hydraulic jetting tool through corresponding openings through said casing and substantially simultaneously cutting a plurality of fan-shaped slots in said subsurface formation in a plane substantially transverse to said longitudinal axis.
