Claims
- 1. A safety joint apparatus adapted for connecting in a well tubing for enabling controlled separation of the well tubing at partial well tubing tensile loading capacity and which is provided with full well tubing tensile loading capacity during installation;
- a first tubular means having a flow passage formed therethrough and means for connecting with the well tubing below the safety joint;
- a second tubular means having a flow passage formed therethrough for communicating with the flow passage of said first tubular means and a means for connecting with the well tubing above the safety joint;
- shearable means for enabling separation of said first tubular means and said second tubular means at a tensile loading less than the tensile load capacity of the well tubing;
- means for releasably connecting said first tubular means and said second tubular means, said means for releasably connecting having a tensile load carrying capacity at least equal to the load carrying capacity of the well tubing;
- said means for releasably connecting is released by controlled relative longitudinal movement of said first tubular means to said second tubular means wherein said shearable means prevents separation of said first tubular means and said second tubular means under tensile loading after the controlled relative longitudinal movement therebetween; and
- lugs on one of said tubular means engageable with slots on the other of said tubular members for reconnecting said first tubular means and said second tubular means after shearing of said shearable means to enable retrieval of said first tubular means from the well.
- 2. A safety joint apparatus adapted for connecting in a well tubing for enabling controlled separation of the well tubing at partial well tubing tensile loading capacity and which is provided with full well tubing tensile loading capacity during installation;
- a first tubular means having a flow passage formed therethrough and means for connecting with the well tubing below the safety joint;
- a second tubular means having a flow passage formed therethrough for communicating with the flow passage of said first tubular means and a means for connecting with the well tubing above the safety joint;
- shearable means for enabling separation of said first tubular means and said second tubular means at a tensile loading less than the tensile load capacity of the well tubing;
- means for releasably connecting said first tubular means and said second tubular means, said means for releasably connecting having a tensile load carrying capacity at least equal to the load carrying capacity of the well tubing;
- said means for releasably connecting is released by controlled relative longitudinal movement of said first tubular means to said second tubular means wherein said shearable means prevents separation of said first tubular means and said second tubular means under tensile loading after the controlled relative longitudinal movement therebetween; and
- said means for releasably connecting including a latch dog means mounted on one of said tubular means, said latch dog means engaging the other of said tubular means for providing a tensile load carrying capacity substantially equal to that of the well tubing, said latch dog means released by controlled relative longitudinal movement of said first tubular means to said second tubular means.
- 3. A safety joint apparatus adapted for connecting in a well tubing for enabling controlled separation of the well tubing at partial well tubing tensile loading capacity and which is provided with full well tubing tensile loading capacity during installation;
- a first tubular means having a flow passage formed therethrough and means for connecting with the well tubing below the safety joint;
- a second tubular means having a flow passage formed therethrough for communicating with the flow passage of said first tubular means and a means for connecting with the well tubing above the safety joint;
- shearable means for enabling separation of said first tubular means and said second tubular means at a tensile loading less than the tensile load capacity of the well tubing;
- means for releasably connecting said first tubular means and said second tubular means, said means for releasably connecting having a tensile load carrying capacity at least equal to the load carrying capacity of the well tubing;
- said means for releasably connecting is released by controlled relative longitudinal movement of said first tubular means to said second tubular means wherein said shearable means prevents separation of said first tubular means and said second tubular means under tensile loading after the controlled relative longitudinal movement therebetween;
- an expansible chamber formed by said first tubular means and said second tubular means for effecting relative longitudinal movement therebetween in response to an increased fluid pressure therein; and
- means for controlling the introduction of fluid pressure in said expansible chamber for effecting the relative longitudinal movement.
- 4. A safety joint apparatus adapted for connecting in a well tubing for enabling controlled separation of the well tubing at partial well tubing tensile loading capacity and which is provided with full well tubing tensile loading capacity during installation;
- a first tubular means having a flow passage formed therethrough and means for connecting with the well tubing below the safety joint;
- a second tubular means having a flow passage formed therethrough for communicating with the flow passage of said first tubular means and a means for connecting with the well tubing above the safety joint;
- shearable means for enabling separation of said first tubular means and said second tubular means at a tensile loading less than the tensile load capacity of the well tubing;
- means for releasably connecting said first tubular means and said second tubular means, said means for releasably connecting having a tensile load carrying capacity at least equal to the load carrying capacity of the well tubing;
- said means for releasably connecting is released by controlled relative longitudinal movement of said first tubular means to said second tubular means wherein said shearable means prevents separation of said first tubular means and said second tubular means under tensile loading after the controlled relative longitudinal movement therebetween; and
- said means for controlling including means for connecting with a supply of fluid under pressure exteriorly of the well.
- 5. A safety joint apparatus adapted for connecting in a well tubing for enabling controlled separation of the well tubing at partial well tubing tensile loading capacity and which is provided with full well tubing tensile loading capacity during installation;
- a first tubular means having means for connecting with the well tubing below the safety joint;
- a second tubular means having means for connecting with the well tubing above the safety joint;
- shearable means for enabling separation of said first tubular means and said second tubular means at a tensile loading less than the tensile load capacity of the well tubing;
- means for releasably connecting said first tubular means and said second tubular means, said means for releasably connecting having a tensile load carrying capacity at least equal to the load carrying capacity of the well tubing;
- said means for releasably connecting including an expansible chamber for releasing said means for releasably connecting in response to an increased fluid pressure in said expansible chamber; and
- means for controlling the introduction of increased fluid pressure in said expansible chamber wherein said shearable means prevents introduction of increased fluid pressure in the expansible chamber.
- 6. The safety joint apparatus as set forth in claim 5, including:
- lugs on one of said tubular means engageable with slots on the other of said tubular members for reconnecting said first tubular means and said second tubular means after shearing of said shearable means to enable retrieval of said first tubular means from the well.
- 7. The safety joint as set forth in claim 5, wherein:
- said means for releasably connecting including a latch dog means mounted on one of said tubular means, said latch dog means engaging the other of said tubular means for providing a tensile load carrying capacity substantially equal to that of the well tubing, said latch dog means released by the controlled introduction of increased fluid pressure in said expansible chamber.
- 8. The safety joint as set forth in claim 5, wherein:
- said means for controlling including means for connecting with a supply of fluid under pressure exteriorly of the well.
- 9. A safety joint apparatus adapted for connecting in a well tubing for enabling controlled separation of the well tubing at partial well tubing tensile loading capacity and which is provided with full well tubing tensile loading capacity during installation;
- a first tubular means having a flow passage formed therethrough and means for connecting with the well tubing below the safety joint;
- a second tubular means having a flow passage formed therethrough for communicating with the flow passage of said first tubular means and a means for connecting with the well tubing above the safety joint;
- shearable means for enabling separation of said first tubular means and said second tubular means at a tensile loading less than the tensile load capacity of the well tubing;
- means for releasably connecting said first tubular means and said second tubular means, said means for releasably connecting having a tensile load carrying capacity at least equal to the load carrying capacity of the well tubing;
- said means for releasably connecting is released by controlled relative longitudinal movement of said first tubular means to said second tubular means wherein said shearable means prevents separation of said first tubular means and said second tubular means under tensile loading after the controlled relative longitudinal movement therebetween; and
- said means for controlling including means for connecting with a control fluid conduit of a subsurface safety valve.
- 10. A well tubing holddown apparatus adapted for connection in a well tubing to secure the well tubing at a subsurface location in a well, including:
- a tubular means having a flow passage formed therethrough and having means for connecting said tubular means in the well tubing to form a portion thereof;
- holddown slip means exteriorly mounted on said tubular means for movement to and from a radically expanded position for securing the well tubing in the well and a radially contracted position for enabling movement of the well tubing in the well;
- means for moving said holddown slip means to and from the radially expanded and radially contracted position;
- said means for moving including an expansible chamber formed by said tubular means for moving said holddown slips to the radially expanded position in response to increased fluid pressure in said expansible chamber;
- means for controlling the introduction of fluid pressure in said expansible chamber; and
- said means for controlling including means for connecting with a control fluid conduit disposed in the wall exteriorly of the well tubing.
- 11. A well tubing holddown apparatus adapted for connection in a well tubing to secure the well tubing at a subsurface location in a well, including:
- a tubular means having a flow passage formed therethrough and having means for connecting said tubular means in the well tubing to form a portion thereof;
- holddown slip means exteriorly mounted on said tubular means for movement to and from a radically expanded position for securing the well tubing in the well and a radially contracted position for enabling movement of the well tubing in the well;
- means for moving said holddown slip means to and from the radially expanded and radially contracted position;
- said means for moving including an expansible chamber formed by said tubular means for moving said holddown slips to the radially expanded position in response to increased fluid pressure in said expansible chamber;
- means for controlling the introduction of fluid pressure in said expansible chamber; and
- said means for moving including a housing member with a tapered surface, the increased fluid pressure in said expansible chamber moving said tapered surface relative to said holddown slips for moving the holddown slips radially outwardly.
- 12. A well tubing holddown apparatus adapted for connection in a well tubing to secure the well tubing at a subsurface location in a well, including:
- a tubular means having a flow passage formed therethrough and having means for connecting said tubular means in the well tubing to form a portion thereof;
- holddown slip means exteriorly mounted on said tubular means for movement to and from a radically expanded position for securing the well tubing in the well and a radially contracted position for enabling movement of the well tubing in the well;
- means for moving said holddown slip means to and from the radially expanded and radially contracted position;
- said means for moving including an expansible chamber formed by said tubular means for moving said holddown slips to the radially expanded position in response to increased fluid pressure in said expansible chamber;
- means for controlling the introduction of fluid pressure in said expansible chamber; and
- said means for moving including a releasing piston, said releasing piston responsive to fluid pressure in said flow passage for moving said holddown slip means to the radially contracted position for enabling movement of said well tubing.
- 13. The holddown apparatus as set forth in claim 12, wherein:
- said releasing piston normally maintained in an unsealed condition to prevent formation of a pressure differential thereacross, said releasing piston being sealed by relative movement of said tubular means for communicating fluid pressure in said flow passage to said releasing piston.
- 14. A well tubing safety joint and holddown apparatus adapted for connection in a well tubing at a subsurface location in a well to secure the well tubing at a subsurface location and provide a predetermined separation location for tensile loading on the well tubing, including:
- a tubular means for forming a flow housing defining a flow passage, said tubular means having a first tubular means for connecting said tubular means with well tubing in a well disposed below said tubular means;
- said tubular means having a second tubular means for connecting said tubular means with well tubing in the well disposed above said tubular means;
- shearable means for enabling separation of said first tubular means and said second tubular means at a tensile loading less than the tensile load capacity of the well tubing;
- holddown slip means exteriorly mounted on said tubular means for movement to and from a radially expanded position for securing the well tubing in the well and a radially contracted position for enabling movement of the well tubing in the well;
- means for moving said holddown slip means to and from the radially expanded and radially contracted position for enabling movement of the well tubing in the well;
- said means for moving including an expansible chamber formed by said tubular means for moving said holddown slips to the radially expanded position in response to increased fluid pressure in said expansible chamber;
- means for connecting said expansible chamber with a supply of fluid under pressure located exteriorly of the well;
- said means for connecting including a control fluid extending exteriorly of the well; and
- said control fluid conduit is also connected to a remote controlled subsurface safety valve.
- 15. A well tubing safety joint and holddown apparatus adapted for connection in a well tubing at a subsurface location in a well to secure the well tubing at a subsurface location and provide a predetermined separation location for tensile loading on the well tubing, including:
- a tubular means for forming a flow housing defining a flow passage, said tubular means having a first tubular means for connecting said tubular means with well tubing in a well disposed below said tubular means;
- said tubular means having a second tubular means for connecting said tubular means with well tubing in the well disposed above said tubular means;
- shearable means for enabling separation of said first tubular means and said second tubular means at a tensile loading less than the tensile load capacity of the well tubing;
- holddown slip means exteriorly mounted on said tubular means for movement to and from a radially expanded position for securing the well tubing in the well and a radially contracted position for enabling movement of the well tubing in the well;
- means for moving said holddown slip means to and from the radially expanded and radially contracted position for enabling movement of the well tubing in the well;
- said means for moving including an expansible chamber formed by said tubular means for moving said holddown slips to the radially expanded position in response to increased fluid pressure in said expansible chamber;
- means for connecting said expansible chamber with a supply of fluid under pressure located exteriorly of the well; and
- means for releasably connecting said first tubular means and said second tubular means, said means for releasably connecting having a tensile load carrying capacity at least equal to the load carrying capacity of the well tubing, said means for releasably connecting being released when said holddown slip means move to the radially expanded position.
- 16. A well tubing safety joint and holddown apparatus adapted for connection in a well tubing at a subsurface location in a well to secure the well tubing at a subsurface location and provide a predetermined separation location for tensile loading on the well tubing, including:
- a tubular means for forming a flow housing defining a flow passage, said tubular means having a first tubular means for connecting said tubular means with well tubing in a well disposed below said tubular means;
- said tubular means having a second tubular means for connecting said tubular means with well tubing in the well disposed above said tubular means;
- shearable means for enabling separation of said first tubular means and said second tubular means at a tensile loading less than the tensile load capacity of the well tubing;
- holddown slip means exteriorly mounted on said tubular means for movement to and from a radially expanded position for securing the well tubing in the well and a radially contracted position for enabling movement of the well tubing in the well;
- means for moving said holddown slip means to and from the radially expanded and radially contracted position for enabling movement of the well tubing in the well;
- said means for moving including an expansible chamber formed by said tubular means for moving said holddown slips to the radially expanded position in response to increased fluid pressure in said expansible chamber;
- means for connecting said expansible chamber with a supply of fluid under pressure located exteriorly of the well; and
- lugs on one of said tubular means engageable with slots on the other of said tubular members for reconnecting said first tubular means and said second tubular means after shearing of said shearable means to enable retrieval of said first tubular means from the well.
- 17. A well tubing safety joint and holddown apparatus adapted for connection in a well tubing at a subsurface location in a well to secure the well tubing at a subsurface location and provide a predetermined separation location for tensile loading on the well tubing, including:
- a tubular means for forming a flow housing defining a flow passage, said tubular means having a first tubular means for connecting said tubular means with well tubing in a well disposed below said tubular means;
- said tubular means having a second tubular means for connecting said tubular means with well tubing in the well disposed above said tubular means;
- shearable means for enabling separation of said first tubular means and said second tubular means at a tensile loading less than the tensile load capacity of the well tubing;
- holddown slip means exteriorly mounted on said tubular means for movement to and from a radially expanded position for securing the well tubing in the well and a radially contracted position for enabling movement of the well tubing in the well;
- means for moving said holddown slip means to and from the radially expanded and radially contracted position for enabling movement of the well tubing in the well;
- said means for moving including an expansible chamber formed by said tubular means for moving said holddown slips to the radially expanded position in response to increased fluid pressure in said expansible chamber;
- means for connecting said expansible chamber with a supply of fluid under pressure located exteriorly of the well; and
- said means for releasably connecting including a latch dog means mounted on one of said tubular means, said latch dog means engaging the other of said tubular means for providing a tensile load carrying capacity substantially equal to that of the well tubing, said latch dog means released by the controlled introduction of increased fluid pressure in said expansible chamber.
- 18. A well tubing safety joint and holddown apparatus adapted for connection in a well tubing at a subsurface location in a well to secure the well tubing at a subsurface location and provide a predetermined separation location for tensile loading on the well tubing, including:
- a tubular means for forming a flow housing defining a flow passage, said tubular means having a first tubular means for connecting said tubular means with well tubing in a well disposed below said tubular means;
- said tubular means having a second tubular means for connecting said tubular means with well tubing in the well disposed above said tubular means;
- shearable means for enabling separation of said first tubular means and said second tubular means at a tensile loading less than the tensile load capacity of the well tubing;
- holddown slip means exteriorly mounted on said tubular means for movement to and from a radially expanded position for securing the well tubing in the well and a radially contracted position for enabling movement of the well tubing in the well;
- means for moving said holddown slip means to and from the radially expanded and radially contracted position for enabling movement of the well tubing in the well;
- said means for moving including an expansible chamber formed by said tubular means for moving said holddown slips to the radially expanded position in response to increased fluid pressure in said expansible chamber;
- means for connecting said expansible chamber with a supply of fluid under pressure located exteriorly of the well; and said means for moving including a housing member with a tapered surface, the increased fluid pressure in said expansible chamber moving said tapered surface relative to said holddown slips for moving the holddown slips radially outwardly.
- 19. A well tubing safety joint and holddown apparatus adapted for connection in a well tubing at a subsurface location in a well to secure the well tubing at a subsurface location and provide a predetermined separation location for tensile loading on the well tubing, including:
- a tubular means for forming a flow housing defining a flow passage, said tubular means having a first tubular means for connecting said tubular means with well tubing in a well disposed below said tubular means;
- said tubular means having a second tubular means for connecting said tubular means with well tubing in the well disposed above said tubular means;
- shearable means for enabling separation of said first tubular means and said second tubular means at a tensile loading less than the tensile load capacity of the well tubing;
- holddown slip means exteriorly mounted on said tubular means for movement to and from a radially expanded position for securing the well tubing in the well and a radially contracted position for enabling movement of the well tubing in the well;
- means for moving said holddown slip means to and from the radially expanded and radially contracted position for enabling movement of the well tubing in the well;
- said means for moving including an expansible chamber formed by said tubular means for moving said holddown slips to the radially expanded position in response to increased fluid pressure in said expansible chamber;
- means for connecting said expansible chamber with a supply of fluid under pressure located exteriorly of the well; and
- said means for moving including a releasing piston,
- said releasing piston responsive to fluid pressure in said flow passage for moving said holddown slip means to the radially contracted position for enabling movement of said well tubing.
- 20. The apparatus as set forth in claim 19, wherein:
- said releasing piston normally maintained in an unsealed condition to prevent formation of a pressure differential thereacross, said releasing piston being sealed by relative movement of said tubular means for communicating fluid pressure in said flow passage to said releasing piston.
