Claims
- 1. A wood treatment composition, comprising:
a mixture of creosote and a thermoplastic polymer which is miscible with the creosote at about 200° F. and does not substantially phase-separate when the wood treatment composition is under ambient conditions, and the creosote is present in an amount of at least 50 percent by weight of the composition.
- 2. The composition of claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic polymer is selected from ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers, ethylene methyl acrylate copolymers, ethylene ethyl acrylate copolymers, ethylene butyl acrylate copolymers, ethylene acrylic acid copolymers, ethylene methyl methacrylate copolymers, ethylene methyl methacrylic acid copolymer, ethylene styrene interpolymers, styrene acrylic acid copolymers, styrene methacrylic acid copolymers; styrene methyl acrylate copolymers, styrene butadiene styrene block copolymers, styrene ethylene butylene styrene block copolymers, atactic polypropylene, or a blend thereof.
- 3. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the polymer has a melting point or a glass transition temperature below about 210° F.
- 4. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the polymer has a melt index higher than about 50 g/10 min.
- 5. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the polymer has a melt index higher than about 200 g/10 min.
- 6. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the polymer has a melt index higher than about 300 g/10 min.
- 7. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the polymer is an ionomer.
- 8. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the polymer is an ethylene acrylic acid copolymer with a melting pointing below about 210° F. and a melt index higher than about 200 g/10 min.
- 9. The wood treatment composition of claim 8, wherein the ethylene acrylic acid copolymer is added to the creosote as an aqueous dispersion.
- 10. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the creosote is a coal tar distillate.
- 11. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the creosote is beechwood creosote.
- 12. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the creosote is a creosote bush resin.
- 13. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the creosote is selected from high temperature creosote, low temperature creosote, or medium temperature creosote.
- 14. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the creosote is present in an amount of at least 70 percent by weight of the composition.
- 15. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the creosote is present in an amount of at least 80 percent by weight of the composition.
- 16. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the polymer is present in an amount from about 0.5 percent to about 15 percent by weight of the composition.
- 17. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the polymer is an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer.
- 18. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the polymer is an ethylene methyl acrylate copolymer.
- 19. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the polymer is an ethylene butyl acrylate copolymer.
- 20. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the polymer is an ethylene styrene interpolymer.
- 21. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the polymer is a styrene acrylic acid copolymer.
- 22. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the polymer is an ethylene methyl methacrylic acid copolymer.
- 23. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the polymer is a styrene-based copolymer.
- 24. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, further comprising at least one additive.
- 25. The wood treatment composition of claim 24, wherein the additive is an antioxidant, a UV inhibitor, an anti-microbial agent, an anti-fungal agent, a pesticide, or a mixture thereof.
- 26. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, wherein the polymer is substantially free of a solvent.
- 27. The wood treatment composition of claim 1, consisting essentially of:
a mixture of creosote and a copolymer selected from ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers, ethylene methyl acrylate copolymers, ethylene ethyl acrylate copolymers, ethylene butyl acrylate copolymers, ethylene acrylic acid copolymers, ethylene methyl methacrylate copolymers, ethylene methyl methacrylic acid copolymers, ethylene styrene interpolymers, styrene acrylic acid copolymers, styrene methacrylic acid copolymers, styrene methyl acrylate copolymers, styrene butadiene styrene block copolymers, styrene ethylene butylene styrene block copolymers, or a blend thereof, wherein the creosote is present in an amount of at least 50 percent by weight of the composition.
- 28. A wood product, comprising:
a piece of wood having at least one surface coated or penetrated by a treatment composition comprising a mixture of creosote and a polymer, wherein the polymer is miscible with creosote at about 200° F. and does not substantially phase-separate when the composition is under ambient conditions.
- 29. A method of treating wood, comprising:
contacting at least a portion of wood with a treatment composition comprising a mixture of creosote and a polymer at an elevated temperature and pressure for a sufficient period of time, wherein the polymer is miscible with creosote at about 200° F. and does not substantially phase-separate when the composition is under ambient conditions.
- 30. A composition comprising:
a mixture of a creosote having polycyclic aromatic compounds therein and a thermoplastic polymer, the polycyclic aromatic compounds having a crystallization temperature T1 in the creosote before the thermoplastic polymer is added and a crystallization temperature T2 in the mixture after the thermoplastic polymer is added, wherein T1 is greater than T2.
- 31. The composition of claim 30, consisting essentially of:
a mixture of creosote and a polymer selected from ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers, ethylene acrylic acid copolymers, ethylene styrene interpolymers, atactic polypropylene, or a blend thereof, the mixture having polycyclic aromatic compounds therein where the polycyclic aromatic compounds have a crystallization temperature in the creosote of T1 and a crystallization temperature in the mixture of T2, wherein T1 is greater than T2.
