Claims
- 1. A wind power generation apparatus, comprising:
a wind turbine having a rotor diameter and a hub height; and an artificial mound adjacent to the wind turbine, the artificial mound having a length, a width and a height.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the artificial mound has a generally hemispherical shape.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the artificial mound is generally teardrop shaped.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the artificial mound is made from soil.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the artificial mound is made from landfill material.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the artificial mound is made from the group consisting of refuse, clay, sand, earth, concrete, plastic, metal, wood, rocks, fiber, or a combination thereof.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the artificial mound is a hollow structure.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the artificial mound is an inflatable structure.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the height of the artificial mound is proportional to the rotor diameter and hub height.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the height of the artificial mound is between about 0.1 times to 2 times the rotor diameter.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the height of the artificial mound is between about 2 times to 3 times the rotor diameter.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising two or more artificial mounds.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising two or more wind turbines.
- 14. A wind power generation apparatus, comprising:
a wind turbine having a rotor diameter; and a mound adjacent to the wind turbine, the mound having a height from 0.1 times to 3 times the rotor diameter.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the mound has a height from about 0.5 times to 2 times the rotor diameter.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the mound has a height about equal to the rotor diameter.
- 17. A wind power generation apparatus, comprising:
an artificial mound having a length, a width and a height; and a wind turbine on or about the artificial mound, the wind turbine having a rotor diameter and a hub height.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein the artificial mound has a generally hemispherical shape.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein the artificial mound is generally teardrop shaped.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein the artificial mound is made from soil.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein the artificial mound is made from landfill material.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein the artificial mound is made from the group consisting of refuse, clay, sand, earth, concrete, plastic, metal, wood, rocks, fiber, or a combination thereof.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein the artificial mound is a hollow structure.
- 24. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein the artificial mound is an inflatable structure.
- 25. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein the height of the artificial mound is proportional to the rotor diameter and hub height.
- 26. The apparatus of claim 25 wherein the height of the artificial mound is between about 0.1 times to 2 times the rotor diameter.
- 27. The apparatus of claim 25 wherein the height of the artificial mound is between about 2 times to 3 times the rotor diameter.
- 28. The apparatus of claim 17 further comprising two or more artificial mounds.
- 29. The apparatus of claim 17 further comprising two or more wind turbines.
- 30. A method for increasing the performance of a wind turbine, comprising:
locating an artificial mound to direct wind to a rotor on the wind turbine; and building the artificial mound to a height that focuses the wind on the rotor of the wind turbine.
- 31. The method of claim 30 wherein the artificial mound has a generally hemispherical shape.
- 32. The method of claim 30 wherein the artificial mound is generally teardrop shaped.
- 33. The method of claim 30 wherein the artificial mound is made from soil.
- 34. The method of claim 30 wherein the artificial mound is made from landfill material.
- 35. The method of claim 30 wherein the artificial mound is made from the group consisting of refuse, sand, earth, concrete, plastic, metal, wood, rocks, fiber, or a combination thereof.
- 36. The method of claim 30 wherein the artificial mound is a hollow structure.
- 37. The method of claim 30 wherein the artificial mound is an inflatable structure.
- 38. The method of claim 30 wherein the height of the artificial mound is proportional to the rotor diameter and a hub height.
- 39. The method of claim 38 wherein the height of the artificial mound is between about 0.1 times to 2 times the rotor diameter.
- 40. The method of claim 38 wherein the height of the artificial mound is between about 2 times to 3 times the rotor diameter.
- 41. The method of claim 30 further comprising two or more artificial mounds.
- 42. The method of claim 30 further comprising two or more wind turbines.
- 43. A method for increasing the performance of a wind turbine having a rotor, comprising:
locating a mound having a height of between about 0.1 times and 3 times the rotor diameter of the wind turbine to direct wind to the rotor; and positioning the wind turbine to maximize the wind on the rotor of the wind turbine.
- 44. The method of claim 43 wherein two or more wind turbines are positioned.
- 45. A system for increasing the performance of a wind turbine, comprising:
a wind turbine; and a mound adjacent to the wind turbine to direct wind into a rotor of the wind turbine wherein the height of the artificial mound is between about 0.1 times to 2 times the rotor diameter.
- 46. The system of claim 45 wherein the mound has a generally hemispherical shape.
- 47. The system of claim 45 wherein the mound is generally teardrop shaped.
- 48. The system of claim 45 wherein the mound is made from the group consisting of refuse, sand, earth, concrete, plastic, metal, wood, rocks, fiber, or a combination thereof.
- 49. The system of claim 45 wherein the mound is a hollow structure.
- 50. The system of claim 45 wherein the mound is an inflatable structure.
- 51. The system of claim 45 further comprising two or more mounds.
- 52. The system of claim 45 further comprising two or more wind turbines.
- 53. The system of claim 45 wherein the mound is artificial.
- 54. A self-erecting wind-powered generator comprising:
a wind turbine; a platform attached to the wind turbine; and an inflatable mound configured to support the platform and the wind turbine above the ground.
- 55. The self-erecting wind-powered generator of claim 54 wherein the inflatable mound is a hemisphere.
- 56. The self-erecting wind-powered generator of claim 54 wherein one or more tower jacks are removably attached to the platform to raise the platform above the ground.
- 57. The self-erecting wind-powered generator of claim 54 wherein the inflatable mound is fabric.
- 58. The self-erecting wind-powered generator of claim 54 wherein a tower is attached to the platform, the tower extending from the platform to the ground.
- 59. The self-erecting wind-powered generator of claim 54 wherein a counterweight is attached to the platform.
- 60. The self-erecting wind-powered generator of claim 54 wherein air pressure within the inflatable mound supports the wind turbine.
- 61. A method for erecting a wind turbine comprising:
providing an inflatable mound; attaching the inflatable mound to a wind turbine; and inflating the inflatable mound to lift the wind turbine above the ground.
- 62. The method of claim 61 wherein two or more inflatable mounds are provided.
- 63. The method of claim 61 further comprising the step of attaching the wind turbine to a platform.
- 64. The method of claim 61 further comprising the step of erecting a tower between the wind turbine and the ground.
- 65. The method of claim 61 further comprising the step of attaching a counterweight to the wind turbine.
- 66. A system for erecting a wind turbine comprising:
a wind turbine; and an inflatable mound positioned to lift the wind turbine.
- 67. The system of claim 66 further comprising one or more tower jacks to lift the wind turbine.
- 68. The system of claim 66 further comprising a platform to distribute the weight of the wind turbine over an area of the inflatable mound.
- 69. The system of claim 68 further comprising a tower to support the platform and the wind turbine.
- 70. The system of claim 68 further comprising a counterweight attached to the platform.
