Claims
- 1. A catalyst composition capable of selectively catalyzing alkylation, disproportionation or transalkylation reactions to selectively produce the 1,4-dialkylbenzene isomer in excess of its normal equilibrium concentration, said catalyst composition comprising:
- (i) a crystalline zeolite material characterized by a constraint index of within the approximate range of 1 to 12 and a silica to alumina mole ratio of at least 12;
- (ii) at least 0.25 weight percent of a modifier capable enhancing the ability of said crystalline zeolite material (i) to selectively catalyze the production of said 1,4-dialkylbenzene isomer in said alkylation, disproportionation or transalkylation reactions, said modifier being selected from one or more Group VI A metals incorporated into the crystal structure of the zeolite in the form of the oxide of such metals; and
- (iii) at least 0.25 weight percent phosphorus incorporated into the crystal structure of the zeolite in the form of phosphorus oxide.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein said Group VI A metal is chromium.
- 3. The composition of claim 2 wherein said chromium comprises between 1 and 20 weight percent of said composition.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 wherein said Group VI A metal is molybdenum.
- 5. The composition of claim 4 wherein said molybdenum comprises between 1 and 30 weight percent of said composition.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein said Group VI A metal is tungsten.
- 7. The composition of claim 6 wherein said tungsten comprises between 1 and 30 weight percent of said zeolite.
- 8. The composition of claim 1 wherein said zeolite is chosen from the group consisting of ZSM-5, ZSM-11, ZSM-12, ZSM-23, ZSM-35, ZSM-38 and ZSM-48.
- 9. The composition of claim 8 wherein said zeolite is ZSM-5.
- 10. The composition of claim 8 wherein said zeolite is ZSM-12.
- 11. The composition of claim 8 wherein said zeolite is admixed with a binder therefor.
- 12. The composition of claim 8 which has been calcined prior to use to convert said metal to an oxide thereof.
- 13. The composition of claim 1 wherein the oxides of said metals are incorporated into the crystal structure of the zeolite by contacting said zeolite with a solution of one or more compounds of the elements of said Group VI A and calcining said contacted zeolite.
