Claims
- 1. A thermochromic writing instrument comprising, a body having an outer surface, a topical coating covering said outer surface, said topical coating including a first inner liquid crystal coating which is coated with an intermediate acrylic polymer coating and an outer protective barrier lacquer coating.
- 2. The writing instrument of claim 1 wherein the liquid crystal coating contains crystals ranging in size from about 5 to about 15 microns.
- 3. The writing instrument of claim 1 wherein the liquid crystal coating is formulated to begin color band refraction at a temperature ranging from about 15.degree. to about 30.degree. Celsius.
- 4. The writing instrument of claim 1 wherein the writing instrument will change colors within two seconds in response to changes in temperature.
- 5. The writing instrument of claim 1 wherein the topical coating can refract more than two color wavelengths in response to changes in temperature.
- 6. The writing instrument of claim 5 wherein the topical coating can refract from three to five color wavelengths when said writing instrument is subjected to different temperatures.
- 7. The writing instrument of claim 1 wherein the topical coating is formulated to change colors at intervals of about 3.degree. Celsius.
- 8. The writing instrument of claim 1 wherein the topical coating of the writing instrument has a reptilian texture.
- 9. The writing instrument of claim 1 wherein said outer protective barrier lacquer coating includes an inner colloidal lacquer coating layer and an outer emulsion lacquer coating layer.
- 10. The writing instrument of claim 9 wherein said outer emulsion lacquer coating layer is formed of an emulsion lacquer selected from the group consisting of a polyurethane resin, an acrylic resin and a nitrocellulose lacquer.
- 11. The writing instrument of claim 1 wherein said acrylic polymer coating includes at least one component of styrene and formaldehyde.
- 12. A thermochromic writing instrument comprising, a body having an outer surface, a liquid crystal coating covering said outer surface, a protective barrier lacquer coating provided over the liquid crystal coating to thereby form a hardened surface for protecting the liquid crystal coating.
- 13. The writing instrument of claim 12 wherein the liquid crystal coating contains crystals ranging in size from about 5 to about 15 microns.
