Claims
- 1. A method of using an angioscope including an inflatable, transparent balloon on the distal end portion of the angioscope, means extending through the catheter and opening into the interior of the balloon for visualizing the region adjacent to the distal end of the catheter beyond the distal portion of the transparent balloon, and a passage means for extending a channel of the catheter through a distal portion of the balloon, the method including the steps of:
- (a) inserting a distal end of a flexible catheter of the angioscope into a vein, artery or other cavity, a proximal portion of the transparent balloon being sealed to a distal end of the flexible catheter, and a distal portion of the transparent balloon being sealed to a distal end portion of the passage means;
- (b) using a stiff tube connected between a distal portion of the channel and an opening in a working well recess in a distal portion of the balloon as the passage means;
- (c) abutting the outer surface of the distal portion of the balloon surrounding the working well recess against a wall of the intravascular structure, thereby preventing blood around the outer surface of the balloon from seeping between the wall of the intravascular structure and the distal portion of the balloon surrounding the working well recess and entering into the working well recess;
- (d) inflating the transparent balloon, illuminating the region near the distal end of the flexible catheter immediately beyond the distal end of the transparent balloon through the transparent balloon, and viewing the illuminated region through the catheter and through the transparent balloon;
- (e) moving a means for performing a predetermined procedure on tissue or substance in the illuminated region immediately beyond the distal end of the transparent balloon through the channel and the passage means to the tissue or substance; and
- (f) performing the predetermined procedure on the illuminated tissue or substance while visualizing the procedure through the catheter and the wall of the distal portion of the balloon.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein step (a) includes inflating the balloon with a fluid.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the fluid is a clear liquid.
- 4. The method of claim 1 including using a stiff tube connected between a distal portion of the first channel and an opening in the distal portion of the balloon to provide the passage means.
- 5. The method of claim 4 including providing a working well recess in the outer surface of the distal portion of the transparent balloon, a distal portion of the tube opening into the recess and providing a continuous passage between the distal end of the channel and the working well recess, the procedure performing means extending through the channel, the tube, and into the working well recess.
- 6. The method of claim 5 including forcing a clear liquid through the channel and the tube into the working well region, flushing blood out of the working well recess.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the clear liquid with which the working well recess is flushed is saline solution.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein the procedure performing means includes a laser fiber, the method including guiding a laser beam through the laser fiber to the visualized tissue or substance.
- 9. The method of claim 7 wherein the procedure performing means includes a biopsy forceps apparatus, the method including guiding the biopsy forceps to visualized tissue or substance to perform a procedure thereon.
- 10. The method of claim 7 wherein the procedure performing means includes means for conducting therapeutic substance to the visualized tissue or substance, the method including forcing the therapeutic substance through the substance conducting means to the visualized tissue or substance to treat it.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the therapeutic substance includes cold liquid, the method including freezing the visualized tissue or substance by means of the cold liquid.
- 12. The method of claim 7 wherein the procedure performing means includes a biopsy forceps apparatus, the method including visualizing grasping of a foreign object with the biopsy forceps.
- 13. The method of claim 1 including providing a plurality of electrodes on the outer surface of the working well balloon and flexible conductors along a surface of the working well balloon and through the catheter, the method including transmitting various electrical signals along the electrical conductors to their respective electrodes.
- 14. The method of claim 1 including providing a plurality of electrodes on the outer surface of the working well balloon and flexible conductors along a surface of the working well balloon and through the catheter, the method including transmitting signals received by the electrodes from the tissue in the intravascular structure or from blood in the intravascular structure through the flexible cables to a proximal end of the catheter.
