Claims
- 1. A workpiece clamping system which comprises:
- index means for locating a workpiece relative to a base plate;
- said index means comprising at least one index pin having a generally spherical head having at least two flats on said head, means for fastening said head to a base plate with said flats aligned substantially perpendicular to said base plate; and
- at least two clamp assemblies for engaging opposite sides of a workpiece;
- each clamp assembly including:
- a support block;
- a pivot pin mounted on and extending from said support block;
- means independent of said pivot pin for securing said support block to said base plate adjacent to a workpiece on said base plate:
- an arm mounted on said support block for pivoting movement about said pivot pin;
- said arm having a cam surface with a varying diameter around said pivot pin;
- means for pivoting said arm and cam surface;
- said cam surface having a plurality of angled grooves for engaging said workpiece and forcing said workpiece toward said base plate, pins and other clamps as said cam surface is pivoted into pressure engagement with said workpiece.
- 2. The workpiece clamping system according to claim 1 wherein said grooves are thread-like with sharp apexes.
- 3. The workpiece clamping system according to claim 1 wherein said support blocks including adjustable means for moving said clamp assembly toward and away from a workpiece on said base plate.
- 4. The workpiece clamping system according to claim 1 wherein said pivot pin is a shoulder screw extending through said arm and secured to support block.
- 5. The workpiece clamping system according to claim 1 wherein said means for pivoting said arm is a handle on said arm.
- 6. The workpiece clamping system according to claim 1 wherein said means for pivoting said arm comprises a gear segment for engagement with a power drive means.
- 7. The workpiece clamping system according to claim 1 wherein said flats comprise two opposed pairs of contiguous flats, whereby said index pin is generally diamond-shaped in plan view.
- 8. The workpiece clamping system according to claim 1 further including at least one clamping pin comprising an eccentric at least partially threaded head on mounting means for securing said clamping pin to a base plate and means for rotating said pin about said mounting means, whereby said clamping pin can be inserted into a hole in a workpiece on said baseplate and said clamping pin can be rotated to bring said threaded head into contact with said workpiece hole so that said threads force said workpiece toward said base plate.
- 9. The workpiece clamping system according to claim 8 wherein said mounting means comprises a threaded extension sized to thread into a threaded hole in said base plate and said means for rotating said pin comprises a tool engaging opening in said head opposite said threaded extension.
