Claims
- 1. A cellular communication system comprising:
- a telephone network;
- a first base station controller connected to said telephone network;
- a first base station connected to said first base station controller;
- a second base station connected to said first base station controller;
- a second base station controller connected to said telephone network; and
- a third base station connected to said second base station controller;
- wherein a user station in communication with said first base station is capable of handing off either to a second base station by use of said first base station controller without the assistance of said telephone network or a mobile switching center, or to said third base station by use of said first base station controller and said second base station controller with the assistance of said telephone network; and
- wherein hand-off of communication from said first base station to said third base station is initiated when said third base station sends a local-language handoff request message to said second base station controller, said second base station controller forwarding said local-language handoff request message to said first base station controller over a direct link, said first base station controller translating said local-language handoff request message into a network compatible handoff request message and transmitting said network compatible handoff request message to said telephone network, and, upon receipt of a circuit switch acknowledgment message from said telephone network, transmitting a network compatible circuit-switch-complete message over said telephone network to said third base station.
- 2. The cellular communication system of claim 1 wherein said user station transmits and receives information using a spread spectrum communication format.
- 3. The cellular communication system of claim 1 wherein said first base station and said second base station use different frequencies.
- 4. The cellular communication system of claim 1 wherein communication between user stations and said first base station, said second base station or said third base station is carried out using time division multiplexing.
- 5. The cellular communication system of claim 4 wherein said base stations share a common time frame format, and wherein signals transmitted to and from adjacent ones of said base stations are distinguished by either different spreading codes or different frequencies or both different spreading codes and different frequencies.
- 6. The cellular communication system of claim 1 wherein said first base station hands off communication to said second base station by establishing a new communication link with said second base station while maintaining communication with said first base station and prior to said first base station controller signaling said second base station, and thereafter requests said first base station controller to transfer a call in progress from said first base station to said second base station.
- 7. The system of claim 1, wherein said direct link between said second base station controller and said first base station controller comprises an X.25 link.
- 8. The system of claim 1, wherein, in response to receiving said network compatible circuit-switch-complete message, said third base station transmits a polling message to said user station.
- 9. A system for localized handoff control in a communication system comprising:
- a telephone network;
- a plurality of base station controllers connected to said telephone network, said plurality of base station controllers comprising at least a first base station controller and a second base station controller;
- a plurality of base stations connected to said first base station controller, said plurality of base stations including a first base station and a second base station;
- a plurality of user stations each capable of communicating with said first base station and said second base station;
- a switch located at said telephone network; and
- a third base station connected to said second base station controller;
- wherein said first base station controller hands off communication from a first one of said user stations in communication with said first base station to said second base station by switching a call in progress from said first base station to said second base station without the assistance of said telephone network or mobile switching centers; and
- wherein said telephone network hands off communication from a second one of said user stations in communication with said first base station to said third base station by switching a second call in progress from said first base station controller to said second base station controller, said third base station sending a local-language handoff request message to said second base station controller, said second base station controller forwarding said local-language handoff request message to said first base station controller over a direct link, said first base station controller translating said local-language handoff request message into a network compatible handoff request message and transmitting said network compatible handoff request message to said telephone network, and, upon receipt of a circuit switch acknowledgment message from said telephone network, transmitting a network compatible circuit-switch-complete message over said telephone network to said third base station.
- 10. The system of claim 9 wherein said base stations and user stations transmit using a spread spectrum modulation format.
- 11. The system of claim 9 wherein said base station share a common time frame structure for time division multiplexed communication, and are assigned different frequencies and spread spectrum codes for communication with user stations.
- 12. The system of claim 9, wherein said direct link between said second base station controller and said first base station controller comprises an X.25 link.
- 13. The system of claim 9, wherein, in response to receiving said network compatible circuit-switch-complete message, said third base station transmits a polling message to said second one of said user stations.
- 14. A method of localized handoff in a communication system comprising at least a base station controller, a plurality of base stations and a plurality of user stations, said method comprising the steps of:
- establishing a communication link between a user station and a first base station;
- completing a call over said communication link;
- monitoring at said user station a received signal strength of signals from a second base station connected to a first base station controller, said first base station controller also connected to said first base station;
- determining a handoff condition in response to said received signal strength;
- establishing a communication link between said user station and said second base station;
- requesting said first base station controller to transfer said call from said first base station to said second base station;
- transferring said call from said first base station to said second base station;
- monitoring at said user station a second received signal strength of signals from a third base station, said third base station connected to a second base station controller different from said first base station controller;
- determining a second handoff condition in response to said second received signal strength;
- establishing a second communication link between said user station and said third base station;
- sending a local-language handoff request signal from said third base station to said second base station controller;
- receiving said local-language handoff request signal at said second base station controller;
- forwarding, over a direct link and without communicating via a mobile switching center or said telephone network said local-language handoff request signal from said second base station controller to said first base station controller;
- receiving said local-language handoff request signal at said first base station controller;
- translating, at said first base station controller, said local-language handoff request message into a network compatible handoff request message;
- transmitting said network compatible handoff request message from said first base station controller to said telephone network;
- receiving, at said first base station controller, a circuit switch acknowledgment message from said telephone network;
- transferring said call from said second base station to said third base station; and
- transmitting a network compatible circuit-switch-complete message over said telephone network to said third base station.
- 15. The method of claim 14 wherein said first communication link and said second communication link are established in different time slots of a time frame common to said first base station and said second base station.
- 16. The method of claim 14 wherein said user station communicates with said first base station and said second base station using spread spectrum communication.
- 17. The method of claim 14 wherein said first base station and said second base station are assigned distinguishable frequencies and different spread spectrum codes.
- 18. The method of claim 14, wherein said step of forwarding said local-language handoff request signal from said second base station controller to said first base station controller over said direct link comprises the step of transmitting said local-language handoff request signal over an X.25 link.
- 19. The method of claim 14, further comprising the step of, in response to receiving said network compatible circuit-switch-complete message at said third base station, transmitting a polling message from said third base station to said user station.
- 20. A method of handoff in a communication system comprising at least a base station controller, a plurality of base stations and a plurality of user stations, said method comprising the steps of:
- establishing a communication link between a user station and a first base station, said first base station connected to a first base station controller;
- completing a call over said communication link;
- handing off communication from said first base station to a second base station, said second base station connected to a second base station controller, said step of handing off further comprising the steps of:
- establishing a communication link between said user station and a second base station;
- sending a local-language handoff request signal from said second base station to said second base station controller;
- receiving said local-language handoff request signal at said second base station controller;
- forwarding, over a direct link and without communicating via a mobile switching center or said telephone network, said local-language handoff request signal from said second base station controller to said first base station controller;
- receiving said local-language handoff request signal at said first base station controller;
- translating, at said first base station controller, said local-language handoff request message into a network compatible handoff request message;
- transmitting said network compatible handoff request message from said first base station controller to said telephone network;
- receiving, at said first base station controller, a circuit switch acknowledgment message from said telephone network;
- transferring said call from said first base station to said second base station; and
- transmitting a network compatible circuit-switch-complete message over said telephone network to said second base station.
- 21. The method of claim 20, wherein said step of forwarding said local-language handoff request signal from said second base station controller to said first base station controller over said direct link comprises the step of transmitting said local-language handoff request signal over an X.25 link.
