Claims
- 1. A well screen comprising:
a perforated base pipe, a woven wire mesh surrounding, and in a spaced-apart relationship with, the base pipe, thereby forming an annular space between the base pipe and the wire mesh, and a wire having a thickness, the wire positioned within the annular space and extending around the base pipe, thereby creating consecutive revolutions of wire longitudinally spaced along a side of the base pipe, the consecutive revolutions of wire creating a corresponding gap between the consecutive revolutions of wire, the gap having a width greater than the thickness of the wire.
- 2. The well screen of claim 1, wherein the gap is less than one inch wide.
- 3. The well screen of claim 1, wherein the perforated base pipe includes an aperture, the aperture being wider than the gap.
- 4. The well screen of claim 1, wherein the gap is greater than {fraction (1/8)} of an inch wide.
- 5. The well screen of claim 4, further comprising a perforated jacket surrounding the wire mesh.
- 6. A well screen comprising:
a perforated base pipe, a filter medium surrounding, and in a spaced-apart relationship with, the base pipe, thereby forming an annular space between the base pipe and the filter medium, and a wire having a thickness, the wire positioned within the annular space and extending around the base pipe, thereby creating consecutive revolutions of wire longitudinally spaced along a side of the base pipe, the consecutive revolutions of wire creating a corresponding gap between the consecutive revolutions of wire, the gap having a width greater than the thickness of the wire.
- 7. The well screen of claim 6, wherein the gap is less than one inch wide.
- 8. The well screen of claim 6, wherein the base pipe includes an aperture, the aperture being wider than the gap.
- 9. The well screen of claim 6, wherein the gap is greater than {fraction (1/8)} of an inch 10 wide.
- 10. The well screen of claim 9, further comprising a perforated jacket surrounding the wire mesh.
- 11. A well screen comprising:
a perforated base pipe, a woven wire mesh substantially surrounding, and in a spaced-apart relationship with, the base pipe, thereby forming an annular space between the base pipe and the wire mesh, and a spacer positioned to lie within the annular space.
- 12. The well screen of claim 11, wherein the spacer comprises at least one rib positioned substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the perforated base pipe.
- 13. The well screen of claim 11, wherein the spacer comprises at least two spaced-apart ribs positioned substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the perforated base pipe and the perforated base pipe includes at least one aperture, the ribs being spaced apart by a distance which is less than the width of the at least one aperture.
- 14. The well screen of claim 13, wherein the distance is greater than {fraction (1/8)} of an inch.
- 15. The well screen of claim 13, wherein the distance is less than 1 inch.
- 16. The well screen of claim 11, wherein the spacer comprises at least one ring substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the perforated base pipe, the ring substantially surrounding the perforated base pipe.
- 17. The well screen of claim 16, further comprising a perforated jacket substantially surrounding the woven wire mesh.
- 18. The well screen of claim 11, wherein the spacer comprises at least two spaced-apart rings positioned substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the perforated base pipe and the perforated base pipe includes at least one aperture, the rings being spaced apart by a distance which is less than the width of the at least one aperture.
- 19. The well screen of claim 18, wherein the distance is greater than {fraction (1/8)} of an inch.
- 20. The well screen of claim 18, wherein the distance is less than 1 inch.
- 21. The well screen of claim 11, wherein the spacer comprises a wire extending around the base pipe, thereby creating consecutive revolutions of wire longitudinally spaced along a side of the base pipe, the consecutive revolutions of wire creating a corresponding gap between the consecutive revolutions of wire, the gap having a width greater than {fraction (1/16)} of an inch.
- 22. A well screen comprising:
a cylindrical, perforated, base pipe defining a pipe longitudinal axis and an exterior surface, a woven wire mesh filtering medium substantially surrounding, and in a spaced-apart relationship with, the exterior surface of the base pipe, the filtering medium defining a filtering medium longitudinal axis, which is substantially colinear with the pipe longitudinal axis, thereby forming an annular space between the exterior surface of the base pipe and the filtering medium, an elongated rib coupled to the exterior surface of the base pipe and positioned in the annular space, the elongated rib extending substantially parallel to the pipe longitudinal axis, and a wire having a thickness, the wire positioned within the annular space and spirally extending around the exterior surface of the base pipe and the elongated rib coupled to the exterior surface of the base pipe, thereby creating consecutive revolutions of wire longitudinally spaced along the elongated rib and the exterior surface of the base pipe, the consecutive revolutions of wire creating a corresponding gap between the consecutive revolutions of wire, the gap having a width greater than the thickness of the wire.
- 23. The well screen of claim 22, wherein the gap is less than one inch wide.
- 24. The well screen of claim 22, wherein the perforated base pipe includes an aperture, the aperture being wider than the gap.
- 25. The well screen of claim 22, wherein the gap is greater than {fraction (1/8)} of an inch wide.
- 26. The well screen of claim 25, further comprising a perforated jacket surrounding the filtering medium.
