- 2. The spoke retention plate as recited in claim 1 wherein said plate is generally cylindrical and frusto-conical in shape to define first and second axial surfaces extending radially outward from a center axis describing the plate, and said retention means comprise a first means disposed on one axial surface for retaining some inner ends of the spokes on a first layer and a second means disposed on the other axial surface for retaining the other inner ends of the spokes on a second layer.
- 3. The spoke retention plate as recited in claim 1 including rotation inhibiting means for inhibiting rotation of a lock nut used to secure the hub assembly to the vehicle wheel.
- 4. The spoke retention plate as recited in claim 3 wherein said plate includes an axial outer surface, an axial inner surface adapted to face the vehicle wheel and a central aperture extending between the surfaces and sized to pass a forward end portion of said lock nut, and said rotation inhibiting means comprise a spring beam extending axially between said inner surface and vehicle wheel and adapted to flex radially, said spring beam being configured to periodically engage a radial rib from said lock nut during rotation of said lock nut whereby to inhibit rotation of said lock nut.
- 5. A wheel trim assembly for attachment to a vehicle wheel, said assembly including an outer annular ring, an inner hub assembly of generally cylindrical configuration, a plurality of angularly spaced spoke members each including an outer radial end secured by said ring and an inner radial end secured by said hub assembly, and a center retention arrangement including a lock nut captivated for rotation in said hub assembly and adapted to engage a threaded spindle extending axially outward from said vehicle wheel, said assembly further characterized by an integral retention plate captivated by said hub assembly and including first means for captivating the inward radial end of at least one spoke member, second means for captivating the inward radial end of at least another spoke member, and anti-rotation inhibiting means for inhibiting rotation of said lock nut relative to said retention plate.
- 6. The wheel trim assembly as recited in claim 5 wherein said first means for captivating comprise a plurality of angularly spaced tab portions on the axial outer surface of said retention plate, each tab portion extending radially and spaced axially from the axially outer surface of the retention plate whereby to define an axial recess for captivating the inward radial end of the spoke member.
- 7. The wheel trim assembly as recited in claim 5 wherein said second means for captivating comprise a nest of plate members extending upwardly from the axially outer surface of the retention plate with two of said upstanding plate members defining a guide means for guiding the inward radial end of one said other spoke member downwardly to a resiliently deflectable third plate member provided with a slot for receiving the end, the third plate member slightly deflecting to allow a snap fit captivation into the slot.
- 8. The wheel trim assembly as recited in claim 5 wherein said first and said second captivating means are disposed on a respective diameter the center of which being at the center of the opening.
- 9. The wheel trim assembly as recited in claim 5 wherein said anti-rotation inhibiting means includes a plurality of angularly spaced axially extending spring beam members each extending axially inward from the axially inner surface of the plate member with a deflectable free end portion of each said spring beam being adjacent the opening for engaging the lock nut.
- 10. The wheel trim assembly as recited in claim 5 wherein said vehicle wheel defines an annular shoulder and further characterized by a retention clip extending from said outer annular ring assembly and including a sharp protrusion adapted to bite into the annular shoulder whereby to inhibit rotation of the wheel trim relative thereto.
- 11. A method of assembling a simulated wire wheel trim comprising a circular outer ring having a plurality of holes therethrough, a spoke retainer member, a plurality of spokes each having a radial outer end thereof disposed in one respective hole and a radial inner end connected to the retainer member, said method comprising the steps of:
- providing a plurality of angularly spaced retention recesses on said retainer member.
- positioning some of said spokes such that each has its radially inner end adjacent to a respective retention recess, and
- rotating said spoke retention member so that each said some spoke has its radially inner end disposed in the respective retention recess.
- 12. The method as recited in claim 11, further comprising the steps of
- providing a plurality of angularly spaced spoke retention cages on said retainer member,
- lowering and connecting an outer spoke retainer plate having a plurality of apertures onto the spoke retainer member such that the apertures captivate the radially inner ends of said some spokes, and
- captivatingly inserting the radial inner end of each said other spoke into a respective retention cage on said spoke retainer member.
- 13. The method as recited in claim 12 wherein said providing step comprises said spoke retention member being integrally formed of a polymeric material.
