Claims
- 1. A zinc-free lubricating composition for lubricating a continuously variable transmission, the lubricating composition comprising a mixture of:(1) a major amount of a lubricating oil; and (2) an effective amount of a performance enhancing additive combination comprising: (a) an ashless polyisobutenyl succinimide dispersant, the polyisobutenyl having an Mn of 700-1200; (b) at least one organic phosphite having the following structure: where R is hydrocarbyl and R1 is hydrocarbyl or hydrogen and R or R1 contains a thioether group; (c) a calcium overbased phenate detergent at a concentration such that the total amount of calcium in the fluid is less than about 500 ppm; (d) friction modifiers comprising: (1) one or more succinimides having the structure wherein R7 is C6 to C30 alkyl, and z=1 to 10, and (2) one or more ethoxylated amines; and (e) a primary amide of a long chain carboxylic acid.
- 2. The lubricating composition of claim 1 wherein said primary amide is represented by the general structure:RCONH2 wherein R is an alkenyl group having about 12 to 24 carbons and is present in an amount of from about 0.001 to 1.0 wt. %.
- 3. The lubricating composition of claim 2 wherein said primary amide is oleamide present in an amount from 0.001 to 0.5 wt. %.
- 4. The lubricating composition of claim 1 wherein said ethoxylated amine has the structure wherein R8 is a C6 to C28 alkyl group, X is O, S or CH2, and x=1 to 6.
- 5. The lubricating composition according to claim 4, wherein said friction modifier is said ethoxylated amine where X is oxygen, R8 contains a total of 18 carbon atoms, and x=3.
- 6. The lubricating composition of claim 5, wherein said ethoxylated amine is N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)hexadecyloxypropylamine.
- 7. The lubricating composition of claim 1, wherein said organic phosphite has R groups selected from the group consisting of: 3-thiapentyl, 3-thiaheptyl, 3-thiaundecyl, and 3-thiapentadecyl.
- 8. The lubricating composition of claim 1, wherein said lubricating oil contains a synthetic base oil.
- 9. The lubricating composition of claim 1, wherein said calcium detergent is calcium sulfurized phenate.
- 10. A continuously variable transmission apparatus containing the composition of claim 1.
