Claims
- 1. Wind-driven apparatus including a head assembly for supporting a rotor shaft, rotor blade means, hub means for supporting said blade means on said rotor shaft, means for supporting said head assembly for weathervaning rotation about a substantially vertical axis, and damping means responsive to rotational movement of said head assembly about said axis for applying shearing forces to a high viscosity liquid to damp said rotational movement.
- 2. Apparatus in accordance with claim 1, wherein said damping means includes first and second disk means carried by said head assembly and said head assembly supporting means respectively, one of said disk means defining a reservoir for said high viscosity liquid and the other of said disk means being located within said reservoir, whereby relative rotation between said disk means produces a shearing action on liquid in said reservoir.
- 3. Apparatus in accordance with claim 2, wherein said reservoir includes liquid having a viscosity of about 60,000 centistokes.
- 4. Wind-driven apparatus comprising a wind rotor including a rotor shaft having elongate blades extending therefrom for rotation about the shaft axis, said blades having a plane of rotation perpendicular to said axis and being supported for rotation with a small coning angle relative to said plane, and means supporting said wind rotor for rotational movement about a substantially vertical axis in response to changes in horizontal wind direction and wherein said rotor shaft is tilted at a small downward angle relative to horizontal so that when each blade rotates to a downwardly extending position, it is more nearly perpendicular to the wind direction than when in an upwardly extending position.
- 5. Apparatus in accordance with claim 4, wherein said rotor is constructed so that said blades normally rotate down wind of said substantially vertical axis and wherein the tilt angle of said rotor shaft is less than about 5.degree..
- 6. Apparatus in accordance with claim 5, wherein said tilt angle is about 21/2.degree..
